Am I the only TRD PRO owner who wishes they could see their FOX suspension a lot easier?

Let's face it, much of what we pay for as TRD Pro owners is a badge and FOX suspension.

Of all of the TRD Pro vehicles, I feel like the 4Runner hides the suspension the most. The rears come with awesome-looking external reservoirs that you cannot see. On the Tacoma you get to see them from the wheel well without breaking your neck.

Even on the fronts, you have to turn the wheel hard left/right to see your front FOX suspension.

End rant. I just like to see my money....

Take a stock suspension for a ride...and then compare it with yours and you might start seeing the difference. Look at things like stopping hard or going thru a bump and see if you can feel it. If not, then I am afraid the Pro wasn't the way to go.

 

Do you wear one of those 80s Swatches with the clear body so you can see the tiny gears ticking away?

I personally like understated stuff, things that are only slightly off from normal that only a connoisseur would notice and appreciate. An example that I own would be my 4R as all the accoutrements are not obvious. A soccer mom in her stock SR5 might pass me and see just another plain 4R, but an enthusiast will note a small lift, 95% concealed winch, paint accents that aren't factory, etc.

That to me that's actually the coolest thing about the PRO - it mostly blends in, but to people in the know, it's bad ass truck with some features hiding in plain sight. Kind of like a sleeper muscle car only without the performance!

 

IMO TRD Pro Fox suspension are good for a factory option but nothing big. It does an ok job as a factory option. Since they are on basic / entry level 2.5 category one cannot expect both comfort and shock control at the same time.
If you compare something like XREAS, they are very comfortable on road but would not be good to be used on medium speed off-pavement runs.
Probably why Toyota uses Tokico shocks for most of the trims for the benefit of less maintenance, comparatively longer life, soft ride onroad and still good off pavement as long as not driving fast.
When someone experience good shocks like Ironman FCP or ELKA 2.5DC will feel the difference how they give both comfort and better control. I bet it would be same for suspension like OME BP51/ Fox2.5DSC/ King 2.5A, etc..

 

Take the suspension off and just zip tie it to the roof rack.

This thread illustrates yet another reason I’m glad I own a lowly SR5.

 

I am happy to have a Pro, but I haven't even looked at the shocks in 15 months of ownership. I have no idea what they look like or most importantly - I don't care what they look like!

 

Mm, nope, .. i don't purchase shit, for others. Couldn't care less, also why i didnt buy a pro. Seems many pro owners only care about the badge on the side (that real wheelers giggle at just fyi mate) or the suspension that most swap out anyway.
Dunno man, take pictures and show people your suspension i guess. Those that you find really care, dont be friends with, because they are tools.

Edit- then again, if you bought something with a badge, and some "suspension coolness" and want to flaunt it,... maybe think about your own self look. Just me.

Sounds like you dont really use it as intended either. Then why did you pay for a pro, may i ask? "Happy to have a pro".

I just didn't feel like going though the time / opportunity cost of researching the mods, who would install the mods (I have no mechanical skills), the cost of the mods, etc. Admittingly a basic 4R would have been plenty adequate for me and probably 90% of the all 4R owners. I mountain bike, ski and hunt, but living in Maryland not a lot places to randomly 4WD like there are out west. I wanted it, I could afford it, so I bought it. I am self employed and could write off 40% off the cost which made the $10,000 more than a ORP tolerable. I rationalized that a ORP would be $10,000 less, but throw in new tires, rims and modest suspension and it would be close to $5,000.

I was 59 when I bought it and wanted a functional, capable and good looking vehicle to ride off into the sunsets for the next dozen years! I am headed out your way for a 30 day mountain bike trip late September in Grand Junction and Moab. I should finally have some 4WD opportunities out there. I had 77 Ford Bronco in my 20's and a 06 LJ Rubicon in my mid 40's. I have no qualms with the Pro and could care a less about the badges. Most people around here don't even know the differences in a Pro, OR or SR5.

By the way, I really hate the Pro roof rack which really is just a beacon to identify it as a Pro. I disliked it before I bought it and 15 months later I still dislike it - just too lazy to take it off!

 

Awesome my guy. I hit moab 4 times a year, for about 11 years in my 20s. While the scenery is still rad, the place has changed. I dont like it as much at all, vs back in the day. And appreciate ya being cool, i ment zero dick headedness. I just feel like people buy shit, to impress, vs what they really really want, or need. And the pro community is odd. Most change the suspension off rip (then why get a pro???" Or, are all about flipping it later, or keeping value. That isnt me. I am gonna keep my 18 OR forever,... I'll never ever sale it. Ever. Man your trip sounds amazing. Have a ball my guy. That is what its all about brother. Have a blast.

Buy a Jeep. Lots of room to get in there and clean, polish and stroke your tubes... suspension.

Brother there's alot of haters out there. Personally I got the pro because I got a good price on it!! I am changing out the suspension to I con this week, but like on my Jeep jk Krawler I do like seeing the ciolover shocks. So I agree with you. To each his own

I got a Pro because I’m a 68 y/o geezer that likes to off road periodically out here in NM. It’s the second 4Runner I’ve owned. Could give three sh*ts about impressing anyone but want what I want to do my driving.
It’s hard to find exactly what you want in a vehicle these days and life is too short to wait around for most anything.

I hang around this forum because I learn a lot from most of the folks here. It’s generally a bunch of good, non-judgmental folks who share a common interest.

 

68 here and geezing right along with you, also in NM. Back when I got my 4R in 2019, I'd never owned one prior, and didn't even know what a Pro was. I simply thought the Off Road was way more than I would ever use, but wanted the capability anyway. I guess if I'd known what a Pro offered, I might have been tempted, but ignorance was bliss in my case.

My ‘21 Pro had just been traded in at Toyota of Santa Fe last week and I snagged it while my wife was out to lunch and I was left to my own devices for a couple hours. Not many hangin*around showroom floors these days. This one had not even hit the dealer’s books and was on the back lot waiting to be serviced when I found it.

I was going to mod my ‘17 but before doing so, thought I’d stop at the dealership to see if they had anything newer as my platform so her I am.

Frankly, the stock Pro will do most anything i want. Not looking to impress anyone else with any badges, etc.

The only people that would be impressed that you have Fox suspension is other Toyota nerds that already know you have Fox suspension because they've ID'd your 4Runner as a Pro already.

 

Or they'll just think you're into riding dirt bikes.
