Changing oil every 2,000 miles

2,000 miles? I mean I guess if you feel like it and have the ability/funds all the power to ya.

 

it is the best insurance for you engine. every 2,000.

 

Could you have the wrong oil filter installed?
Didn’t buy it from Amazon did you?

 

But why 2K and not 1k or 500 miles? The best insurance is to simply change it regularly but not go too long on it. 5K is ok and even 10K is fine but to me that’s pushing it.

 

Unless you have an oil analysis performed for your specific driving conditions it means nothing. 2k, 3k, 5k, 10k.

 

Looks like you stuffed a too tall filter into that housing. Then when you cranked it down it crushed to fit.
Do not use after market filters. Use Toyota OEM. They’re not expensive.

 

It’s a mobile 1 filter that is supposed to fit the 4runner. I’ll see what the next one looks like. Only thing that I changed last go around was going to a metal housing. I went 11-12k on it as I didn’t find time to change it—usually change at 10k using Mobile 1 oil. I like having the metal housing since my plastic one broke but this last filter has me concerned.

 

I think Mobil1 got their dimensions wrong.The OEM filter is 80 mm long, about 3.5 inches.

 

Either this or the wrong filter was in the box.

Check a few boxes next time and make sure the filters are all the same size.

 

Or just buy the proper OEM Filter!

 

Agree, after reading all the various posts on these forums for some time, I find it interesting how we love our 5th gens and express how well they are built, but go to great lengths to use non OEM parts? I don’t get it.

 

I guess I’ll start ordering factory filters. One other theory on why my filter looks like this is it could have been stuck at the top and me turning the housing to remove it could have twisted it. But I’ll measure mobile 1 next to a factory filter for the next change.

I'm going to start doing 2k oil changes with that used fryer oil in the back of the restaurants. I cant wait for my exhaust to smell like french fries, or maybe egg rolls, or maybe chicken cutlets or bacon.

 

Even in the 1980s we didn’t change oil every 2k. And we used to drive old beaters 150-200k even then.

What a waste.

 

i would not say that. from my first car till now it has always been 2,000 miles and never had a major engine problem. you oil and filter is the number 1 protection for your vehicle.

 

If you are interested in the TRD filters I found the Royal Purples filters are exactly the same. I like how they are built with metal end caps and orings on each end. The Royal Purple are a little less expensive than the TRD filters but readily available. The TRD oil filters are always out of stock at the dealers. I attached a couple of pics. They only difference is the Royal Purple doesnt have the TRD embossed cap.

 

I purchased the TRD filters just for the hell of it. $16 from my dealer.

 

Dude its your truck and cash (evidently your other cars too). Granted a bit over cautious unless you're running a top fuel dragster to redline every gear of 3 second runs. I'm not one to judge anyone, yall could have a hay day for the shit I've done in my life.

At least you're not changing it every 30k.

But that doesn’t prove that changing your oil prevented them. First car I ever owned with my own cash was a 1982 Honda Accord sedan. 72hp 4 cylinder and a 5 speed manual. Used 10w-30 conventional.

I drove that thing until the late 90s and only finally got rid of it when the rear subframe rusted out and it would no longer pass inspection. I changed the oil every 3000-4000 as per the manual and the only issues I ever had with it was burning out the clutch and a bad fuel pump around 170k, neither of which would have been avoided no matter how frequently I changed oil.

My point is, if an engine designed in the late 70s got along fine with 3000+ intervals, changing at 2000 on a modern engine just because doesn’t make a lot of sense..,

 

its just me guy--- lets say it is a family thing. my dad did it with his rides and it stuck with me. to each his/her own thing.

 

My 33yr old 4R w/280K has had oil changes at every odometer increment of 5K miles since I bought it new and doesn’t burn any oil and runs perfect. It could use a throttle body shaft bushing rebuild as the TPS is a bit tricky to adjust…..that’s it.

 

These filters have an inner metal tube with small slits? This goes over the stock metal tube in the filter cap? Seems like a very restrictive design that'll cause the bypass valve to open more often.

 

why nobody thing about additives package in oil. additives are main part of oil, they work as intended in engine, and they are wears out. calcium, phosphorus, boron, molybdenum, etc. breaks down and wears out, like everything else. but we discussing only viscosity, falling into the trick of marketing. even most beloved Amsoil has only partial content of additives, compare to OEM Toyota oil. one, among many, criteria is price: more expensive oil has more additives

 

Hmmm… interesting.
That, and maybe it’s the angle of the photos, but it looks like there’s bigger and less pleats in the RP filter, so less surface area of filter media.

Plus, one of the touted benefits of the regular paper filter is less waste to throw away. The TRD-type filter has almost as much metal as a traditional canister type, minus the thin metal skin.

 

I don’t know man, but those TRD pleats look like they were lovingly hand-stiched.

Heres a page from 2022 Limited 4R owners manual that a new member from Chile posted couple days ago, all good up to 10W30. I'm running M1 AFS 5W30 API SP and changing oil fairly often in severe temperature and city service, if I was long distance highway driving I'd stretch oil changes out some.
