My husband is contemplating trading in his Taco TRD for TRD Pro 4Runner. He's noticed a ton of TRD Pro's on the market. Why? People bought on impulse? Bad rid? Gas hog?
I have a 5th gen SR5 premium and love it!

Why just this morning I was down at the dealer (Michael's Toyota Bellevue) getting a free oil change and 7 Pros available. It appears that supply >> demand for whatever reason. Cost to buy, cost to run, ...

May be soon they realize its not worth the money? You can save the money for proper upgrades?

Or maybe even poor color choice? Just last Friday my wife saw a Lunar rock and she said that looks good. They soon we saw that Lime thing and ask her why not we trade your silver and buy that? She had one word "Ewwww..."..

    Edit-
She didn't like the color probably she is more of a strong character. She don't like cars / phone or anything with weak / cute character.

    BUT...!!

If TRD Pro come with a lift (even with non remote reservoir coils over like we have now), wider wheels (atleast wide as TRD Offroad wheels with 7.5in) and 285/70R17s, comes with good A/T tires like BFG KO2/ Goodyear Duratracs or even lesser priced Falken Wildpeaks if Toyota want to keep the cost low and Including spare tire (right now its a joke to have a different tire in spare), then TRD Pro is worth $52K price tag.

Just way overpriced...At MSRP, ok - but 10 to 15k over MSRP - no thanks. I would love to see car prices fall and fall....and fall. But stupidity breeds greed.

BTW...I miss my Taco. Had a '17 TRD OR.

    All 4Runners are gas-hogs.

Could be that it's the most expensive trim, and many PRO buyers don't actually off-road. So, when the economy sucks, they're the most likely to get rid of them. :notsure:

I was going to write something similar. It’s just not a good buy right now. It’s expensive for what you get, it’s super old tech, there are “better” more fuel efficient vehicles available cheaper, and with the economy where it is, people are keeping cars longer.

Well they're definitely gas hogs, as all 4Runners are, but probably no worse than the Tacoma.

I think a lot of people that have never owned one before simply liked the look, and got the Pro because it was the "best". Then after living with it for a little while, they realized that it wasn't what they were expecting or did not enjoy driving it.

It's also possible they bought them at MSRP before the madness started, and traded or sold them for a profit.

Personally, unless you have money to burn, I would go with the TRD Off-road with the Premium package. This has all the same off-road tech as the Pro, without the high(er) sticker price.

Pros aren't worth it at all, super inflated price for a badge. Never really understood why people buy them, buy a lower trim and put a better suspension than what comes on on it. Think it mostly is people's egos really.

I don't think they are overpriced at Msrp just with the mark ups I'd stay away from buying right now. Interest rates are climbing so its just not a good time to buy. Which is crazy when to think a few months ago the toyota lots were empty.

Tough crowd here with these opinions on the PRO. But ok, everybody has a taste and a budget. I think a lot of people buy these thinking they can do all the offroad stuff but reality sits in and with busy schedules and lives, folks just decide to move on and get something else. I think Toyota has figured out to create this segment of the PRO for certain customers and they make money on them. It is true though, if you are wanting to mod the heck out of these vehicles, don't go with the PRO. Go with a lesser model and move up with all the stuff.

For PRO haters - here is a little mod should put on your panels in the back. Have a good time!

It's the same thing with Rubicon buyers. They just spring for top model because maybe they like the wheels, or they just think they need to have the "best". I see a ton of bone stock Rubicons where I live, and I'm pretty sure they bought them just for the look, because there's zero off-roading here where one would need a Rubicon, and they're always spotless. It's possible that they bought them before realizing the lack of trails. A good number of them are also parked in the driveways of very expensive houses, which leads me to believe they're probably just a summer toy.

There's nothing wrong with that, I think one should be able to buy whatever they want. But one should not be made to think that they absolutely NEED to buy the top model if they want to go off-roading, because that's not true. (I suppose more of an argument could be made for the Rubicon, because it does come with some very nice 4WD hardware as compared to the lower models)

For some people spending 50 or 60K on a Pro or Rubicon is pocket change and done on a whim, for others that could be over a year's salary and a very significant investment.

For the people that bought them on a whim, maybe after a short while the initial thrill wears off when they realize that they can't live the Instagram lifestyle that may have influenced them to buy it in the first place, so they get bored with it and decide to move on to something else. Or maybe the trade-offs associated with a vehicle like this were just more than what they bargained for and they didn't want to live with it. It's been a while since I shopped Rubicon's, but the last time I did I noticed that there were a fairly large number of low mileage stock Rubicons available. I just assume that this was the reason for that.

For a community it's incredible how much shade gets thrown at the TRD Pro. I understand the opinions and that most folks feel the value isn't there but there is an argument to be made for getting the PRO. In my case living in CO I wanted something super capable off-road and weighed both the ORP and Pro. I also knew I wanted slight lift for clearance and bigger tires but didn't want to replace the whole suspension on a vehicle north of 45K. I personally didn't want to run the risk of having warranty issues with a stealership for having messed with the suspension. Had I bought an ORP would have replaced the whole suspension with ICON, Kings or Toytec. Can you get a better suspension than the Fox on the PRO, 100%. Do most folks need a better suspension, probably not. Having a TRD Pro enabled me to do a pre-collar Westcott lift on my fox suspension and immediately fit 285s. I also got a better sound system, dual climate, rubber floor mats and a useless roof basket as a cherry on top. An ORP with some minor upgrades available stock on the PRO would have cost me 47-48K and I paid 53K. For me not having to worry about a voided warranty and getting best available OEM suspension off the lot was worth the $6K. Its crazy to think this one dealership has 7 TRD Pros when a year a ago you couldn't find one within 500 miles of CO for MRSP.

I agree Mr Snuffleupagus also a fellow CO PRO runner. Everyone makes an exception to get what they want, whether that accessory package, customization, upgrade, etc.. I don’t want to speak for everyone but their are other brands like the 4runner that allow you to customize because we can and are passionate. I picked up a 2020 pro army green in July. I got it $2k less then the msrp with 14k miles on it. This is my 3rd 4runner. July 2020 I traded in a 2008 sequoia with a 180,000+ miles and got a great price for it and picked up, what i thought i wanted, a 2018 BMW X5 M series. Loved driving it but after 3 driver train issues, I traded it in at the BMW dealership for the 2020 trd pro that landed on the lot. They traded me with more $$$ than I paid for the BMW. Have I made mods to my PRO, yes. Eibach Shocks and 285 tires. If you are comparing a vehicle to vehicle measurement, i agree but I look at it as a total investment across not just what you buy but what you invest in. Dont get me wrong, my wife gives me shit but in the overall scheme of things, where you put your money, we all make justifications as long as you look at the totality where your money goes- retirement, family vacations, stocks, or 4runner etc.
All in all, could have I done better, maybe but i love 4Runners and have been off-roading numerous times since august.

On the plus side, you have ample supply, so you have choices. And possibly a little bargaining power if you go to a dealership that has a lot of them that they need to sell.

Yet every 4runner swaps over the pro grille, pro skid plate, black trd wheels onto sr5 & trdor 4runners.

Also the trd shocks aren't bad, they ride a lot better then the stock oem sr5 and trdor crap shocks. I know if I would of bought a pro I'd throw some 285s on it and be done.
