N. Nevada high desert ~5,000’ elevation, not super hot like Las Vegas because of the elevation. Today from the west coast heat wave it will be 98 with<10% humidity, usually 80s and 90s and ~10-15%. I have seen humidity as low as 7%, but usually around 10% with 40-50% at night. Housing is kinda high but not as bad as California and ZERO STATE income tax. If you don’t gamble like us, we enjoy inexpensive nights out at some very nice casino steak house restaurants & entertainment because of gamblers essentially pay the casino’s overhead and the dinners are priced to draw them in. Some snow in the winter but usually melts off in 24-48hrs, I have to bring out the snow shovel/ATV plow 2-3 times/yr(big driveway), barely sub freezing at night, 50s during the day. Santa left a new shovel for the wife under the tree…she was very excited….in a bad way, no sense of humor….but hey, Santa did have a bow on it.
Very low crime, many times local news has store security video of shoplifters at Walmart asking for tips.
During some summer days I have seen a 50 degree swing night to day, 90 - 40….natural night time AC. Right next to the Sierra Nevada range and MOST of ALL, zillions of BLM trails. We were meant to live here.

Edit: we usually have afternoon zephyr wind 10-15mph, sometimes gusts of 20-35mph, in storm season it can sometimes be quite a bit higher and pressure wash the house, we are also in earthquake country. Sometimes we get the smoke fallout of the California fires. Summer nights are calm and spectacular with the stars at this elevation.

One more edit: Because of the super low humidity you have to train yourself to drink a LOT of water, your sweat evaporating almost immediately cools you but you can become dehydrated and not realize it…..ask me how I know…

12 miles south of Carson City in the East Valley/Minden/Gardnerville area backing up to the Pinenut Mountains/BLM, 15 miles over the Kali border. Douglas County is very conservative if you care.
BTW we lived in the Bay Area for 40yrs before we left 6-1/2 yrs ago.
It has kinda become a Kali retirement community, 80% of my neighbors are recent Kali refugees. Housing (ridiculous)prices peaked earlier this year and are trending down now. I have ~$750K invested in this house and it was appraised at $1.5M at the peak, probably around 1.3 now and descending. I don’t care as the plan is living out our lives here.

 

Lot of great comments in this thread. Maybe not exactly within the forum rules? But thoughtful and measured nonetheless.

The economic issues are complex, but long story short is that the rich have been allowed to get even richer at the expense of everyone else. Typical working class jobs are both less secure and less able to sustain a family with a reasonable quality of life — even on two such incomes, let alone one.

Real wages for the lower tiers of American workers have been stagnant or dropped, while the top 1 percent (and especially the top 0.1 percent) have grown dramatically wealthier. We see this in the large increase in multiples of CEO pay relative to the average pay of their workers. We see it in the demise of labor unions and thus collective bargaining power. We see it in tax cuts that skew heavily to the benefit of those who need it the least.

Objectively, because of technological progress, food (even with recent inflation) consumes far less of an average paycheck than it did decades ago. But housing, healthcare and education have all become exorbitant.

PS — it’s easy to do so and seems intuitively right, but the main culprit on healthcare is not actually the insurance companies. No saints them, but they’re primarily passing along the prices charged by medical providers. This has been studied extensively, and the primary source of the problem there is obscene pricing by hospitals, specialists and drug companies. Again, a complex problem with many villains, but providers are the main issue.

 

Thanks. Suggest you look at how other wealthy nations deal with this issue. Health outcomes better, longevity higher, infant mortality lower, and yet per capita spending a fraction of what it is here. In most cases this result is due to the combination of universal coverage and government price caps on medical services. Some countries are stingy, resulting in long waits (not that we never have that problem) but the overall results are still better. MRIs cost $200 instead of $2000 but are still available to patients when needed. Providers don’t get rich there, unlike here. “Entrepreneurs” aren’t building palatial diagnostic centers designed to suck as much cash as possible out of patients, government and insurers. The goal is improved health outcomes, not profit. Completely different model that, IMO anyway, makes more sense both morally and economically.

 

I remember visiting Gardnerville many years ago while skiing or hiking in the Tahoe or Markleeville area. It’s a lovely area. The JT Basque restaurant was a kick, the picon punch too!
Those home prices must seem outrageous to most folks but they’re quite a bargain compared to many parts of high demand cities in CA. It’s great that you’re enjoying life there.

Life expectancy in the U.S. is up 10%, infant survival rates have increased 71%, the food supply per person is up 21%. Globally, things have improved out of sight: in the early 1970’s half the world’s population lived in extreme poverty, now only 10% do. The number of illiterate people has dropped by more than 50%, while the number of people worldwide who live in a democracy grew from 32% to almost 56%

Prentice believes technological progress is the reason these some things have improved.

Agreed. I grew up in Gulfport. just about a mile from the beach. generally great weather, and a nice mix of people between locals, military,NASA and other industry bringing people in. Im in north central Florida now....thinking of maybe getting back to the MS coast when I retire.
