I did contact Mike, and have a slot for the upgrade. He mentioned low end torque and MPG improvements. Anything else?

Thank you. Because of the holiday weekend, I may not be able to get the upgrade for a couple of weeks. I will provide feedback when I have had a chance to drive with it quite a bit.

The tacoma guys who are tuned have had zero problems with smog testing in California. So, I would think that 4runners would also have no problems.

I'm trying to clarify some aspects of the "product" which is basically just a software upgrade for the 4Runner that changes shift points, timing, fuel mapping, etc.

The last tune I did involved a a file being emailed to me, and me downloading it into a Diablo tuner that I then plugged into my OBDII port and upgraded my software. Since I owned the tuner, I could remove the tune any time I wanted, and could re-install it any time I wanted. There were also 3 different tunes included; one for increased mpg and drivability, one for increased power, and a third one for racing and required 92 octane fuel or higher. It was great and well worth the $125 for the tuning file, and the $400 for the tuner, which I still own today and can use for diagnostic duties.

My first concern is that it seems like you have to drive to some dude's house and he takes your $500, plugs in a tuner, downloads the tune into your computer, and you drive off. The price seems a bit steep for literally 5 minutes of data transfer and no ability to remove and re-install the tune at the owner's convenience.

The second concern is I keep seeing comments about how smooth the transmission shifts after the tune. Smooth shifts usually mean more/longer disc slippage during shifts and can seriously shorten the life of the transmission. Coming from a performance perspective, you want firmer shifts that reduce disc wear and decrease shift times for increased performance. Did the creators of the tune consult with Toyota transmission experts as to how much increased wear their tune will cause?

Don't get me wrong; I love a good tune and realize the benefits are worth some money, but from what I've read, I have some concerns.

There is a lot that goes into creating tunes. The time and effort put into creating a tune file is time consuming. Testing and logging of all parameters takes time and a lot of effort.
There are also credit costs that vary from different year and models. For instance the 2020 to 2022 4Runner costs each tuner 10 credits at $170 to register the truck to vftuner. That $170 goes to vftuner. Not the tuner who installs the tune.
You do have the option to buy the DIY vftuner kit and KDMAX tune file. This DIY kit will give you all the same options you had with your Diablo tuner. It sounds like this is what your looking for.
We have tuned a few Toyota master techs who had the same concerns as you do on there own tuned Toyota's. Like Shifting, Temps, Knock. They tested and logged there own Toyota's and reported back that we are at or below stock values. They have said we are adding longevity to the powertrain by eliminating the gear hunting and the constant over revving caused by the gear hunting.
You will get great customer service with any KDMAX group tuner. It is not pull up get tuned and see you later. They will have all your information for any future needs. If you need any help all you will need is to contact your tuner and set up a time to meet. Most all changes are done free.
Our current Pro-9.0 is a free upgrade to anyone tuned now on Pro+XT. If your on an older tune then yes there is an upgrade fee. Contact your specific tuner for cost. If your not happy with the tune most all of the KDMAX group tuners have a limited money back guarantee. Some offer a 2 week guarantee others have a 30 day ask your tuner what he offers. The credit costs paid to vftuner are not refundable. Its by far the best money you can spend on your Toyota.

There is a Tuner location map on the first post of this thread. There appears to be 2 tuners covering NM.

Just as a little helper, when you pull the map up if you hit the + key at the bottom left a couple times you can see the location better.

Tuned the first 2023 4Runner today. Solar Octane Pro. The owner- Troy was happy with the improvements. SSO (Southern Style OffRoad) in Baton Rouge was doing his sliders and front bumper. They called with the referral. Customer lives in Georgia-near Rich @Stormpeacock, so he’ll have support when he gets home.

You’re a tuner company, yet you still haven’t put a 4Runner on a dyno to show people what your tune can actually do for them. This tune could only be doing what the Pedal Commander does. We don’t know. Put a 4Runner on a dyno and show us. You just keep saying, we haven’t done it.

I'm a gearhead, too and understand where you're coming from and wanting to see numbers. I haven't tuned my new 4R yet, but I did tune my '20 Tacoma with KDMax. They posted a dyno graph for that tune on the Tacoma forum and it's impressive. I don't know if the 4R will benefit as much in HP and TQ, but it's not all about dyno numbers, either. Drivability was enhanced to an incredible degree in the Tacoma and if the 4R tune is only half as good, it is money well spent in my opinion.
When I bought my new 4R, the tune was one of the first things on my list to do. Even bought the tuner package and credits before I got the 4R! Had to wait until the 23s were supported and now that they are, the 4R is getting flashed this weekend!
There are a lot of reviews on the Tacoma tune and they are real-world reviews - honest, actual users and not an advertisement. I've personally dealt with Kreg and Chris and they are the epitome of customer service, too. Hard to find a better customer service experience anywhere!
Like I said, haven't tuned the 4R yet, but the Tacoma tune by the same guys is the real deal.
