04 V8 Doug Thorley Header Install Issue - Codes P0154 & P0051

Ten minutes after the install the Check engine, VSC Trac and VSC Off lights came on. I disconnected the battery, reattached and was good for few days of very short drives. Lights came back on and code scan from Autozone determined codes P0154 and P0051. Any suggestions on what my next step should be? I just did the headers, everything else CAT wise is OEM with 55K miles.

Who installed the headers? Are they short or long tube?

Im currently experiencing the same issue after i had a shop install shorty DT headers. CEL, vsc off and vsc trac. any luck?

 

Hello - very similar issue here. After install of DT short tube headers, magnaflow high flow cats, and Doug Thorely y-pipe, showing CEL code p0051 (Bank 2, sensor 1 /passenger side upstream). Code indicates faulty heater control circuit in sensor, replaced sensor with KAX aftermarket unit, and same code - P0051.

Note, per the retailer (Burtman Industries) who sold me the components provided 4 CEL spacers - 1 each for both upstream and downstream sensors for both sides. They were only installed at the downstream locaitons. Could not use the spaces on the passenger side upstream due to space constraints, so we did not install spacers on either of the upstream locationis. Also, spacers on upstream locations are not ever recommended - only downstream locaitons are. However, after calling back Jason at Burtman Industries, he mentioned that running high-flow CATS with Short tube headers is almost equivalent to running long tube headers without cats. For his long tube customers, he states that these headers need spacers in all 4 locations (upstream and downstream, both sides) to avoid and CEL/codes.

So, he then recommended a low profile right angle spacer that will in fact fit on the passenger side. Tentatively, I could install this right angle on the upstream passenger side and see if it somehow tricks the sensor to not throw a code, but this does not really make sense for the purpose of the upstream sensor.

Any suggestions ? Were you able to resolve your issue ?

 

Also had very similar issue. 05 V8 with DT long tube headers, no cats, DT Y-pipe, BAM cat-back exhaust with 90-degree custom tip. Jason at Burtman Industries is...mostly correct. Blackout (I think) on T4R.org has a great write-up about this. Ultimate issue is that your ECU thinks your down stream sensors aren't reading right because the airflow going through right there isnt the same as having the regular low-flow stock cats. Upstream sensors need nothing, no spacers no anything. Do not touch them. Your down stream sensors are the only thing to ever touch. Pull up ebay and type in "O2 sensor mini catalytic converter" and search around. This is the exact one I bought. Your ECU needs to think the airflow is what would come out of a cat, so this tricks the sensor into producing the correct signal.
