What’s interesting to me is how we see some of this tech in a vehicle, and then a few years down the road the government makes things required.
And no company is going to spend money they don’t have to, but I am sure R & D is a necessity to any manufacturer. Even in the small plant I spent some time in, the in house chemist was always trying new things, revising old products. I find it hard to believe auto manufacturers wouldn’t be spending $$$$$$$$$ on safety and other R & D. They want their products to be more desirable than the others.

Fair is fair…this has been my experience also. We have a TSS equipped 2018 Highlander and the 2021 4runner, and I have yet to experience any unnecessary brake intervention. I recall two instances (one in each vehicle) of braking activation where it acted like a good buddy, and it seemed to work in concert with my reaction, but it was just a split second quicker than I was. When I let off the brake, it let go of the brake, telling me it correctly read the situation and stopped braking exactly when I would have, as to avoid an overdramatic and unnecessary “full stop”. The third instance, I got the beeps and BRAKE! warning, but the TSS did not autonomously brake, because I was already in process of dropping the anchors.

As of now, all sensors seem to be operating well. It may prevent an accident for me, but I dont trust it to save my life or prevent one. And rightly so…Toyota describes in the manual conditions where it may unnecessarily activate, or not activate when necessary.

My problem is that I’m forced to accept that the TSS system may be the cause of accident, as a result of unnecessary activation. I guess I dont really go to bed worrying about that, but it’s still a legit consideration.

I called my insurance guy for a quote on a 2020 Corolla. He quoted me the same price as my 2018 Highlander, which nearly cost twice as much. When I said it didnt make any sense and asked why, he said it was because of all the safety stuff that comes with the corolla that’s expensive to replace in an accident (keep in mind both had the same TSS). That should tell you something about the insurance game. You can’t win!

Exactly where I was going with my previous reply. Its a game. Always has been, but now its done with a shit ton of self preserving data and brilliant marketing. Marketing that engages you with a singular person or character to make you feel good about who you are doing business with. It helps ease the pain of reality.

Not to mention auto insurance is required in many states, meanwhile some of the states are no fault, so even when you don’t cause the shit, you pay for the shit then with a deductible and after with higher rates.

 

That’s New York, I don’t understand how my new 4 runner is cheaper insurance wise vs my 2001 Tahoe @ 201,000 miles.

No-fault means that your own insurance company pays your medical bills if you get hurt in an accident -- regardless of who was at fault for that accident. There are pros and cons, but it's a consumer protection because otherwise you might have to sue the other driver / insurer in order to get your hospital bills paid. Having your own insurer cover bills for your injuries is especially welcome if the other driver is underinsured or not insured at all. It's not a conspiracy. It's designed to protect drivers who are hurt in accidents.

Yes, it's also exploited by doctors and lawyers. Like I said, pros and cons. But fundamentally it's designed to make sure that people hurt in auto accidents get medical care, and get it without having to litigate or hassle with another driver or insurance company. It's well intended.

No fault probably does cause higher rates overall, primarily because more medical bills get paid. There's simply more insurance coverage for care, so people get more of it (both desperately needed care, and care that's not needed at all). That's why the medical profession likes it. It's also created a bit of a cottage industry for lawyers representing medical providers in disputes over reimbursements from insurers. I personally think it's better than the alternative -- indeed, I'd prefer this approach for all losses arising from auto accidents, including vehicle damage, and also would like to see the abolition of mandatory insurance. But pros and cons. There are reasonable arguments for other ways of doing it.

Well, as someone explained earlier in the thread, there's no EASY way to check the fluid level, but there IS a plug. Very similar to the diff fluid checking method. Biggest difference is that apparently the transmission must be at a specific temp, as read off the OBDII system. Essentially the same, though. Pull the level check plug out, at the right temp, and if you get a little dribble, you're in good shape. Exactly the same as a differential check. Pull the filler plug, and if it dribbles a little, you're GTG.

Heck, it was the same on my 87 pickup and 4Runner. Pull the tranny's filler plug, dribble = good. Only major change, besides the addition of the OBDII system, is the temperature requirement. Not a big difference, really. Same for the transfer case, and the differentials.

That's why I asked. It's possible, not likely, but possible, the mechanic who worked on it didn't fill something, or put enough in. Having said that, I failed to take the TSS system into account, not ever having dealt with it on any Toyota vehicle I've owned.
