I have a 2020 SR5 which I bought new and ever since the first day I have been unable to drive with the rear window down due to the exhaust exiting directly under the window. I had a piece of exhaust pipe bend on a 90 degree elbow. Cut off the existing exhaust right at the rearmost hanger and slipped the new elbow on there and I now have a side exhaust for les than $25 and about 3 hours of labor. We will see if that fixes the problem.

Had mine done at a muffler shop. $70.00. No egg stench. Experimented with various speeds and window heights.
    No stench.

I like that it’s black. I have given up keeping the chrome one clean. It came to me yellow and the truck had 6 miles on the odometer

That looks great! I love driving around with that back window open, so I play around with the re-routing idea. The only thing holding me back is the possibility of crushing it. I alreadry sunk into a bog/mud once, down to the frame lol. Im worried either, that or the rear pulling recovery would have bent the exhaust system bad.

Ive thought about side exit setup, but ending it above and to the inside of the bumper, but that might not clear gases out from under the vehicle.

The stock tailpipe seems like a crappy design altogether. I'm considering this as well. Aside from the rear window sucking in the exhaust, it blows right on my legs if I'm loading/unloading or working on something with the engine running.

I have found that it doesn't tend to get sucked in the back window if you have other windows open as well. But, that doesn't help with the other issues.

Should have taken photos while I was doing it. My bad. I used an air cutoff tool to make the cuts and do a final trim of the new pipeBC71A6B1-6EA9-4E3C-A036-D4F101FB05BE.jpg1CE84741-FAFB-4A99-94F7-5F0299BE0636.jpg4F1956A7-A561-4CCB-BC1F-AC81D86C4685.jpgBC71A6B1-6EA9-4E3C-A036-D4F101FB05BE.jpg BC71A6B1-6EA9-4E3C-A036-D4F101FB05BE.jpg 1CE84741-FAFB-4A99-94F7-5F0299BE0636.jpg 4F1956A7-A561-4CCB-BC1F-AC81D86C4685.jpg

Im wondering if the design that MagnaFlow is using on their Overland series exhaust would accomplish the same thing... Cut just after the down portion past the rear axle, and slightly offset to not blow hot air on the spare? I would think mixing the exhaust gasses with fresh (ish) air well prior to the rear bumper vice dumping out the side would work? This would also alleviate the chance of crushing when off-road ( or jumping really big curbs in the metro).

Can you replace the stock tail pipe with the tail pipe from the trd pro exhaust?

So you’re moving the tailpipe outlet about 6 inches to the right. You think that’s going to help? There’s a big swirling vortex of air behind these big flat-assed boxes. Look at how dust gets picked up and deposited on the hatch window. It’s not as if the exhaust is going to shoot straight out to the side and go away. Maybe if you’re creeping along it will help but if you’re driving at speed it’s going to get swirled up just like before.

If you want to spend $300 on a piece of pipe, sure. Might as well spend another $3-400 and get the whole TRD exhaust at that point. Which some like the sound and some dont. For less than $100, you can accomplish the same.

Agree with you to a point. The sooner you can get the exhaust mixed with fresh air, the less intrusive the smell will be. I'd like to see some sort of wind tunnel/ heat/ fumes model to show the difference between the 2 versions. Doubt its out there and I dont have enough money to pay someone to do it:D

Not my experience with my setup. I've been experimenting for two weeks now: all speeds (highway and city driving) with window totally open and everything in between. No stench. Perhaps the slight downturn helps??
I had read the article on Trail4Runner and anticipated improvement but have been surprised that I haven't smelled the exhaust at all.
    ???
I had considered the Magnaflow Overland setup but chose not to go that route thinking the fumes would be a problem during cold weather camping while sleeping in the back. My concern was that it would be like an exhaust leak.

"Done at a muffler shop" - did that involve the shop fashioning the elbow, cutting the stock exhaust pipe, welding or clamping on the new elbow, and notching that flange coming down under the frame rail for the $70?

I especially like how it turns down at the end.

Guy had a pre-bent pipe, cut OEM pipe near the hanger and welded it on. Yeah, he notched the plastic as well. I hit it with high temp matte black ceramic spray paint.

I haven't had any issues with exhaust coming in the vehicle that I'm aware of the only thing I'd want to reroute is the freaking trailer plug that they buried way up under there having to lay on the ground every time just to plug the trailer in is a massive pain in the ass

    TLDR result:
    It doesn’t work.

If you’re driving around with the hatch window open you’re still sucking some amount of exhaust into the cabin. Even though you don’t smell it.

On every post there will be naysayers with their opinions on workability but I do not care about their opinions, they are like assholes, everybody has one. Whether this exhaust pipe exit works to remove the egg smell from my 4Runner or not is immaterial. I like it and feel it’s effective.

Two of my pics make the bend look bulbous. The pipe is straight and the image created an optical illusion. FYI.

Hey ElectroBoy. What is TLDR? I'm quite interested in your information.
    Thanks.
