    Hello All,
I picked up my new 2022 4-runner a couple months ago. I had it on a fire road once where the back got pretty dirty/dusty. I went straight to the car wash and manually pressure washed the vehicle and it looked good. After driving a few days, I am still getting dirt accumulating on the rear window/rubber and bottom of the hatch. Is this a known issue with these or is there a dirt/dust collector somewhere that I am not aware of?

Mine gets dusty there just sitting in garage when I have the cover off. It’s attracts a lot more dust there than my old Explorer did. Have no idea why

In the aero phase of the design process they were likely more concerned with looks then MPG then not creating pressure in the cabin with the back window down. I imagine the least of their concerns was dust accumulation. All of that work was probably done enough sterile wind tunnel

This is the only vehicle that I've owned that when you have all of the windows down and the roads wet I actually get spray on the rear view mirror and all over the dash which is crazy

It's one of the terrible "charms" of the vehicle. It stays dirty even going through a car wash! Oh well.

Yes, it’s common when off roading to get so much dust that I cannot see out the back window. It’s especially a problem in the desert, where the dust is like talcum powder.

Part of the issue is that dirt gets into the hatch and accumulates at the bottom. The best way to get it out is to run a hose on the rear window (gently) and let the water flow through the drain holes and carry the dirt out with it. This was pointed out to me by @McSpazatron . It definitely helps.

But, the other thing, as pointed out already, is the way dirt and dust get sucked toward the hatch as you're driving. I especially don't recommend having the rear window open on dusty roads, unless you want it everywhere in the vehicle.

I agree with all above, my 3rd. gens. little wing above the back window did better at keeping the back clean.

Haha, yeah you do that once….

I left mine cracked open at night while camping, but forgot to roll it back up before hitting the gravel roads. That dust is the gift that keeps on giving…you can clean it, but your still finding it’s still around a year later lol.

Just to clarify… with the window closed  The same way the weather stripping allows dust through, water will slowly make it’s way through and rinse things out a little.

I also remove the handhold “cups” on the bottom of the hatch, and run very low pressure water over the bottom of the hatch on the inside. I’m just being anal, since I’ve heard of hatches rusting. It helps keep the drains clear.

    Fantastic looking 3rd gen.

I you look at the design of that spoiler, you can almost visualize how it diverts a blast of air down over the hatch. Maybe it keeps dust moving, and not stagnating long enough to get sucked in.

I wonder if adding similar spoiler on our spoiler would help. That way I can also have a spoiler on my spoiler…always wanted one of those:D

Every SUV we had has this issue. Back hatch/window will look dirty as hell while rest of it looks clean.

It's a truck... buy a prius and keep it on the pavement if you want a clean vehicle.

I see nothing wrong with having a clean 4runner.. Some of us actually enjoy caring for and keeping our vehicles clean.

The 4runner deserves the best of both worlds! We all know they clean up really nice when we need them to, and wear dust and mud like a boss ;)

Love the negative comments here. I was just wondering if I had something odd or not. Thanks for the info guys! I want this to be a mall crawler and off road truck. I have already taken it to the top of a mountain--radio towers on a stock offroad.

Pretty sure all these dirt dudes with the crap attitudes enjoy living in pig pens. That whole 'made for dirt so treat it like dirt' argument isn't even worthy of a response IMHO.

Not IN the truck, playa!!! Which is the real MF of the rear window dirt repository. Get that window coated with dirt, then drop it down to enjoy the clean fresh air, and you get the dirt vortex coming off the window and bumper coating every surface inside with grit, even if you are on a paved road at the time!

And I know dirty rear windows and interior grit coating!!!
