For the first 16 years of my career, I recommended the job when people asked me if I liked it. For the last 5 years I couldn't tell them to stay away from it fast enough. Get out while you still can.

I heavily thought about getting out all together, but decided to try a different agency first. If that doesn't do it, I will likely change careers all together. I still enjoy what I do, time just might have to be the factor that changes my mind.

I manage maintenance and clean utilities for a biotech startup. We’re growing human blood vessels from scratch. Pretty wild stuff. We’ve actually provided some to hospitals in Ukraine.

You're the Summit deputy, yeah? I was just south of you working municipal LE up until 12-31 and I was hating life... Got hired at the county in court services, and it's glorious. Still have a commission, but I'll never have to search a nasty house again, pull a OVI at end of watch, or get cold or wet on a call again! Plus weekends and holidays off. This black and heather gray thing is pretty damn good and let's be honest the gold star is a badass badge to carry...

We had two titles for the deputies assigned to court security; "RoD" (Retired on Duty), and "grand theft: paycheck". :D Definitely a glorious assignment. The joke was that during your year in courts, you could "finish the internet".

Yeah I always kind of laughed that job off, thinking it wasn't a real cop job.

But I've humped a patrol car in 2 states, for 5 agencies, over 25 years now. I've been promoted up but I've always been in patrol. I'm just tired of it. I've been tired of it for about the last decade honestly - but tired as I was of it I never really wanted to go to the DB or do anything else within the department.

I have always enjoyed going to court though and I'm fascinated by the judicial process. After talking to some of those guys I started thinking that maybe that gig wouldn't be too bad. I'm definitely not ROD and I'm still proactive, so that will be an adjustment for me, but I think the overall benefits are better for me and it'll be nice to work normal hours for the first time (consistently) in my entire career.

That's sound reasoning. Most folks go kicking and screaming into courts for their first rotation, since they are usually young, and with dreams of glory. But the truth is you can learn a ton in the assignment. You get on a first-name basis with all the judges, ADA's, and defense attorneys, you learn how to write a good report, how to testify, etc. Like anything in life, you get out of it what you put into it.

No doubt the court service deal is a "retire on duty" gig. It is a well earned spot (for most) who did their time. I'm far from that privilege. Some day perhaps!

I wasn't going to comment but I like the idea of following the guy who sexually assaulted a cop car. I guess technically it might have been consensual but the occupants seem to have disagreed. I am a marine engineer in the offshore oil and gas industry. I work on engines that are larger than a 4runner that all have over 100K run hours then go home and drive a fourth gen with 300K miles. I'm a big fan of longevity.

EDIT: May sound ironic but I would also like to say thanks to all our LEO, Fire, EMS, and Military personnel. This thread is loaded with you guys.

I was a software engineer for many years, but have always been an outdoorsman. So not a weird combination at all. Now I get to be outdoors as much as I want, as I am retired.

I get yelled at for a living.
I tell people they have a cold and that they do not need antibiotics, and I get yelled at.
I tell people they have COVID and they yell at me because they were vaccinated and there is no way they can get it.
I tell people with chest pain that they need to go to the ER, and they yell at me.

    Funny but not…
My long time excellent primary physician told me that his long time excellent medical assistant recently retired early, suffering from depression from being verbally abused from patients the last 2 years. She was as sweet and professional as they come. He told me for the first time in his career he actually had to “release” a few patients for verbal abuse.
Now he has early retired primary for the same reason. I truly miss them both! My new ones hardly even return a call. Society is pretty sick these days…

This is the absolute truth. I see 60 patients daily on average, and it takes a toll. This is why nurses are leaving the field. Not to mention, Nurse Practitioners now are specializing and making loads of cash. That isn't helping either.

Retired truck driver, both local and long haul, driven in all 48 states and 3 provinces of Canada. Parked on the Texas/Mexico border with a tanker and stretched a hose to a Mexican trucker to make a transfer, (about 40 years ago, wouldn’t get away with that now.) Close as I can figure, have somewhere between 3.5 to 4 million miles. Can’t say they’re accident free though, almost died a couple times, didn’t say I was a Great truck driver

Like in the Linda Ronstat song “driven every kind of rig thats ever been made” So the fact that I choose to drive a 4Runner must mean something.
