Low mileage 4Runners

I see a fair number of posts about high mileage Runners but wondering about those that don't get driven a lot.
The reason why....I've had my eye on a 2022 Limited this past week. Looks amazing...came in to the dealer with 125 miles on the odometer. From what I could find online, it was previously a rental vehicle. Maybe it's just me but seems odd that a vehicle that's been in service for a year already would have so few miles. Maybe not...what do ya think?

 

Sounds like a dealer test drive vehicle rather than a rental. I was fortunate to find my 5 year old 2018 Limited with only 31,000 miles in May of 2022. I’ve got 36,000 now and it’s my everyday driver.

 

I believe the dealers could easily reset a vehicle odometer not yet in service or delivered.

I got my 2022 T4R with 3 miles only despite a PDI. Questioned my salesman. Was told it was reset before it was given to me.

Demos used by the Lot Managers end up with a lot of miles.

That 125 miles is questionable. Just my two cents

 

Dealers often did this dirty practice when "used" car prices were through the roof and could ask whatever they wanted because it was considered used. The dealer registers the vehicle and then resells it with low mileage and puts a ridiculous price tag on it. Buyer beware!!

 

That would be illegal. Doesn't matter if it hasn't been delivered or not. I don't know of any manufacturers that actually make it possible to do in the first place. I'm sure there's ways, but not easy ones, and definitely not legal ones.

 

Could be any number of reasons, especially depending on the rental company. It could have simply been a courtesy vehicle and not used that much or didn't fit their needs/wants, could have been wrecked an fixed (although I'm sure that would have shown up), maybe the dealership registered it as a rental vehicle to get the vehicle allocated to them faster by showing Toyota that the vehicle was already "sold." I wouldn't be concerned with the odometer reset suggestions.

 

I know some of the IT folks work from home since pandemic. When my wife used to go to work instead of she's taking the car i used to drop her with one 4runner and pick her with another 4runner so they keep running. Now the same story with school runs.

 

This is me but I have worked from home before the pandemic. I have had the 4Runner for 17 months now and have 8700 miles on it.

125 miles is very low. If it was a dealer test unit, it would not have been titled and sold as a new vehicle. They don't rest the odometer, that is illegal but instead, the new vehicle warranty starts at 125 miles so it would be valid until 36,125 miles or 36 months from the day you sign the papers.

Dealers did use the dirty practice of selling the vehicle to employees/friends and then buying it back and selling it as a used vehicle so they could charge what they wanted to to avoid issues with the manufacturers. This is unethical but unfortunately, not illegal.

The question to ask is whether it is new (never titled) or used. Seems like this was titled and therefore would fall under the second category. Now that the market is correcting itself, they may not be able to sell it over MSRP.

Edit- some manufacturers told dealers to quit the practice of selling vehicles then buying then back to sell them at higher prices. They have some leverage (i.e. reducing future allocations etc..). This does not make the practice illegal but disincentivizes them to be more unethical than normal.

Bought my PRO on Feb 17th, 2022. As of today, Nov 14th 2022, mine has “371” miles!

So yes its possible to have low mileage vehicles, esp when you have multiple vehicles to drive or ride.

 

Ours had 209 miles on it when we picked it up. The dealership drove it from a Chicago dealership to their dealership. Wonder if the guy/gal that drove it back to the dealership 'beat' it.

 

I have bought a 21 ORP new last summer and ordered it and only have 825 miles on it (crazy), but it is an extra vehicle I bought for fishing and towing my boat. I started working remote and caring for my parents more and have not driven it much. So there are odd balls like me plus I won't drive it in inclement weather of any sort.

I also have a 2005 Accord with 65k miles bought new and just don't drive much.

 

I've noticed at some of the local dealers here in GA they "rent" a vehicle out to get some miles on it, then sell it as "used" with 200 miles on it so they can mark it up like 10-15k over MSRP. Sneaky bastards.
