2019 horrible gas mileage

If you went from NY to Ohio you went through a ton of hills and mountains, so yeah that MPG took a Stone Cold Stunner.

 

If it’s a high compression engine and would benefit the best from 91 octane to make it run at peak performance why wouldn’t they state only 91+ octane like other vehicles then though…I only use 87 and I feel like the thing drives as it should, being a 270hp 278tq 4600LB blob with a 5 speed.

 

Really weren’t any hills and most certainly no mountains, this was a flat stretch on the 90 west for most of the trip. Not southern OH. Or southern PA where the hills start.

Higher elevation should require lower octane ratings to get the same performance at lower elevation with higher octane gas.

Ancient is good! Loved the 2000-2010 era of vehicles and before that. One thing Toyota is going right is making there vehicles LOOK BETTER as time goes on, not like smooshed POS like the grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Tahoe, expedition, explorer and such. Love the 5th gen look, the more boxy tundra & sequoia as well for 2023.

 

I think the 4Runner and Taco used different versions of the 4.0. Sorry I don't know the designations, I don't speak nerd (LMAO)

I think the 4.0 in the Taco made 230some-odd HP, the 2010+ 4Rs make 270-ish. Supposedly the version in the Tacoma made more low-end torque. I don't know though, I've never seen that verified anywhere. I think the version in the 4Runner has essentially been unchanged since 2010.

 

Correct. They're both the 1GR-FE. The 5th gen 4Runner got dual VVT-I, But for whatever reason the Taco kept the single VVTI version up until the 3rd gen. Maybe something to do with being made here and Mexico VS made in Japan.

 

I think that Toyota has proven hybrid designs they could use with success on future 4Runners. I think that that is the most likely way to save 4Runners from totally replacement in the future. Its that or a fully electric 4Runner of some type similar to a Rivian.

 

It sounds like a hybrid, or plug in hybrid will be an option. The base motor is supposed to be a turbo 4 that looks like it could be a huge improvement over the current V6 as far as power and efficiency.

That's good to hear! I've been starting to consider a tune. I run 285's and 295's, and the 295's are really pushing it without a regear. I have to keep it in S4 usually, otherwise it downshifts nonstop.
