I am looking at a 2008 Limited V6. I know you all are more knowledgeable about 4Runners than I am, so what would you say it is worth if everything checks out. Asking $14,900

    Specs

    2008 Limited Black/Grey Leather
    Carfax says 1 owner.
    100,869
No Toyota Service record for 30/60/100k

Here are a few pictures. I have not check it out yet, person did say the car has some dents and it is "rough." He said the "lights" are on. Pictures show the lights. Thanks in advance.

Lights are on? Does that mean like "check engine" lights and the like? If that's the case I'd be taking it to a mechanic to check it out. Also, is this a one owner vehicle?

One owner. No engine light, just maintenance and tire sensor.

It is at a Buick dealership, probably trade in, and they think maintenance light is the engine light.

Oh so the dealership thinks the maintenance light is a check engine? That's good leverage to get the price down. Value of that 4Runner in that condition is around 13,500 so you should be able to talk them down a little, especially with that light on. As far as the tire sensor, if the tires are inflated then its just a matter of replacing a sensor, about 100 bucks with sensor and dismount/remount of the tire.

He said there are some body "blemishes" so I can check out what that means. Will update later on today.

    Thank you!

if its the abs light that's a big repair, on these trucks the master cylinder, brake booster, and ABS system pump is all built into one unit. the dealer charges $2500 for it but you can buy aftermarket ones for around $500. if it fails you lose your brakes.

those leather seats are just plain nasty and will soon be coming apart on you so I would pass on it if I were you.

around here there are 07-08 4runners with 115k miles selling from $12k-$15k with no accidents in "very" clean condition inside and out.

keep looking and you will find one in much better condition for less money with just a few more miles or maybe even less.

pass on it, those seats are just nasty and will be coming apart on you within a year

if the lights are for the ABS or brakes, these trucks the brake master cylinder, brake booster, and ABS system with brake pressure pump is all made into one unit and to replace it costs $2500 for the part from dealer or $500 for an aftermarket one. if it fails you lose all braking assist which means you pretty much lose your brakes.

around here you can buy 4runners in great condition inside and out with no accidents for anywhere from $12k-$15k with anywhere from 75k-115k miles from $10k-$12k with anywhere from 125k-150k miles

I wonder if you have any documents that prove oil change to confirm millage....?

I found the leather seat pretty used for 100869 miles

Checked the car today. Rust on the frame, some surface but one spot had went into a hole on the frame and seemed to penetrating the layers of the steel of the frame.

The interior is rough. The alternator is charging at 13.7-13.9. Battery must have been disconnected, the "readiness" monitors are not set. Looks to have rust under the paint by the engine mount area on the subframe. Needs new tires.

Did a carfax, large missing mileage information from 18,000 to 100,000 so maybe it was definitely rolled back by the dealer or the owner who traded it in.

I am looking for preferably a facelift model with the V6 due to gas MPG. Anyone know of one in the North East NYC area, PM me.

The only reason I am skeptical of the 2005 and earlier model years are the head gasket issues people have had. It worries me to the point I have looked at 2006 models where they had the redesign.

What do you folks think? I have read a lot of threads about that on here and the possibility of putting 11k and then finding the head gasket is bad...

the head gasket issues were "only" with the 4.0 v6 engines in 03-04 and older years, not sure how far back but I think 00-02 years were also 4.0 v6 with the bad head gaskets, anything with a v8 from 03-09 is worry free and any v6 from 05-09 is worry free and they had the new head gaskets that didn't fail.

also, if I were you, I would avoid buying one with leather seats, they are a PITA and require constant maint and conditioning to baby them or they crack and fall apart like the one you were just looking at.

Really? I was reading in the head gasket thread on here that 2006 was the redesign.

I would like a V6 over the V8. Trying to save a little gas.

Hmph. So maybe 2005 models are not bad either.

ya, 05 was a redesign of the v8 over to vvti and to higher compression pistons to increase hp from 245 to 260hp and the v6 switched to using a better head gasket design so you don't have any head gasket worries as long as its an 05 or newer

this link tells you about everything that changed year by year on 4runners http://www.top4runners.com/runhist/runhist42003.html

my 2007 only averages 17.5 mpg so not sure how much better it is than the V8. I drive a bit aggressive though. My only concern with the V8 is that it has a timing belt whereas my V6 has a timing chain.

well I have the 3.4 now in my taco so I already have that darn timing belt/water pump kit to do every 100k miles, for me a v8 is just the same routine 100k maint stuff as I have now

well I live in louisiana and there were around 30 of the v6 ones for sale with between 100k-150k miles but I only found 4 with a v8, 2 were 350 miles away in Alabama (both with 115k miles) and the other 2 were 300 miles away in Houston tx (115k & 155k miles)

I paid a guy $100 to drive me 330 miles to buy the 155k miles one in texas because it was fully loaded sport model so if you want the v8 you might have to be willing to travel and widen the distance on your search

this looks like a nice one to check out if you just want a v6 https://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/cto/6101242458.html

Thank you. That car is a fake. It has been listed many times. I check it, it was a decent price.

oh well, that's the bad thing with craigs list

I mainly rely on cargurus.com and cars.com, both have the option to send you email or text alerts when new ads pop up or ads get updated with price drops, auto trader isn't bad either but that one doesn't send you alerts

Four wheel would be best. I'd like the V6 due to the timing belt change on the V8. I would be doing the belt change myself anyway but would like to avoid it if I could.

I know how you feel, but when you think about it, its pretty much a once in a lifetime thing to do, the average person drives 10k miles a year so once every ten years you do it. other then you know you will have to do it when you buy it (since almost nobody brings it in at 90-100k when its out of warranty to have it done) so its extra BS to deal with but the power is worth it and to be honest if you are driving in snow that's just like towing so you should have that v8 power to push through small snow drifts if needed. im averaging 19mpg with mine and while im not a lead foot im not taking it easy at all

I just bought the kit for mine, its only $355 from ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/120805004131?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

    Searching for 4th Gen 4Runner

I'm in the boat of the non-average person, but it's because I have six kids and have helped them purchase and sell over 15 vehicles in the past 10 years as they have migrated from getting their first vehicle to being on their own. We've done the timing belt/water pump routine on a BMW i6, a couple of Toyota 3.4's, a Subaru 2.5 boxer, and a transverse mounted Volvo 2.5t. That said, I'm tickled as punch that I'll never have to worry about the direct gear-driven timing in my 7.3L diesel (nope, not even a chain in that 7.3... just direct gears!). Still, it's not a bad job on any of them.

In terms of your experience with fuel economy, I'll have to keep that in mind as I search for a '06-'07 for my daughter's first vehicle. We don't really need the 4WD here in Birmingham, and I would prefer her have the slight economy advantage of the 2WD V6 combo. That said, though, if we end up with the "perfect" opportunity which has the V8 instead of the V6, I just might consider that a viable option after all.
