First Oil Change

I know this sounds dumb, but I’m getting different answers. I’m at 5,000 miles on my 2022 TRD Pro, message comes up and says it is time to change oil. Guy at dealer says no not till 10,000??

This is an excellent video from a great source. Oil changes every 5,000 miles, absolutely.

 

Toyota says oil change every 10k and tire rotation and “inspection” every 5k.

There will be several on here that say you only need to change the oil every 10k. Personally I do mine every 5k. It cost me $80 extra per year. That is 21.9 cents per day. The way I look at it is if I can’t afford an extra $80 a year maybe I should not have a 4Runner.

I think if you were to ask a mechanic what they do to their personal vehicle they would say every 5k.

Toyota doesn’t want to spend money on you so they will only do it every 10K. It’s ok because their service sucks anyway.

 

Do the 5k oil change and everyone there after yourself. Get the fumoto drain valve, new aluminum oil filter housing cap and then sell/replace your pro skid plate for the CTH skid plate (if you plan to keep it the stock TRD Pro look) as it has the oil filter opening and it will cut your oil change procedure in half. Never having to remove the skids to do another oil change and risk damaging/cross threading bolts. Toyota should have incorporated this into the 4runner skids. The Tundra and Tacoma has it, why leave the 4runner out? SMH

I have just under 10k on mine, have 2 free oil change but will not be taking it to Toyota.

 

I payed my own money for my first oil change at around 1000 miles (can't remember the exact miles I did it.)

Then I pay my own money for 5000miles / 6 month oil change.

12month / 10K miles oil change was covered by Toyota maintenance plan.

Same story for 15K miles, payed out of pocket.

Pretty much oil change 0W20 as stated in the manual every 5000miles or 6months which ever comes first.

 

I paid for my first oil change at ~2K miles at the dealer after about five months of ownership. This was part of the first service that included tire rotation. The price was just over $100 which is inexpensive as compared to the price of my 2022 TRD Pro.

 

My first oil change will be at 1,000 and then every six months or 5,000 miles thereafter and I will do all the oil changes myself. I may even do the tire rotations.

 

On my 2022, I personally changed all fluids out at 3k to synthetic: oil change, front and rear diffs.

Oil changes will be every 10k and will stay on that interval thereafter.

I’ll change the front, center and rear diff out at 50k and stay on that interval thereafter.

I’ve done the same intervals when I bought my 2011 SR5 new and it has 160k on it and runs just a good as the day i bought it.

Save money and do it yourself, plus you learn a lot wrenching on your own vehicle.

 

I haven’t found or heard of an oil filter housing cap (new-to-me 4R picked up a couple weeks ago). Have a link for me?

Looking at fumoto valves, any reason not to go with the

F103SX valve vs the F133? Any clearance issues with the TRD skid? Wasn’t planning to change that but will see how the first oil change goes…anything else I should do while I’m under there? (Last oil change acto CarFax was around 31k several months ago, so planning on doing around 35k.)

 

The cap is not necessarily needed but least I know it won’t break on me if removing.

As for the Fumoto valve, I know for sure I didn’t get the 103sx, I forgot which one I got but it does clear the skids. Not sure if I got the 133 or 133s. I think either 133 or 133s should work if I remember correctly.

I've never met a person who has regretted changing their oil too soon. I have however met people who have regretted not doing it sooner!

 

I usually go 7500 or 10k. Do whatever you want

 

I sent to Blackstone lab oil at first change at 1500 miles, viscosity was 5.6. Cannot imagine how low it would be after 10,000 miles. What only saves engine from excessive wear, that Toyota OEM oil has more than 700 units of Moly.

 

I've done quite a few Blackstone reviews of my Tacoma which I extend to over 10k often. They have all come back good

 

This topic really should be a sticky. I changed my oil at 1,100 kms (680 miles), and I’m aiming to change my oil myself in the next couple of weeks (5,600 kms right now). When you can do it yourself it’s a relatively cheap insurance. As someone that has worked for 2 dealerships I would look at it like this: if you plan to keep it longer than warranty period and much longer, do it sooner; if you don’t plan to keep it behind 80K miles or 5 yrs, do it cheaper … if there are any issues, it becomes the problem of the next owner. I plan to keep mine for a 10+ yrs, my last new car, so I’ll do minor services more often myself. Between financing and my trade it, this new vehicle cost me $60K, and I’ve stupidly spent another $10K customization, so what’s $60 for an extra oil and a filter in between 10K services. Maybe a tiny bit of recovery on fuel, but a lot of peace of mind.

Also worth noting, the 10K recommendations are based on ideal circumstances. Towing, lots of sitting in traffic/idling, short drives, offroading, high temps, cold starts are all not considered ideal also it’s less than 10K.

 

You do 10K mile oil changes because your Tacoma & 4Runner do not fall under any of these cases that require 5K oil changes per the manual?
(No this is not for troll or joke. Genuinely asking why the manual is not followed for me to learn)

• Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads.
• Driving while towing, using a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading.
• Repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below 32°F / 0°C.
• Extensive idling and/or low speed driving for a long distance such as police, taxi or
• door-to-door delivery use.

No I just don't sweat the intervals like others. I run full synthetic and every Blackstone analysis I've done has been just fine. I think I typically do 12,500 miles between changes. My 2010 Tacoma has 221k miles so far. Running Full synthetic you can go 10k easy.

I also run whatever full synthetic is the cheapest. Supertech Walmart is one I have used the most.

 

Kicking problems, ones purposly created, down the road, later, to another owner, just wrong.

agreed, I do 10k intervals on full synthetic Mobil 1 and no issues. i also Have a 2011 SR5 with 160k on the clock and do the same 10k interval.

 

I like 7,500 mile intervals with Mobile 1 Advanced Fuel Economy Full Synthetic 0W-20 (dependent on driving conditions though). IMHO, no need to waste money, oil and time if not needed. But if it makes you feel good about shorter oil change intervals and have the extra funds and time I say by all means do it, it can't hurt for sure.
Im a firm believer in "don't try and fix what's not broken".

I think i remember my dad would sometime replace the oil and not the filter at intervals of 2-3,000 miles and the next time replace the filter with the oil change. That was in the days of conventional motor oil.

 

Change it at 5K. Have dealer do it at 10K, you at 15K, them at 20K, 25K, etc. etc.

 

Doesn't sound dumb at all. Many people ask that question. Toyota is a 85 year old company. They have made and sold around 200 million vehicles. I would trust them, and look to your owners manual.

 

You trust their 'lifetime' transmission fluid?

 

Sure. Owned a 200 series Land Cruiser with a sealed transmission and wasn't ever planning on changing it.
