I haven't found anything about this issue.

When the speedometer stopped working, prior to passing 200K, it always stays at 40 mph when not driving. When I begin driving the needle moves up way past the speed I am at and eventually pegs itself although I am driving far slower.

The engine light is not on, the odometer and cruise control both work. I went by a parts store and asked them to do a scan but without an engine light being on they would not scan it.

    Any thoughts?

To throw this in, yesterday I replaced the speed sensor on the transmission and when I disconnected the plug and removed the sensor, the speedometer needle stayed on 40 mph. Installing the new one and plugging it in did not change anything either. I'm still researching.

Sounds like a bad cluster. I'm gonna guess that 4th gen is a combo of analog Guages and a circuit board. Guessing that since you said unplugging it still has no difference. It's not going to be an ECU issue, so no check engine light will pop. (Ironic, the thing to tell you other things are bad in the truck won't tell you when itself is bad. Lol)

Easiest way.....find another one in a junk yard or ebay.

Otherwise you're tracking down a blown capacitor, chip, resistor, etc.

All I get is this little box?!
Could a bad wheel speed sensor cause this? I think that would pop a code though yeah?

that issue SHOULD pop a CEL. BUT, in this particular situation who knows if it did or not.

And with the truck off and cluster unplugged, it had no change. Nothing went back to 0.

Just read this reply ^. The speedometer cluster was not unplugged, just the plug that went on the sensor going into the transmission. That is going to be the next thing I do, when I can dive into the dash. I'm thinking of options for that.

10-4 but either way, when you unplugged the sensor SOMETHING shoulda happened. some sort of reaction from above.

If you have alerts set up on something (CEL in this case), you expect to get that alert whether it's unplugged from the attachment on either end. Otherwise, move up to the next step where that alert would come from (instrument cluster). And that is the common denominator between the sensor and the needle not going to 0.

Did you ever get this resolved? I’m running into the same issue. Thanks!

Forgot about posting this. I haven't found an answer for this and it's still the same.

I like delving into unusual issues, so here’s what I’ve done with this one. First, I sent the symptoms to a guy who replaces gauge cluster LEDs to change the color. He’s been in more gauge clusters than anybody else I know and has a lot of knowledge and insight about how they work. So we’ll see if he has any thoughts. I also posed the question to ChatGPT, with this result FWIW:
    ==
That’s a pretty specific and unusual issue—but based on what you described (speedometer stuck at 40 mph when parked, overreading and pegging when driving, no check engine light, odometer and cruise control still functional), here are some targeted possibilities:

    Most Likely Causes
    1. Faulty Speedometer Gauge Motor (Stepper Motor)
    • The gauge needle behavior—stuck at 40, then pegging—suggests a mechanical issue within the cluster itself.
    • These motors can fail or miscalibrate, especially with age and mileage.
    • Common fix: replace or recalibrate the stepper motor inside the instrument cluster. Some shops specialize in gauge cluster repair.
    2. Instrument Cluster Circuit Board Fault
    • Less common, but circuit board traces or solder joints can crack with age or vibration, causing just the speedometer to malfunction while other gauges (fuel, temp, tach) are fine.
    • This could explain why odometer and cruise still work—they rely on the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), but not the physical gauge needle.
Why It’s Not Likely a Sensor Issue
    • Cruise control and odometer both rely on the VSS or related input from the ABS module (in later models).
    • If the VSS or ABS sensor were bad, the cruise and odometer would also likely malfunction.
    • Since they’re working, the data from the vehicle is correct—it’s just not being displayed properly on the speedometer needle.
    Next Steps
    • Self-diagnosis trick: When you turn the key to ON (engine off), some clusters do a brief needle sweep. Does your speedometer needle move smoothly? Any jerky motion or no movement at all?
    • Check fuses: Just to rule it out, check the GAUGE and ECM fuses.
    • Try a cluster reset: Disconnect the battery for 10+ minutes, reconnect. Sometimes this resets glitchy needle calibration (low odds but easy to try).
    • Consider removing and sending the cluster for repair: There are reputable services (e.g., Circuit Board Medics or similar) that rebuild these for ~$150–200.

The guy from T4Rewired LLC who does LED upgrades to gauges and switches says stepper motor.
