Is the 4Runner TRD Pro Worth It?

I am 99 percent certain I am switching to the 2017/18 4Runner from the 2016 Tacoma TRD Off-Road and love the stats/looks of the 4Runner TRD Pro. However, I am not strong in the technical knowledge of shocks, drivetrains, etc. To that end, is the Pro worth the price and worth the wait? My Toyota dealership ship is saying I will probably have to wait until the 2018s are ready, which likely wouldn't be until the end of 2017.

All depends on what you plan to do with it in the future...Pros come with 2" lift, but ive seen several pro owners who ripped that out and replaced with 3" lift kits. Leather seats, and TRD pro badging, and some limited colors just for pro (cement, quicksand etc) if those are important to you. TRD pro wheels, no moonroof option with the pro. Other than that it is really close to the trail model...

 

Pros come with a 1" front lift only.

 

OP: if you are planning on modifying the truck then the PRO isn't the best investment, as you will be replacing some of the stuff you paid a premium for. A TRD OR / premium might be a better choice. If you don't plan on doing any mods and will use / appreciate the extras that make the PRO what it is, then it may be the better choice. Only you can decide.

 

I got the TRD OR Premium with KDSS and upgraded the suspension for about 2" of lift with a kit that is 1,500 less than the extra cost of the Pro. This is comparing MSRP on each. I got the OR for 2,200 less than MSRP, and I haven't seen any place that will let you have a Pro for that much off of MSRP. In fact most sites I have looked at want more than MSRP for the Pro.

I have everything the Pro has as far as Off road capability goes plus a moon roof and some other trinkets that the Pro doesn't have. Most of the Pro's upgrades, with the exception of the Bilstein shocks and colors is just appearance stuff. Badging, etc.

If you are going to change tires, the fact that the Off Road has 7.5" rims and the Pro has 7" might be a consideration.

This all being said, I would recommend the OR Premium. You can get one about anywhere and if you negotiate well, it will be 2,000 or more less than MSRP.

I bought a trail, which the current trd off road, and coverted mine to a pro cheaper. I added the wheels, and put pro shocks on. Then put my own lift and better tires than a pro.

 

For me, yes. It has everything I wanted and it's all covered under warranty. I don't want to mod suspension, etc. so it perfect for what I want it for. Didn't care about sunroof or other bells and whistles, what it has as standard equipment is more than I will use anyways. If you like to leave stuff stock, then go pro!

 

+1... Also resale value on the Pro is really strong. Buying another model then throwing on parts will not gain much if and when it's time to unload it. Not a huge deal, but just another thing to consider.

 

If I found a Cement TRD Pro near me, I would trade my 2016 Trail Premium on it. The TRD components and color are the drivers for me.

 

Not sure this would hold true. I was in Denver over the weekend and some of the dealers had dealer modified Off Roads that they were calling Pro's and selling for a price comparable to a Pro. I'm guessing these will hold their value near as well as a Pro will.

Stevinson Toyota had two of them. Price of the package was 7,300. Only thing I could see the package consisting of was a Blistein/ToyTec lift (the same as you can buy for 1,030 from ToyTec), a bunch of badging and Pro wheels for a price tag of 7,300. The Pro wheels were fitted with 285's which I understand are 7" and probably not recommended for that size tire.

To me the Pro just seems to be a set of shocks, a bunch of badges and a couple of different colors, but there could be something I'm missing.

I love my MG TRD Pro. Added the gobi stealth roof rack on it. Planning on adding the Toytec TRD Pro 2" lift (Just the addon to the TRD Pro suspension) and planning on adding 285s tires once the 265s are worn out. TRD Pro'ed!

 

I got quotes from dealers for a TRD Pro and Offroad Premium. I bought the Offroad Premium for $7,000 less than the Pro. The dealers want full MSRP for the Pros but will take a few thousand off the price of the Offroad Premium. The two vehicles are basically the same except for the bolt on Pro parts which all can be bought from Toyota for much less than $7,000. I'll use some of the money saved to get a set of winter wheels & tires, ski rack and maybe the pro grill. The offroad suspension and skid plates are fine for the driving we do. It doesn't make much sense to get the Pro unless you absolutely need the Pro only paint color.

 

I trade my cars in every 2 - 3 years, use them as company cars to get the tax write off. Just traded in my 15 TRD Pro on a 17 TRD Pro. The dealer gave me $37k for my 2015 with 42k miles and bald tires, on a trade in for my 17 pro. I only paid $41k for it back in Dec. of 2014. That's the stongest trade in value I've ever recieved on a car. Loving the TRD Pro edition. as long as Toyota keeps selling them, I'll keep buying them.

 

The only Toyota dealer in my area with a 2017 Pro in stock added $5,000 to the MSRP and called it a "market" adjustment. The salesdroid said the price was non-negotiable.

 

Go on cars.com and do a saved seach for the TRD PRO. You can enter in millage your willing to travel and colors you prefer. They will email you a few time a week of dealerships that have one or one coming in. If your aliitle patient and willing to travel a few hours, you will find a dealer willing to sell at MSRP. It took me 4 weeks and drove 5 hours, but found my Cement Pro at MSRP. Don't be fooled by the salesman hype. There are plenty of dealers selling the Pros at MSRP. Some dealers selling at MSRP will take a deposit on one they have alocated and you can request what you want added on at the port. Good luck and happy hunting.

 

I bought my TRD Pro Cement at MSRP. 2 things I wish it had heated steering wheel and better sound system. I'm looking now at upgrading the sound system a lot of options. The TRD Pro is an awesome vehicle.

 

Only reason I didn't look at the pro was I wanted a sunroof. Mine has KDSS as well and I'm happy with the way it works.

I ended up installing pro wheels and a pro grill, if you add in the suspension and other things I think the pro is worth it as long as you don't pay anymore than msrp.
I paid -$500 under invoice for my rig, but ended up paying for registration on my own. I'm eligible for a disabled vet plate and it's a 2 step processes and easier to do on my own.

 

I think the Pro is worth it for me. Just joined. Trading my 2015 TRD Sport tacoma in on 2017 White Pro. My forerunner just arrived today at the dealership. I took all my mods off my Tacoma. I did not want a sunroof. The only thing remaining is my awesome audio system that is being removed. The only thing I wish the forerunner had was a better stereo system. Not worried about that. That is a easy fix!!.
