The glass Toyota uses totally SUCKS 5 months old with 7K and the windshield needs to be replaced is just total bullshit!

That IS strange. Hmmm. I remember living in Denver and you had to keep your vehicle well waxed and use Rain-X regularly on the windshield. Denver, during the winter, uses sand on their roads instead of salt like the Midwest. Other western states use sand I believe. When Spring/Summer came, that sand would blow everywhere (unlike salt that would melt). In just a couple years your windshield and front fascia looked like it was hit with a sand blaster.

But 5 months and 7 thousand miles ??? I wonder if Toyota would warranty ?

Interesting side note on windshields: I'm insured with Safeco. Which is owned by Liberty Mutual. SafeLite auto glass is owned by Safeco. (guess that's how it got it's name LOL). If you're insured through Safeco, the Comprehensive part of your coverage includes ACV Comp - for windshields only. JFYI

Interesting about the heated windshield wiper. This is exactly how mine looks right near the bottom and if I recall cracked in the winter.

WOW!! I'm picking up my 2021 ORP this coming Friday. If it has heated wiper blades, I'll make sure I don't use the heat feature.

    Sad.

I remember 40+ years ago you only occasionally saw a cracked windshield. But there wasn't the volume of traffic we have today. Funny, you never seem to pick up a rock going off-road. Every one of mine was from a rock on the Interstate.

Can we add paint protection film to the outside of a windshield? Or is that also illegal? I don’t see how a cop would be able to tell since it is clear

I ordered some and waiting for delivery. It has to be less expensive than a new windshield.

    Interesting. Thanks for the link!

I had ClearPlex windshield protection film installed on my new 4Runner. It was a great decision.

Just replaced my windshield on my ‘22 with only 3,500 miles. I had a few other chips before the one that started just below the passenger side wiper and spread upward. With the new electronics I’m no longer able to have someone come to be for replacement, and the total bill was just shy of a grand for aftermarket glass due to a good portion of the cost being for recalibration. OEM glass would have been nearly double the cost. In Colorado my wife and I have to replace a windshield what seems like every year, so we have a $0 deductible on glass which has more than paid for itself.

6500 miles, 1 year old... and I have a corner to corner crack at the very bottom of the passenger side windshield. Can't even see it when driving, I didn't notice it until I was drying after a car wash. I have a dealer service appointment coming soon, I'll post here how much they try to get out of me for a replacement.

People drive around with cracked windshields in Montana?

I can tolerate a lot of things. But, when my windshield got cracked, it was replaced within a week.

I know I’ve told this story before but when I got my 2021 and called my insurance company (Amica) to get coverage I was told they now offer glass coverage. I asked how much it was and, while I can’t remember specifically, I was shocked how cheap it was. So shocked that I thought she meant monthly when she was quoting every 6 months. So cheap that I added it to both my 4Runner and my wife’s CRV. The CRV was a little more because the windshield is huge. There’s no deductible, and the claim doesn’t go against your other coverage. Within 4 months my wife took a rock to the windshield and Amica had Safelite replace it. The only thing it cost me was the shopping she did in the area within walking distance of the Safelite place and her lunch. If you don’t have glass coverage, you should consider calling about it. And if you have never shopped Amica, they are an excellent company.

I wanna know how the ShatterX does as well.
Although, I'll need a new windshield first as my current one has a nice fatty chip on the passenger side, and on my driver's side there's a lovely corner to corner crack just out of my driving view. Adds character, right?

If I’m on two lane highway I actually slow down to about 30mph when semis are approaching (if nobody is behind me). To avoid rock chips and pitting. These windshields get absolutely hammered. As others have said, it must be the angle of the glass. I’m on my third windshield in 4 years.

I don’t think it’s the angle at all.
My thoughts are still on the bean counters that say, make the glass thinner to save weight and increase profits.

And I also believe that the process of making w/s glass has severely deteriorated in the last 50 years.

Mainly, imo, due to the “cost vs. excessive profits” mentally of the corp. finger.

Curious how many guys have bug deflectors that have had stuff flying into their windows. I had one on but took it off. I used to drive a lifted Chevy Silverado and I replaced the windshield on that thing 3 times in 6 years and it had a bug deflector on it I took it off finally because it was getting brittle. I didn’t have an issue with the window after that.

The windshield silica treatment seems to be similar to that used for smartphone liquid screen protectors.

    Apparently there is some benefit.
Here’s a review and testing of smartphone screen protectors.

Oooh interesting. We got a couple anecdotal reports of “no bug deflector, no windshield damage”. This is where the forum gets fun, fellas!

I’ve always had but deflectors and I always get damage. Now I wanna take my bug deflector off and report back!

Thinner could make them more susceptible to cracks… but wouldn’t inherently make them more susceptible to chips or pitting???
