    My source is good - Looking forward to more news about the '18 4R....Likely to slowly trickle out. Does not sound like a new Gen, but rather a change/improvement......And we wait. Clay

    Looking at a typical Toyota calendar year....When should an official announcement about the 2018's be released. I was in this boat back in 2015 when I wanted to buy a new Tacoma....There was a boat-load of information about the new 2016's on-line.....Long before we knew what the truck was going to really be. If use this as my guild, it appears the 2018 4R will not be changed very much. Am I missing something?

    I'm interested in any info on the '18s as well. After reading the posts in this thread, I have to wonder why Toyota won't give an option for a V8 in the 4Runner. I'm guessing it has something to do with weight? The "weak" engine is the only thing keeping me from going with a 4Runner, if they had it as an option, I would have bought one years ago. When you're driving at altitude in the mountains, you want the extra power. The one comment here about pushing the gas and getting "nothing" back is exactly why I haven't pulled the trigger. Besides, I'm getting 14.4 combined in my V8 GC. Easily 20 on highway. Is a V8 option a complete pipe dream?

    V8 was an option in the 4th Gen 4runner (2003-2009).

    IMHO - 270 hp is NOT under-powered. If you are in the mountains you don't need power for speed as speed and mountains don't mix well. If you need more power in the mountains you use a lower gear. This is why semi's don't have 5,000 hp engines.

    True, if you're off road you don't necessarily need any more power than that. Maybe torque, but not HP. However, when you're driving on a mountain highway at 10,000' and you want to pass someone, it's nice to have that power when you floor it, which I do daily. I get why they discontinued it in the previous model, it was all timing with the economy and gas prices, which led to poor sales. But there obviously *was* a market for a V8, and I'm sure there still is. So come on Toyota, give me the option for a TRD Pro with a V8, and an option for an exterior Black color. I'd be all over it.

    I fully understand your interest. (My Mom lived in Durango, have relatives in the Vail Valley)....However looking at this from Toyota's perspective, what percentage of their customers in North American are going to be driving at 10,000 Ft (AMSL) at any given time and need more HP so they can floor it? No car-maker is going to design any product for mass appeal based on that criteria. They will gain more sales by incorporating features that appeal to Soccer Moms and weekend adventure seekers who just want to picnic or camp off the beaten path - IMHO - Clay

    You don't have to be at 10,000' to get the benefit. You'd benefit on a highway in Florida as well. See the guy's post in this thread about turning left with traffic coming... it would benefit here too. What percentage? Not sure, start a poll. There is a market though if Jeep still has the 360HP option in the Grand Cherokee. I'm sure it has to do more with streamlining production, than giving the people what they want.

    Just chiming in...I also think that 270hp is good enough but I think gearing is setup more for offroad use. I have both a 2016 Trail and 2011 Sienna. Both vehicles have been used for our family vacations from MN to SD -> YellowStone -> Grand Teton -> Jackson Hole. They weigh about the same but reacted very differently to road inclines/undulations.

    I live in the middle of the Colorado mountains, own three 4Runners with 6 cylinder engines and have no problems with power for passing or towing a reasonably light trailer.

    As I recently posted on the Tacoma Forum - There are several trends that we all need to get used to -
    1) Smaller displacement engines, 2) More Turbo/Super charging 3)More transmission ratios 4)More use of Hybrid technology. The days of the big, slow turning engines are over. Even Diesel, that loves to deliver lots of low-end torque is being replace with electric motors that will do it too. I suspect that future 4Runners will embrace many of these things in the future - The big question is - When! - Clay

    I agree. I think Toyota will put the 3.5L in the 4R, but they won't do it in its current state. I think they will add a turbo to it first. I don't think this will happen in 2018.

    I think they will put turbos in the Tacoma's as well.

    Eventually, it would be cool to see a small electric motor powering each wheel of a 4Runner. Imagine the 4x4 applications and the torque!

    Has anyone else heard this? The 2018 4Runner TRD Pro will not be changed in any way from the 2017 except for colors. The only colors offered are white, Calvary Blue and Midnight Black. No more Cement.

    My sales guy said there will not be a change with the 2018, they would have already been made aware in order to gear up for said change...that may have just been dealer BS. We are getting on in years for the 5th gen, and given the profitable US market why would they give up on selling the 4R? So don't think that is in the cards, IMO. You know something (fancy jazzed up headlights?) will change if there is a 2018 and it will be more expensive. That is why I bought the 2017, it is a known entity. If the 2018 has an ugly change, the latest version will be all the more scarce and pricey IMHO, have you seen what they are asking for a 2015 with 30K..? It would be sad if the 4R went the way of the Pathfinder, and the online photos of possible new incarnations of the 4R scared the crap out of me.

    Signed up for this forum just because of this thread...

    Have been debating between 2017 Tacoma and 2017 4Runner... I do a lot of driving in the mountains in snow (>100 days per year). Want the vehicle to be capable in snow and off-road for my rec purposes. Sounds like the 3.5L on the 3rd gen Tacos is not well-received. 4Runner was my first choice anyway. Due to the deal I can get, the 4Runner TRD Off Road (formerly trail version) is the most likely candidate. I'm not looking for speed, just looking for a capable vehicle with plenty of room for dogs and gear that can get me through Utah's rugged terrain. This model also has KDSS.

    Any recommendations? Sound like this would fit my needs? Any feedback on KDSS?

    Installed Rago brackets and 4" cube ditch lights. Weather tech mats. Cargo net. Cargo mat. Ordered Gobi rack with ladder.
    4 runner all the way. Drove ours to the Rockies, through all sorts of weather. Handled like a tank. You will be hooked forever with the runner.

    As a point of reference - I have a 2016 Tacoma/Sport/Access Cab/with a MANUAL transmission. I have no issues with my truck nor the engine in 31,000 miles. Looks to me that most of the bad rap the Tacoma's have been receiving were related to their Automatic Transmission. As someone pointed out a while back - The Tacoma is designed to 'haul-stuff' The 4Runner is designed to Haul People. I will very likely purchase a 2018 4R, not to replace my Tacoma but rather to replace my Camry. If you are into 'doing things' to your vehicle there is a significant greater number of modifications available for the Tacoma than for the 4R..Ooodles of aftermarket stuff. Check out the 'What have you done to you ____ lately on both of the forums to see what I mean. If you want your dogs inside - (depending on their size) both the Tacoma Double-Cab and the 4R would do the job. If you want a bed haul dirty stuff (recently removed tire chains for example) think Tacoma. In my case - I think one of each is perfect!

    I just received this email from a dealer in Vancouver:
    Hi Warren: We just received the info on the 2018 4Runner. There aren't any changes for the 2018's. The only change on thr TRD Pro is colour changes. There is a new blue (I haven't seen this colour before) and a different black. White is still available. The 3 colours available are white(which you ordered)the new blue (Calvary Blue) and Midnight Black. Toyota has your order and we just need to wait for notification when it will be scheduled to be built. I will contact Toyota at the next week to see what info the have on production. If anything new, I will contact you.
