I have a 2019, and not mods other than spacers, lol. I took it to the beach area here in Pensacola, and took it in the medians sandy section for a bit. Drove fine, no need for 4L. I stopped hard a couple times, to see if it woudl get stuck in the soft white sand. Nope, worked like a champ. Probably not a real true test, but the 4runner did well.
But, If I were to need off road tires, for minor roads, maybe some creeks, like mud, what tires would work well on the Limited sized wheels.

Provided your rims are wider than 7”. I believe 7.5” is the minimum for that size tire. I’m aware folks do it but for safety sake I personally wouldn’t and you will find many tire shops wouldn’t install them either. Not worth the potential liability.

Correct. The wide wheels will be even more important if you're going to air the tires down for the sand.

I've been there (275/55/R20). Not worth the money imo. I went to 17in wheels and tires. I have 285/70R17 on 17in TRD ORP wheels. For width I'm with in spec and 285/70R17 tires have a bigger contact patch giving pressure distributed in a larger area heling to float. Haven't tested in sand but works well on deep snow for me.

Running Open Country 245/60/20. Love this tire. Highly recommended. When I switch to 17", I will probably use Toyo again.

I saw a Limited a couple years ago with some Good Years, 255/55/20s. I noticed the ratio being 55 and thought it may have been to keep rubbing down as it was a Duratrac I believe. Little more aggressive. Looked Good.
My spacers do cause a bit of rubbing, of which I heated the fender liner in.. need a little more.

I did the same as you with the ORP 17” ers. They are 7.5” wide as well. I didn’t feel comfortable putting that tire on a 7” Limited rim. 86A74A25-12D1-4628-8A9A-8A313AD79963.jpg

That pic reminds I'm helping another friend, looks very similar to yours. Like new but used wheels and tires installed.
Next would be spacer lift (to keep XREAS for now) and 285/70R17 tires.
