This MOD is about 4runner 5th Gen indash Tweeter speaker repalcement technique to improve your sound quality . Toyota added worse speakers in 4runner. Before replacing, I recommend replacing these front tweeters first and if you are not satisfied with the sound quality, then spend money and replace the rest of them .

A thread like this ran some time back. Quite a few members replaced their dash speakers with the Subaru Kickers, including me. I am quite satisfied with the results. Many others, however, chose a different route with a 3-way similarly sized speaker that they said sounds much better, but requires some fabrication of the mounting bracket. I chose plug and play like the OP.

I replaced with Infinity Reference speakers and it was an awesome upgrade.

    Mounting bracket fab was easy.

Did you also switched out the rest of the speakers on the 4Runner or you only switched out the dash tweeters?

    Just the dash speakers.

After a slight adjustment to the balance (from the head unit), everything sounded great.

I'm not some crazy audiophile so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Do the factory tweeters have a built in bass blocker on the adapter plug? The little black capacitor? If I reuse these from another set of Tacoma tweeters I had will I need a bass blocker or is it built in?

I did the infinity reference dash mod, and then added the infinity reference 6x9 component woofers to front doors for excellent bass, and then I added an Alpine Power pack behind the head unit for more juice and now I'm done/happy

    @Jessejessej,

Do you have a write up on the AlpinePower pack modification?
Difficulty & step by step installation for one that may be interested ?

I didn't put together a formal writeup but I did have a reddit thread with part numbers and tips for installation. With the plug and play harnesses it wasn't bad. My biggest issue was troubleshooting the remote wire to power the amp.

    Tinted fronts, blacked out overlays.
Changing just the tweeters make that much of a difference?

I haven’t done it in the 4Runner yet, but I did switch them briefly in my taco, and yes big difference. So much that when I let my wife listen she complained about the her car at the time so I switched them back in the taco and into her car.

I did the 3.5 infinity speakers a while back along with changing out the front door speakers. The 3.5 give a much fuller sound. I purchased extra speaker brackets just incase I ever needed to go back to stock due to blown speakers or whatever. I first tried the subaru kicker tweeters but wanted more mid range.I gave the subaru tweeters to my brother in law who has a tacoma.
Part Number Part Name Price Quantity Total
    86161-35040 Radio Speaker Bracket $7.94 1 $7.94
    86161-35030 Radio Speaker Bracket $8.18 1 $8.18

Edit: Never mind. Just realized I already commented in this post already and basically said the same thing.

3.5 infinity speakers were an awesome upgrade, IMO.

Easy to do. The bracket mod was a little daunting at first thought but it didn't end up being bad at all.

After playing around with levels on the stock head unit a little, I was happy replacing the dash speakers alone. I didn't feel the need to tackle door speakers........although I'm sure I'd really like the upgrade.

I definitely recommend doing the Infinity 3.5's first and then making a decision afterwards whether to continue down the speaker replacement road.

Not trying to rain on anyone’s parade here.

The infinity speakers are 3-4 times better sound quality than the Subaru tweets.
I tried the Subaru tweets, and the were worse that the OEM’s. They were very “tinny”!
They were in my TRDOPR for maximum of 5 minutes and …. Gone. :boom:

That's ok. I had my internet umbrella :crapstorm:out as soon as I posted the links. I researched all of the Infinity 3.5 information prior to ordering the Kicker tweeters, and for what I use my audio system for, the improvement and ease of installation was more than I wanted.

I figured this would be pointed out within moments of the OP asking. :llama:

I'm putting a dedicated tweeter in my dash, and a true midrange in the front doors. And running them with a Rockford Fosgate amp.
I may do an install thread if I see enough interest.

Did the Subaru / Kicker in dash speaker upgrade today. I have to say it is a very nice upgrade / mod. You can hear actually hear the Highs and good Bass. If you don’t want or need spend the coin on replacing all your speakers yet, for less than $110 it’ll make the 4runner sound system sound waaay better. Best of all it’s all Plug & Play.
