I really enjoy intellectual discussion, especially pertaining to odd subjects. Mostly, I'd like this thread to pertain to scientific (And please don't take this in the literal definition of science, in that "Science is everything," but leave it at the colloquialism of "science," meaning math, biology, physics, engineering, etc.) studies, advancements, etc. I'd like to keep it clear of politics, religion, and any other immediately controversial subjects. While scientific studies and advancements can be controversial, I'd like no holding back on the postings/discussions, but as soon as you feel it crossing your political/religious beliefs, I'd like you to keep your offended and/or combative comments relating to the previous two to yourselves.

I watch a lot of VSauce on YouTube; love reading articles done on research done at universities; and really, anything else related. The only reason I'm posting this here, is because I like hearing (somewhat censored, lol) opinions from people closer in interests to me, rather than that of some random guy from Saudi Arabia who believes fish are the reason that volcanoes erupt (or something on the lines of that).

    Post 'em up!

Clearly none of us are intelligent enough to contribute to the discussion of intellectualism

"intellectual" is a subjective term... it really only requires that it makes one think, though...

Did you guys see that the US Navy is working on a way to convert salt water into power? I work in a biofuels laboratory, so when things like this come up it's usually dismissed pretty quickly as being cost prohibitive, but considering how many boats the Navy has, it could be a huge fuel savings when they are searching for lost aircraft and such.

actually, there was a guy who successfully made a saltwater powered engine. I'll try to dig up the video and post it. shit works!

found it...That's right, I forgot. So the guy was trying to come up with a cure for cancer and stumbled upon this.

That is nuts! Wonder how much energy is required to make the radio waves.

That's pretty cool. I wonder what it realistically would cost to build a a large number of them that can create enough power for a big ship. Considering a crab fishing boat burns a couple million dollars of diesel a year, guys like that could really benefit from a saltwater engine.

Wow, that's impressive! I knew someone who died from pancreatic cancer so this really hit home for me. It happens so fast, he was diagnosed with it in December, and died the following April. An early detection method might have saved his life.

Yeah I think maybe this is the reason why it hasn't gone further...that and what it would do to the oil industry if it went mainstream. But there's also a number of things I see as being hurdles for this. One would be the power supply needed in order to power a radio frequency generator big enough to ignite the volume of water needed to produce the power enough to thrust a few hundred tons of mass through the water. You'll notice that the generator was quite large in comparison to the volume of water being ignited. Multiply that many times over and that's a big ass generator.

also, if we're talking radio waves, then we're talking government regulations...and that's a whole other can of worms that would delay this even further.

What are everyone else's views on the viability of this coming to market?

And with a fuel tank, add in a pump to suck in the water?

I saw him on The Colbert Report several months ago, and he impressed quite a few people. He said he thought of that idea in middle school in Biology class, and has been perfecting it ever since.

My envision for the system would be a small holding tank for salt water, enough that you would have fuel if you were out of the water for X amount of time. But when you are in the water, a pump would feed the engine directly from the water. This would reduce literally tons of weight in fuel you don't need to haul around. For a cargo ship, that could also mean a greater payload. It sounds better and better the more I think about it. Hopefully the Navy engineers can make something of this idea.

Any idea on how one could seal those Stator magnets on the hub? And the DC Motor?

But in what configuration is the stack?! They need to elaborate! That's like a cop telling you you're under arrest, but not what for!

It could be like... A line of cops... Cause like, if you think about it, if you like turn your head 90 degrees, a line of people turns into a stack of people. It's like perception man. Inception perception conception retention.
