I guess people buy them for looks. They don't really do anything useful.

Video is just a bunch of lines, no picture. Sound works.

That is YouTube every "Expert" has their Opinion and makes video of it to make money if you look you will find those who say Yay and those who say Nay...:crapstorm: that Video is worthless about CAI because the Type he shows IS only by name a CAI it is not the same as the TRD one.

It is, but his point about moving the intake of air source to under the hood is wrong for the TRD, as it pulls air from the same spot as the oem intake. The point about perceived power gains being highly questionable is valid.

I think his point in the video was the that CAI box was in the same location as the factory box, and therefore was not pulling any colder air than the stock box.

I didn't see that point when he shows a junk one pulling air from the Engine bay and mentions hot air from Engine bay, I would not say that the TRD one pulls colder air however it is noticeably less restrictive, Makes tons of HP sound...:D makes you wanna open that hood to show it <----I like that part because those who open the Engine bay to show also are the ones who keep it clean therefore easier to work on.

I appreciate your ""keep it clean" remark. While I do not have a CAI. I keep my engine bay clean. After every trip the 4R gets a complete cleaning. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. But as they say, "to each his own". Have a great day.

And I should add that I don't judge anyone's purchase. We all mod our 4Rs to the level that suit us. My only purpose for sharing information, is so that each person can make their own informed decision.

Yes, it's for looks but zero noticeable power gains. Louder noises too I guess.

Hmm yah, i like this idea too. Just want the sound to be honest lol. Easier, more open access for cleaning is also a nice benefit.

I've watched the video several times, and what he refers to as a waste of money and time is a 'cold air intake' which relocates the air filter and pulls air from inside the engine bay, which is a contradiction, as how can a 'cold air' intake pull air from the engine bay and be said to be using cold air (compared to drawing it from outside). He also mentions some may want to relocate the air intake AWAY from the wheel well because of 'larger tires, water intrusion' and such, but again if you do that, you cannot call what you're installing a cold air intake.

My take on his video mention of 'cold air intakes' being a waste of time and money is aftermarket "CAI"s that do not pull air from the same place as the oem intake, but from under the hood instead, which is a valid point. As stated previously, he has a point about the lack of increased power on all of these, but never did I see him mention that the TRD intake supposedly pulls 'colder air' than the oem.

I just bought a real CAI for my GTO because the stock one pulls from a small vent in the engine bay.

I thought he said that aftermarket CAI's were a waste of money (on Tacomas and other vehicles like it [4runner]) because they're pulling air from the same location as the stock unit (which he mentions is already a CAI). His point being that there is no point to them (on these particular vehicles) because the air you're getting is not any colder than the stock unit.

The example that he uses of someone who could benefit from a CAI was from other vehicles where the stock unit wasn't a CAI's in the first place.

What's obvious from 7 pages of this thread is some like it, some don't, and @wdsteven will go on installing these for beer money on any willing 4R EDIT: or Tacoma owner within reach..

This thread was fun to read. I ordered the parts from BAM and will get some fancy red vacuum tubing for extra HP. Purchased the 16" MAF wire harness adapter as well so I don't have to cut any loom. Hopefully I won't have to plug the hole but will use the method listed above if I do. Thanks for all of the info.

Installed over the weekend following the advice from this thread. I did have to plug the small hole on bottom right side of the air box. But a simple plastic clip and selant fixed that. Red vacuum tube looks nice as well. Again thanks to all for the info in this thread.

Looks good. What are your initial impressions? Does this add a substantial amount of noise?

It is louder/throatier but only under heavier acceleration. I much prefer the tone of the TRD Intake over the stock.
