Hi everyone, my first post! I'm a new 4runner owner (2022 off road) I'm wondering if 60 to 70 mph is ok while in 4WD?

Also, what would be the max safe speed to shift into 4WD?

Please check the manual online. If I'm not mistaken its 52mph for the manual shifter vs 55mph for electronic/ rotating selector and no speed limit for the full time 4wd Limited to engage center diff lock.

Again I can't remember exact speeds but should be closer to what i said.

I thought that it was 50mph for manual shift to 4HI and a complete stop, shift to neutral for 4LO. I don’t think that there is a max speed. If you’re using 4HI for snow or ice, I don’t see 60-70 being a safe speed.

    Welcome to the forum!

Check the manual, but I believe it's somewhere around 50 MPH as mentioned above.

Agreed. If conditions are good enough to drive that fast, 4WD shouldn't be necessary.

Im pretty sure if you hit 88 mph in 4WD you can travel back in time or to the future.

Id go back to the 80s and convince my dad to get a first year runner and save for many years.

The question of "why do you need to go so fast in 4WD" It's due to driving in the north on freeways that are subject to patches compact snow and or black ice (this was yesterday for me for 250 miles) AWD vehicles fly by slower ones un-fettered by the "should I be in 4WD" question. They throw slush and sand/ gravel onto your windshield, not intentionally, that's just how it is.

If you could without fear pop it into 4WD and stay with the flow of traffic, problem solved. In 2WD I was sliding all over the place, passed a semi and 5 cars in the ditch.

Before I hit the highway when there is snow or ice spots I just throw it in 4H while I drive under 50mph then I don't worry even if I hit 85mph on dry road. As long as I don't do sharp turns like turning to other roads I'm not worried about been in 4H.

You can go about as fast as you can stand. Stopping is the hard part.

Understand, but if you’re passing cars in the ditch that means conditions are unsafe regardless of what kind of drivetrain you have. Cars in the ditch indicate tires losing traction. Doesn’t matter if you have AWD or 4WD if the tires won’t grip the road.

Your tires are always going to be far more important than the type of AWD system you do or don’t have. Especially once you’re at significant speeds.

Once again, if conditions are like that you should not be going 70mph. You hit black ice and start sliding, 4wd is not going to save you.

I run a dedicated winter wheel/tire combo, Blizzak DMV2, and would be hesitant about passing anyone in a ditch. I have been stuck behind slow-moving vehicles and just patiently wait until I have a safe area to pass. Even the winter tire and 4WD will reach their limit if pushed. Measuring limit based on snow depth, incline, ice, etc., and not measuring limit based on speed. Try making an emergency stop or maneuver at 70MPH in icy or snowy conditions. Just because you can trek at 70MPH in a straight line with 4WD, it doesn't make it safe.

Agree with above. Why are people driving 50+ in 4WD? 4WD makes it go....it does not make any difference in stopping.
