100% agree. Was it running or just the electronics turned on?

Yeah, sounds more like a bug (a big one), not a feature.

I can say that mine does not shut off. I have a 21 ORP that does not get driven much and I store in winter (only have 700 miles)

I was advised to start it up and let it run 20-30 min every few weeks just to keep fluids moving. So I do that and it sits in the garage. It has run well over 20 min and never shut off

That was actually the deciding factor in us buying our CRV over the Bronco sport. The Broncos have it. It's annoying AF! And doesn't help that much for economy.

Thank goodness my 4R's don't have it! (I turn-off as much tech as I can in my 2021 TRD ORP). My previous 2020 Outback had it and to disable it you had to go deep into the car feature menu (a couple of screens down - and it reset to enabled each time you turned the car off) - it was very, very annoying. Enough people must have complained to Subaru as they came out with a software update that move the disable ASS button to the main screen.

Mine shuts off after idling for a certain period of time but it’s definitely longer than 10 mins.

    Excerpt from the manual;

    ■ Automatic engine shut off feature
●The vehicle is equipped with a feature that automatically shuts off the engine when the shift lever is in P with the engine running for an extended period.
●The engine will automatically shut off after approximately 1 hour if it has been left running while the shift lever is in P.
●The timer for the automatic engine shut off feature will reset if the brake pedal is depressed or if the shift lever is in a position other than P.
●After the vehicle is parked, if the door is locked with the door lock switch (P. 113) from the inside or the mechanical key (P. 507) from the outside, the automatic engine shut off feature will be disabled. The timer for the auto- matic engine shut off feature will be re-enabled if the driver’s door is opened.

Did not know it either til it happened to me. I don’t usually leave the engine in idle for a long time except in a few occasions. One was waiting in the parking lot with AC on coz the kids were asleep while waiting for my wife to get some milk at the grocery store. Well we all know that she aint just come out that store with one item .

Second time was on deadlock traffic waiting for the authorities to clear out an accident.

Glad we don’t have that feature, on our rav4 there is a disable button at least.

My other vehicle, if I do a remote start, will shut itself off after 10 minutes. Perhaps that is what is happening here.

Here in New Jersey we have a law that prohibits idling — defined as when the engine is running but the vehicle is not moving for no more than 3 minutes. Drivers of passenger and commercial vehicles face a $250 fine for a first offense, $500 for a second offense, and $1,000 for third and subsequent violation.

That law is idiotic, and the guy who gets the third offense is also.

But the police, fire and Ems vehicles and public utility vehicles can idle all day I’ll bet. So you are not allowed to warm up your car technically in winter either?

    Technically your correct.

Here is the NJ statue summary:

Summary of N.J. Idling Requirements for Motor Vehicles N.J.A.C. 7:27-14,15

All vehicles may idle for up to three minutes with the following exceptions:
    • DIESEL only may idle for up to 15 consecutive minutes when the vehicle has been stopped for 3 or more hours and ONLY if the outside temperature is <25 degrees F
    • Buses may idle while actively discharging or picking up passengers for 15 consecutive minutes in a 60-minute period
    • No idling is allowed in a parking space with available and functioning electrification technology

Three-minute idling limit does NOT apply to:
    • Motor vehicles stopped in traffic
    • Motor vehicles whose primary power source is utilized in whole or in part for necessary and prescribed mechanical operations such as refrigeration units for perishable loads, hydraulic lifts, “cherry pickers”, or similar equipment
    • Motor vehicles waiting to be examined by state or federal motor vehicle inspectors or motor vehicles while being repaired
    • Vehicles that are actively performing emergency services, such as fire, police, snow removal, and utility vehicles
    • Operation of auxiliary or alternate power systems for cabin comfort
    • A motor vehicle with a sleeper berth, equipped with a 2007 or newer engine, or that has been retrofitted with a diesel particulate filter while the driver is resting or sleeping in the sleeper berth. Other idling is still prohibited.

I remember my only time in NJ I thought the guy at the gas station was going to have a cardiac arrest when I started pumping gas in my rental car I got in Philly. It was quite the stir. I am from MI and never heard of a law against pumping your own gas. I would imagine a lot of folks not from NJ make the same mistake

Exactly this.... I was not at all interested in a new car that stalled the engine at most stops by design. It's one of the reasons I bought "such an outdated vehicle" as brand new in '21. Love it!

My wife’s 2015 Acura TLX has it, and the first she had it year she got rear ended at an intersection while waiting at a red light. She saw the vehicle coming behind without any indication of it slowing down, and she put her foot down to get out of the way but car didn’t speed up in time due to the engine having to restart. Luckily she had enough momentum where the hit wasn’t as that hard so no injuries to her. She thinks it if wasn’t for the ASS she’d easily have avoided being hit. I think the system is dangerous for driver defence. Unfortunately at the time we thought it was more the specific car vs the way ASS works. Acura agreed to replace the car with a same spec’d dealer demo, and we were appeased by getting rid of the original car. Came to realize it’s the system. We disable it every time we start the car. Now that extended warrant is up we’ll look at permanently disabling it as dealer wouldn’t do it.

I wouldn’t even want someone else pumping my gas, more chance of them dinging your car in a sloppy manor. Of topping off to much and fucking up your emission components.

I can totally see that happening. Hope your wife is ok after that. I had some punk kid texting rear end me at a light with my Dad in the car. Dumbass. Luckily I was in left lane and could pull out a bit in left hand turn lane to minimize a bit.

After you mention this I see the start stop as a safety risk for sure. I am sure the greenies don’t care though since it saves fuel.

Safety risk, and unneeded wear and tear on the engine and starter I would assume.

My understanding is that there is a separate starter of some sort and separate battery for that. So while you may save some gas you’ll be buying an extra battery and starter someday also for the start stop.

So for the environment who knows maybe a break even. And hopefully we can get a broken back or otherwise getting rear ended

I believe if you ask a salesperson what’s all involved, they might give you a vague enough answer that might lead you to believe that.

At most, the starter and battery are beefed up somewhat, but you couldnt tell that by looking under the hood. Starter and battery look like regular day to day units.

My experience has been that most sales people don’t know squat. The folks on this forum and other model forums and mechanics know the most. Sadly most not all but most sales folks don’t know their models and specs they are intermediaries that run back to someone else to get answers and find out what they can or cannot sell a vehicle for.

There are good exceptions though like Toyota Jeff. This dude knows his stuff and makes a point to learn the differences in models/trims etc and demonstrate how things work. In my opinion this is what an old school salesperson should do. Toyota and his dealership should be thankful for him. He sells Toyotas by informing the rest of us. Call me crazy I am just a bit old school trapped in young man’s body

    So true!

Back in my late teens/early 20's I used to go to dealerships just to test drive cars for fun (yes, I was an asshole). I would sometimes play dumb about whatever I was trying to test drive to get the salesperson to let me drive it. It was so hard not to correct them sometimes when they didn't know wtf they were talking about. There were some exceptions, but not many.

I test drove a Kia Sportage a few years back and the sales guy told me that it drove and felt like a Lexus. I laughed my ass off in front of the kid. The interior felt and looked cheap, and while it drove nicely, there was no way it was on par with a Lexus.

Also, the sales guy I worked with when buying my 4runner had no clue what lift was on it or if it was a sr5 or sr5 premium. He was clueless. And it was a Toyota dealership I purchased from. He had to do a lot of "let me check with someone on that." :annoyed:

My wife’s VW Atlas has Auto-Start-Stop. The battery is nothing special. I have no idea about the starter. Carista would allow me to disable it permanently but she doesn’t want me to.☹️

My niece has a JL Wrangler with stop-start. It has two batteries, and oddly one is mounted on top of the other. The system has given her problems …
