My plan is to have work pay for my 4R then retire it and let the fun begin. I just ordered a Grey TRD Offroad premium with the KDSS. Just a little anxious here! I used to run the Rubicon in a CJ2A then a 78 Blazer. Life has since gotten in the way but want a track back.

Another hello from Washington!. Have been looking at a new vehicle for my wife...(we have a 2010 Camry with an MT and a 2016 Tacoma Sport) She wants to sit higher (she loves the Taco) and thought that a RAV4 would be the ticket...The test-drive proved to be a big disappointment (she liked the Camry better) Knowing how she likes the Taco- I arranged to have T4R waiting. After going about a half block down the street it was nothing but smiles. (The sales rep was flummoxed). I keep hearing that the 2018 Runner might have the same power train as my Taco. Question - Should I wait an buy a 2018? Thanks, Clay aka K7CR Auburn, Wa.

I have two friends that have 2016 Taco's each with an AT (Automatic) . - They both have griped about the fact that the AT is shifting (a lot) looking for mileage. My MT (Manual) leaves the driving to me and I love the truck...have 28,000 on it would do it again. Too back the Runner is an automatic only - My wife is bummed as we have always driven manuals (took is 4 months to get the Camry with one) Clay

This. If it does have the same power train as the Taco don't wait. The Taco power train with the added weight of the 4Runner would be a terrible match. There has been little to no info on the 18' 4Runner released.

I don't understand - The Taco's new 3.5 Liter Engine produces 278 HP....That's a bit more than the 4.0 in the T4R - Torque is close. The big difference is the 3.5 develops its power and torgue at a higher RPM. Toyota is using this 3.5 in a number of its new vehicles. It appears they are standardizing on this engine. Certain better mileage would be in everyones best interest. My Taco gets better mileage than my 2010 the 4-banger. Certainly the reasons why Toyota dropped the 4.0 in the Tacoma apply here. I've only test driven one and on paper the 3.5 looks fine, but in the real world it just doesn't feel right in my opinion. Ask all the ex-3rd gen taco owners on here or go take a look in the 3rd gen taco forums on TW.

When I walked away from my 2016 taco test drive and the salesmen asked me what I thought, I said; "It just doesn't feel like a truck engine". He said "yeah a lot of people are saying that after test driving these"

I hear what you are saying. You expect a truck engine to have a ton of torque at low RPM's...Perhaps like a Diesel, or an old push-rod machine that topped out at 3600 rpm. This is NOT one of those. Like a lot of engines today, this thing develops all of it's power at the high end. If you hold the accelerator in a fixed position and watch the tach as it winds up you will notice two distinct bursts of power between 3500 and 6000. This is not a linear progression and not something you'd expect in a truck but rather in a performance car that's turbo-charged. With that being said - this is why having a manual with this plant makes all the difference in the world. Frankly, once you learn how to make use of it's 'hockey-stick power curve, it's a lot of fun to play with. The Automatics in the new Taco's are computer controlled (not just throttle position and vacuum) and as such they are making decisions that are disliked by some...But is what happens when you hand over these decisions to a computer. Many of us grew up firmly believing that displacment is king. The world is changing. Too bad the Runner is no longer available with a manual. My wife, who loves a manual, would be elated if it did. Clay

I test drove a 2016 taco just before I signed the papers on my 4runner, just to make sure I was making the right decision. I get that it makes its power up high but I don't want to have to wind this thing up on a trail just to hit the power, that and the shifting was atrocious. I would agree that we used to think that displacement was king however I used to have a GM product with a 2.8 that made no power, Porsche also had a 2.8 that make like 300+. I learned early that displacement was not the end all measure of an engine, and that was 20 (oh god I'm getting old) years ago.
