The 4runner is like a limousine compared to a Tacoma. That's one of the things that influenced me to switch back.

Edit, nice S chassis. A guy I used to hang out with has one, LS swapped, turbo. He's running 10's.

 

It was the first TRD Pro Sequoia I've seen in person and I don't see many Sequoias in the city (let alone a TRD Pro).

Not sure if you are daily driving it around the city but most car owners who live in Manhattan, only use it to travel out of the city. In the outer boroughs (especially Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island), drivers use vehicles for every day tasks, but there is also typically less congestion. If the first scenario represents your situation, I could see a reason to stick with the Sequoia. If you are driving around the city more often (say once or twice per week), the 4Runner is definitely more nimble, relatively speaking. I've come to realize the perfect NYC car is a 5-10 year old Prius that you don't care much about.

I frequently travel to Vermont for skiing/snowboarding and the 4Runner is perfect for that. I don't have a family yet but we have fit 4 adults, luggage, and ski gear comfortably in the past (rooftop ski rack definitely recommended). I'm sure your little humans take up less space and have less baggage than an adult so the 4Runner should be more than adequate.

 

I rarely use the car to get around the city. Either we walk, take the subway or taxi/Uber. The only exception would be going somewhere like Coney Island or the Botanical Gardens, in which case we would drive.

I drive into NJ occasionally for work or to visit family. Other than that, we go on occasional road trips to places like the Catskills, Bear Mountain, Vermont, Massachusetts etc.

The rooftop ski rack is good idea. But that would definitely not clear the garage. And I totally agree, having a car you actually care about in NYC is just asking for headaches. That’s primarily why I don’t bring the Land Cruiser here too often.

I can definitely see the case for both sides, either keeping the Sequoia or trading for the 4R. Life is all about compromises and tradeoffs.

 

If you barely use it in Manhattan, then I can see keeping the Sequoia. I can't speak from experience but I expect the 4Runner is only marginally more nimble in the outer boroughs (except for maybe Brooklyn, where the 4Runner would be easier to squeeze down tight streets).

It's definitely a toss up for your needs but I personally don't think the Sequoia size is necessary for only a family of 4. If you are planning to grow the family, then keeping the Sequoia long term might be warranted, but the 4Runner should be more than capable to handle 4 humans and all of the accompanying baggage (4 is even in the name!). I might be slightly biased since I own a 4Runner but either vehicle is a great choice.

Side note I just thought: the 4Runner is subject to the same "oversized vehicle" charges in parking garages, so there is no benefit there.

 

As much as I like my 4runner. Thats a hard choice.

The sequoia trd pro is a beast with the 5.7. And its just as reliable as the 4.0.

 

No plans on having more kids. So we’d probably be okay with the 4R. We do occasionally have family visiting, and it’s nice to have the third row at those times. But it’s not often that we really need it.

Interestingly, I checked with a garage down the street and they don’t charge the oversized fee for 4R but they would charge it for the Sequoia. My current garage charges the oversized rate for both vehicles. Either way it’s a small fortune to pay for parking. The joys of NYC…

 

Yes, this is my dilemma! The 5.7 is such a joy to drive. And the sound is gorgeous. The Sequoia apparently has rock solid reliability, despite not being built in Japan.

 

I’m super confused why you want peoples insight… either trade it off for a 4Runner or keep it.

By you asking us for insight, the vehicle you wanted it probably already gone and your trade offer has probably depleted too.

How is the insurance cost on either vehicle; i would imagine both as suspectible to theft as the other?

 

Fair enough. I’ll admit it’s a first world problem. I just wanted to get some insight from 4R owners before I make a decision. The replies so far have been very informative.

 

According to my insurance agent, the premium on the Sequoia and the 4R is virtually identical. Full coverage runs about $850/year for either one.

 

I have owned a 2020 4Runner TRD Pro and a 2021 Tundra TRD Pro.

I then owed a handful of Toyota in between too.

I have sold them all to come back to a 4Runner but a limited this time as I wanted 3rd row, smooth ride and quiet ride.

plus I don’t need to tow heavy stuff or need a truck bed. And also the tundra took more time to clean. I ain’t got time for that ha!

Which ski rack do you use, and is it compatible with the factory TRD Pro roof rack?

 

I use the Yakima Fat Cat 6. The mounts/feet are adjustable to fit most factory roof racks. I don't see why it wouldn't fit the TRD Pro rack (the crossbars are not much thicker). It's also fairly easy to install and remove when needed. I tend to leave it on throughout the winter but you can just as easily put it on just for a trip.
If you want a cheaper alternative, I've been happy with Inno racks in the past but they are not as low profile. Thule is another popular alternative but usually more expensive.

 

The 4.0 isn't much a joy to drive. Its more like a turtle, haha. Tuning definitely makes it much more enjoyable but thats not everyone's cup of tea.

If It was me. Id swap that sequoia for a raptor, only because I'm still a child....I wouldn't swap for a 4runner. That sequoia of yours is awesome.

 

Out of curiosity, what direction do you think you're leaning to?

 

Leaning towards trading for the 4R. This deal is hard to refuse, if it actually materializes.

Part of me feels like I’ll miss the space and power of the Sequoia, and wind up having regrets. Once that Sequoia is gone, it’s gone for good. No way I’d buy the current generation with the turbo and fancy gizmos.

 

Sell the Sequoia and drive the Land Cruiser! Who cares if the kids beat it up, thats what memories are made of! Plus, its an LC, you'll have it forever and maybe pass it down to one of them.

You know it’s funny because I think the 4.0 is perfect for me anyway. I don’t need anything fast. I have the Acura for that. For me in my 40s the 4.0 is plenty of power. I bought it for the long term durability and reputation.

Having said that I wish I would have pulled the trigger in a V8 4Runner when they were built or an Explorer back when. There is something about the extra noise and exhaust. Damn I am going to miss gasoline powered vehicles

 

Dang that is cheap by Michigan standards. My insurance full coverage in a 21 4R is nearly double that quote in the suburbs of Detroit with no tickets etal in over 20 years. Yeah at that price I’d get both

Not tall, just old lol. 4Runner bench is good for an hour. After that it hurts. Uncomfortable kids means irritable kids. I know his kids are small just thinking term.

Edit: The Tacoma backseat? At my age that is a strictly storage only area lol, i agree with you 100%

BTW Tandem Offroad actually began as a 240SX shop. They went offroading once and they ended up changing their business model lol.

 

@daedalus - any news on the trade? I’m curious why you even need the Sequoia with the LC you have. The 4R seems like a practical idea with one behemoth already in the stable…

 

I’ve pretty much decided to trade in the Sequoia. I agree, the 4R is probably the more practical option for my situation.

The dealer just told me the 4R is scheduled for processing today. Not even sure what that means. I guess that’s when they install port installed accessories?

The vehicle has been reserved for me. So unless something goes awry on trade in day, I’ll be moving forward with the trade.

 

This made me chuckle. There’s an inversely proportional relationship between the age of the passenger and the cargo space requirements.

I’d keep the Sequoia for now. You will miss the cargo space and the third row.

You mentioned that parking is tight. Bear in mind that the TRD Pro 4Runner may be taller than your Sequoia.

 

I will definitely miss the cargo space and third row. It’s incredible how much stuff we pack for the kiddos on road trips. I guess we’ll have to learn to pack more lightly. Or take the LC on road trips if we really need more space. However even the LC doesn’t come close to the massive interior space of the Sequoia.

 

Its very interesting that Limited has more pay load capacity than TRD Pro. Even with 3rd row seat my Limited has 1151lbs of carry capacity vs TRD Pro has 824lbs pay load capacity.
