I have a roof cage on my Taco. It's made by BajaRack and I love it. They make them for the 4Runner too. I'm working on getting one for the 4Runner. It mounts directly to the roof. There is NO DRILLING required. Under the factory roof strips, there are already pre-drilled and threaded mounting holes. Its quite easy to install.

There are others that make baskets. Yakima, Thule, etc. But, BajaRack and Gobi are the only ones that make them to cover the roof. (If I'm not mistaken) The others fit to the factory rack and stick up higher than these. BajaRack is cheaper than Gobi too.

Yeah I seen the different brands, I just want something that's not bulky, but still can add light bars and tie stuff down if I need too

Yakima Loadwarrior with 18" middle extension. I've seen these with lights on them but not sure how great that'd really look, and you would lose the modular / temporary aspect. I like that it goes off and on easily, and I don't run it up there all the time.

IMG_8697.jpg I have the rhino large basket, it sits really close to the load bars which personally I like. I can snap some better pictures of it tomorrow if you'd like.

Do you have any issues with opening the back with this position? It is exactly what we would like if it does not interfere with the sunroof.

No issues. There is at least 2" clearance between the hatch at full open and the basket.

I see that you have a crossbar on the basket itself. Did that come with the extension or with the original basket.

Are you buying for show or go?
I started with a cheaper Yakima rack and switched it to the Baja Rack within the first 6 months wasting my money. The Baja Rack is full length and lower and 20 times stronger. We camp a lot and loading up the Baja Rack with everything and not worrying if it's not going to hold up is a great feeling. Lower profile also means less noise as you're driving is key . Plus you can put more add ons that you might decide you need. Lights , ARB awnings , jacks , shovels , Max tracks ,Fuel cans . All items that mount in simple ways to the better racks.

Time to spend some money . FUN

    All, nice racks...!
Anyway, I want to add a rack to my 4R too. I want something I can load wood onto for projects around the house, luggage and gear for trips, etc. I do have plans on a roof top tent next year.

my question is flat vs basket. Can you mount a RTT to a basket style, and is a flat roof rack just as good for hauling gear. I would say flat racks would be better for trips with building materials. ( I like to work around the house)

    Thanks.

Do you happen to know the O.D. of the tubing on the Yakima load warrior rack? I thought about getting 1" heat shrink tubing and installing it at the joints where people say is the first point that shows wear or corrosion. My rack is due Monday from eTrailer. Had a special with the extension for $350 to the door. Could not turn down that deal.

I do not. I don't think you need to shrink wrap it, nor would that really hold up well (doubt it is UV rated). Just silicone the shit out of the joint and the bolt holes.

Thanks,I believe the silicone will suffice. You also made me go look about the heat shrink (Always trying to learn something new daily) and this is what I found. The polyolefin shrink tubing (which I had never heard of) has exceptional resistance to water, fungus, and UV Light according to one site. Thanks again sharing your advice.

Installed my Load Warrior with the extension today. Fairly simple, took my time and was complete in about an hour. I new it would be close to the garage header but ended up with about 4" of clearance. Bought the kit for $350 including delivery from eTrailer. Thanks for all the suggestions especially Meefzah . I took a small amount of clear silicone and filled the joints so that no moisture gets trapped at the joints.
