To not use the tweeters or hatch speakers?

Looking for smarter and more experience people on this topic to weigh in.

I want to replace the 4runner's stereo and figured the easiest thing would be to get a 4 channel amp and then replace the 4 door speakers with wide range speakers, add a sub on the back probably with the JL Audio enclosure.

But my question is, would running tweeters be worth it? and the hatch speakers? doesn't seem like those get used.

And then I have not seen a lot of reviews on the Phoenix HU. Seems like the android HU's can be hit or miss. I've seen some negative reviews out there but wondering if anyone had experience here.

Or what HU? I'm kind of at a loss at this point. The cool looking larger ones seem to block air vents.

I'm not an expert, but I believe the dash speakers and door speakers function as a 2-way setup from the factory.

I replaced both with a JL component system, using the frame from the OEM dash speakers as brackets for the tweeters. I'm much happier with the sound quality over stock.

I've heard of people eliminating the hatch speakers, but haven't done so myself. IIRC, they might be wired in series with the rear door speakers, which might require some kind of bypass installed in their place.

There are a few audio nuts on this forum who can probably elaborate on this a lot better than me. :D

I guess then for me it's really a HU that retains steering wheel controls and can do both car play and android auto, ideally wirelessly but as I understand it, that's just adding a USB dongle.

You think retaining the tweeters is necessary?

Having the highs hitting your knees if far from optimal. It is minimal effort to wire and install the tweeters....and if you are putting all that effort in to a new HU, speakers, amp, sub.....why skimp on the front sound stage?

Is it skimping though? Have you been in cars with high end full range speakers and component to compare?

Biggest thing I can tell is it raises the sound stage. Which is enough justification in itself. But. Anything else?

Edit: and what about the rear? Tweeters are in the front but if you're in the back seat, how does that sound?

Could I just replace the HU, speakers plug and play?

Like if i replace rhe tweeters, I don't need to worry about cross overs or anything if I'm using all stock wiring and not running an amp?

just throwing this out there...I replaced the tweeters this week with the Infinity Reference tweeters from crutchfield., there's an article here:
4Runner Front Tweeter Speaker Mod | Toyota 4Runner Forum [4Runners.com]
the Infinity's come with a capacitor that you solder inline to keep them from getting the lows. Mines not yet a true 'Hi-end" system, but it's an incredible difference. I listen to a lot of metal and electronic music and the bass sounds better even through the remaining stock speakers and the highs are really crisp and clean. and it was only about $80

I'm thinking someone probably makes wiring adapters for everything. I like Crutchfield.com because they usually include anything you need for the installation.

If you do the head unit as well, I'll be curious to see what you go with. I've been wanting to replace mine, but the ones I end up looking at tend to be pricey, and it's hard to spend a lot on the stereo when there are still other mods and accessories I want.

Maestro and a compatible HU can be integrated for roughly $250 plus HU.

lots of features added at the HU as well
