    I find it hard to believe they would get rid of the 4R. It's still one of the top 10 best selling SUVs in the US. The FJ's were always a low volume seller when they were in production and didn't even come close to the 4R in sales numbers. My best guess is that we're not hearing about the '18 4R because there won't be many changes.

    Between my lead foot, lots of idleing, and having a 3in lift and big tires, and me slamming on my breaks because everyone here has no clue what a stop sign is, and everyone drives 15-20 under the speed limit. So it is all me and the mods i have done.

    yeah I get stuck in stop and go traffic to and from work so lots of hurry up so we can sit and idle. When I get out of town the mileage is way better.

    I mostly idle in parking lots, before work, so i dont have to wait in the heat, because down here it is about 80 at 7am. But in the city there is a ton of traffic and the country roads are starting to become suburbanized. So it is a long stretch of road where people are doing 45 when they should be doing 65 so i start weaving in and out which stains my mpg.

    20170209_115811.jpg IMG_20170502_191228.jpg Brand new to this Forum! Bought my wife the 16 4Runner Trail last Christmas, Just bought the 17 Taco the end of April. Both vehicles cost almost the same out the door ($39000). Over all I would say the quality of the 4Runner is better but we love them both! The Taco is a manual transmission and it is Sweet.

    I had a 2016 Tacoma, the 3.5 is a POS with the 6 speed auto. With 33s and 4.88 gears, 6th gear was still useless. The gear hunting was insane, zero low end power, terrible choice for a truck engine. Sold it with 3500 miles on it after 8 months of ownership and bought my 2016 4Runner. Couldn't be happier. The 3.5 will be the death of the 4Runner.

    I very much like and appreciate my 2016 Tacoma/Sport/Access Cab. Just had my 30,000 mile maintenance. I have two friends that have them and both have grumbled about the automatic transmission. Interestingly Toyota has upgraded the software in both of their trucks and they - now - like them a lot better. Additionally there is an aftermarket device that makes the transmission behave more conventionally as opposed to be a computer controlled device searching for the best fuel mileage. i get the feeling you bought the wrong truck. The reason I love my Tacoma is because the transmission computer is ME ! I have a 6 speed manual and, once i understood the power curve of the engine, we get along just fine. You will find a ton of similar comments from others on the Tacoma Forum that have Manuals. An automatic, I suppose, has it's place...Just not under my butt. My Wife and I are seriously considering buying a 4R. This will be her primary ride...the ONLY thing about the 4R that she does not like ....The fact that she can't get a stick! (She drives a 2010 Camry LE with a 6 speed MANUAL)

    I had 2 ref lashes done, transmission was much better but not what it should be. An engine with no low end power and peak horsepower at 6000 rpm doesn't belong in a truck. The fact an aftermarket devise has to be purchased to make the transmission act normally is unacceptable. The manual transmission would likely have been a better option but that's very sad to have to say in 2016

    You are correct I think Toyota should be held accountable for it also. I lost 5k on my truck because I couldn't stand driving that pos anymore

    In the market, but maybe not, after reading about the V6 3.5 in the '16 and 17's, and that the new 4R (if there is one in '18) will have the same 3.5....I have a '98 V6 PreRunner TRD OR, love it to death, 240k on it and I'm looking for new, rather than pump more cash into it, been driven hard and looks it. If any of you who just bought could do it again, buy used? (Waiting on any '18 info before I shop)

    With 30,000 miles in my 2016 Taco under my belt I can make the following observations - 1) I am thankful I have a Manual Transmission. Those that do have come to appreciate the 'Hockey Stick' power curve of the 3.5 . 2) Sadly the engineers at Toyota failed to adequately fully understand what needed to be done when they mated a new 6 speed auto behind it. I have two friends that have the AT version of the truck I have...and they are perplexed by the transmission. I suspect that Toyota is abundantly aware of the situation as evidenced by the fact that there are TSB's out there that, when implemented, make the 'bitch level' go down a bit. I don't fault the 3.5, but clearly fault Toyota for producing a power train that is the scorn of so many. Frankly I can't see them putting the 3.5 and (present form) transmission in the 4R. Toyota has a reputation that has been tarnished by the 2016 Tacoma and amplified by Consumer Reports and existing customers. Doing it again with the 4R would a shocker. I'd love to see them go back to putting an MT in the 4R...If they did I'd place an order now... We would like see a new 4R in our garage this fall. I too am waiting to see what they do, hence me starting this thread in the first place. Clay

    You are correct Toyota completely dropped the ball with the 3rd gen Tacoma. I bought a 2017 and drove it for 7000 miles and couldn't take it anymore. It's by far the worst driving experience I have ever had. The 4Runner is years ahead of the Tacoma. Cost me 5k is what pisses me off with Toyota!!! And on top of it they are still selling those pos AT Tacoma's that are junk with no improvements

    I don't have a T4R.....yet.....but I was commenting on the other post..... @Nway2deep has both though.

    According to Toyota specs -- 191" for the T4R and 212" for the DCSB.

    That's a good question. They both serve different needs so it would depend on how you plan on using your vehicle. The 4 runner is built with higher standards and will probably last longer so if you don't have a need for a truck with a bed, I would get the runner.

    Additionally, if you don't own a truck you won't have friends that like to move all the time. Lol.

    I looked up the lengths of the two vehicles - The 4R is 21 inches shorter than my Access Cab Taco - Check off another one. Now to find out what the 2018 4R will be like before we take the plunge. (I hear Crickets)

    My sources are telling me that the 18 Runner will have the Toyota Safety Sense system...Double good news as this indicates there will indeed be a 2018 T4R - Clay

    I traded my 2017 TRD OR Tacoma after 4K miles. I could not stand the way it shifted or the wind noise.

    I love the 2017 SR5 4Runner. The old 4.0 drivetrain is miles ahead of the 3.5. I also prefer every aspect of the interior of the 4R. It is simply a better vehicle. I plan to keep this vehicle a long time. I also get better mileage in town (18) with the 4R than I ever did in the truck (15)

    Maybe with a MT the taco would have been better. I don't know. If the auto transmission could be sorted out it would be much better.

    Indeed it would have been. I've got 31K on my 2016 Taco (Access Cab with 6 speed manual) and love it. I have two friends with the same truck with the AT and have to listen to their grumbles.. I bought mine first and they all thought I was stupid....Not anymore! Lets hope that Toyota does not ruin the AT in the 4R as an '18 is in my future.

    I don't mind a manual transmission at all, but my wife has no idea how to drive one and isn't interested in learning. That's why I bought the auto.
    When the truck is new, or after the memory is reset on the learning mode the truck drives/shifts fine. This makes the test drive deceptive because the learning mode has not begun to screw thongs up yet. At least that was my experience, and I had my trucks memory reset 3x, and had the TSB flash done.
    I understand all vehicles have issues, but the reason I bought a new truck was because I don't want to mess with issues right now. I sold my Jeep and a well set up crew can Chevy for the Tacoma.

    On the other hand, I can't say enough good about the 4Runner. It's great, and while I miss the bed I now have the opportunity to build or buy a trailer.

    I wish the tacoma was basically a 4Runner with a bed.
