As the comedian, Dave Attell says “Who doesn’t love fireworks? Show me your hook hand.” Illegally lighting fireworks on the street this past Monday for Diwali. Not supposed to be more than 9 ft on private property … but decided to go full out and of course one went horizontal, burn make on wife’s hood but nothing visible on my 4Runner.

I used to be that guy in my old neighbourhood, and clearly being the quiet guy on this street doesn’t do me any favours. I’d like the city to at least fine this guy. I wanted to confront him right away, but my wife … rightly so, held me back till I calmed down. A rational conversation with someone being irrational never ends well. Going to get a quote for my wife’s hood to be painted, and chat with insurance company. Some companies have been known to sue folks as a profit strategy, I’m hoping my company is greedy like this.

Remember to call the city for damages to the asphalt. That is public property damages that have to get fixed by the city.

When I lived in Arizona I had a neighbor who ran their water so much it flooded down the street like 10+ houses down until it got to the drain. I talked to them and they said they will have it looked into. Nothing ever got done after several months I called the city. They said they can fine the guy because that is a violation. Yeah I don’t think that ever happened and I moved to the east to let Arizona go waste away their water.

Anyways sorry for the tangent. sorry that happened to you. I hope everything ends peacefully.

I don't know how angry I would be if I was in your situation. I hate fire works (except for the kids sparkling ones) in neighborhood areas for been bad for dogs, potential fire hazard to lawn, noise and worst for a car guy, damage to cars. I wonder if you could get a police report or something like that before you call insurance and get the claim from their home insurance. Never been in that situation so no idea about the process.

I don't know how many here celebrate Diwali but educate me, i thought diwali is celebrated with colorful decoration with some kind of powder in front of the house and make sweets. A peaceful celebration without nuisance to others.

Jesus. Intended to be harmless fun and let some steam off in a celebration and you guys make it seem he killed your dog. If there is damage, sure, show him the pics and ask him to take care of it. Short of that, life's too short to be worked up by fireworks that are more than 9 feet tall. Go enjoy life. Trust me, I'm 55. I have less time on this earth now that I've spent on it already.

Wow, that is rude as hell of them. I'm not sure where people living in neighborhoods like that got the idea that they were entitled to other people's peace and quiet.

These rules are made for a reason. There are open places to have fun but not in the neighborhood.

Lucky I take my kiddo to near by safe open space to enjoy fireworks. The kids in the neighborhood along with their families join too. We share food and have a good time until the kids have fun with fireworks.

Here's what happened near my house with idiots with fireworks this July. (this is not my neighborhood but mine is across the street towards right side of the pic)

It's not about using fireworks, as much as it is about being reckless around other people's property.

I enjoy fireworks a lot. But, I'd never set them off in a residential area like that.

Where would it be convenient for you then since it seems local laws only allow "on your property" as described in the initial post?

More to my point. How many of the above people would actually confront their neighbors while fireworks were being lit? The interwebs is full of attorneys, tough guys and gives them the ability to be an internet enforcer, but in real life? Not so much. My overriding point is everyone lighten up. I lived through the 1970's in the hey day of LEGAL fireworks and no one died.

I guess if one doesn't have enough property to safely ignite fireworks, then they just don't ignite fireworks. Seems pretty simple to me.

I would also love to see in the "local laws" you are referring to where it says it is okay to ignite fireworks of that size in the street, or in a residential area even.

And, what difference does it make whether someone confronts their neighbor or not? Or, calls the authorities? Or, bitches about them on the internet, for that matter? Nobody's being a tough guy here.

This sort of thing is why we love living in the country on our almost 500 acres! We practice 'human essentials' as we feel. Hunting, target shooting, fishing, and even sometimes fireworks! With it being Fall and all the dry weather we've had, it's not so much about wanting to do something, it's about responsibly doing things. The piles of dry leaves and other organic combustibles would mandate responsibility. Very little confrontation living out in the sticks, like it that way. The fireworks in town seem..... well, not right when you consider it may cause damage, as in this case. Carry on!

Yes he said on their private property. Being on the street is public property. They also said local laws limit to 9 ft. I am pretty sure all of those are going out 50-100 ft. In both width and height. So needless to say we aren’t saying have no fun but be reasonable at the same time.

Ditto. I came here to second what you posted. Granted I am not on 500 acres as that would be a bit much to maintain. I only have 2.5 but most all my neighbors around me have 10+. Yeah we have neighbors that shoot those high fireworks even though they aren’t supposed to. But we are rural so no one cares. People shooting guns all around us and again no one cares. We go fishing in our neighbors
pond catching bass and such. However, we use our brains. I know that a lot of people don’t have the freedoms that we have being on more land. But that is not my problem. That was a choice someone made to buy that house where people live on top of each other (no offense OP as I was living like that just over 1 year ago myself) and have no real backyard. They should also realize they need to operate within the limits of that property. Land = more freedoms and more responsibility.

Damage to wife’s car has few little spots here and there on her hood and front of roof, with the biggest on close her wipers (as shown in pic). After washing her car, hood definitely need to be repainted. Thankfully nothing I can clearly see on mine.

Local city and I have been back and forth with them initially stating they can’t do anything because they didn’t catch the person in the act. I said then I know who it is, I have video and photo evidence plus damage. After I posted to Instagram and emailed them the link they seem to have changed their mind on support. I will file a police report as well to help with cost covering as we have $500 deductible, so I’ll be damned if I’m paying that for something someone broke the law on.

People are permitted to get permits to do fireworks on larger properties, and I like fireworks. But it is illegal to have them on public property, regardless of size. Other folks down the street acted worse by having them in an intersection, blocking traffic.

Photos give a good indication, but nothing is like video. There were 3 young boys on an adjacent driveway (out of camera view) watching the display, they could’ve been burned. Damn lucky it came my way vs theirs.

Just my two cents. Wouldn’t it be a better idea to speak to the neighbors calmly, inform them of the damage, show them the damage and the video you have of them. Tell them you expect them to cover it.

then if they don’t accept and make their wrongs right proceed with this course of insurance, police etc?

Those people are idiots. I'm all about the live and let live, but those people are obviously of the mindset they are entitled to other's property. That burn damage on your car is a huge bummer.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume they aren't very neighborly in general which makes it more egregious.

    Yikes! That looks pretty bad!

Maybe, if the OP was good friends with this neighbor, I could see going this route.

Otherwise, if you try to handle things that way, and end up needing to take them to court later, they're going to ask why there's no police report. I think the OP is just playing it safe.

My experience is when people already like they don’t care, discussing anything with them comes across as me complaining, even when breaking laws. I want the behaviour changed for future years, meaning abiding existing laws. In recent years it has gotten a bit excessive celebrating Diwali with fireworks beyond the day permitted. Diwali, New Years Eve, Canada Day and Victoria Day are days legally permitted to have fireworks. Without a permit, it has to be on private property and no higher than 10 ft. Not permitted on sidewalks, streets, parks, school yards or other public areas. Fines are $250-350 to individuals or court imposed fines $500-5000 to property owners. So when I asked the city to get involved, I’m only asking them to uphold the laws that already exist.

We have a lot of Indian neighbors and they were setting off fireworks for Diwali. They weren't doing anything dangerous, but these were powerful explosives that were rattling the windows of my parents' house and scaring my dog.

I am Indian / British, and my family is very mixed. So my local community has to find another reason to push back on me other than culture or race, ha ha ha. Spoke to another neighbour who lives beside this guy, and he has some pit burn marks on his car.

I want to move to a more rural area. Told my wife we can get an additional Doberman if we do, so she’s thinking about it … lol. But really, be nice to have a big garage to work on 4Runner, lol.

Trust me, I’m not being nice … I stood and listened to my wife and didn’t freak out. I wanted to grab a 2x4 from the garage and hit the fireworks onto his porch. It would’ve been satisfying for all of 60s then an additional world of headache. Don’t mistake my restraint for kindness, I have no problem waiting multiple months or a couple of years to ensure karma. I like planning, lol.

The thing keeping me calm now is wife gave me her blessing for a new amp for my media room, Emotiva AX3, so been reworking speaker wire and bought 2 new speakers. She rewarded my restraint.

In Texas there is a difference in Criminal law and civil law. My neighbors have done the same which is a violation of criminal law. If they damaged my property I would have to sue them in civil court to recover damages.

Just confirming. You dont speed, you dont stop in the crosswalk at intersections, you come to a full stop while turning right on red, your lawn care is always at city requirement, your trees do not grow over the property line, you've never parked in a handicap space, etc. High and mighty be damned.
