I think this 11mpg if hand calculated is due to a lift tires and non top tier fuel...not sure if the speedo is calibrated with the tires but yea these things guzzle gas when working so that the cost of some mods! 11 sounds pretty bad though that’s HD truck territory.

"Bells and whistles", "lifted with bigger tires" is pretty vague. OP, maybe if you listed the actual details of model, specific mods on the truck, you'd get more information.

For all we know, it could have 2000 lbs of skids, sliders, bumpers, winch, etc. that are included in "bells and whistles".

As others have stated more info would be nice, maybe the factory messed up and put the 5.7L V8 in? If so I will gladly trade my 2022 so you can have better MPG.

Nah, mine has that and I still get 13.4 loaded for an extended trip. He has to have a Limited on 35s or a fuel leak!

Lifted ORP with 295's here. 17+ HWY without the roof basket. But, at 80+ with the basket, 12-13. It's really dependant on speed.

agreed. limited is the only 4runner that has full time 4wd. Sr5, trd orp and pro are 2wd unless you switch to 4wd. 4wd mode consumes more gas $$$

Doesnt the 4 wheel drive only kick on when the rear wheels sense wheel slip on the limiteds or am I wrong on that.

There’s full time torque to both axles, with more to the rear by default, varies as needed, plus can be locked at 50/50 at the center diff.

That looks hot. Wish we could see the OPs rig. If the mileage is any indication, it’s probably pretty cool looking too!

Fuel leaks aren’t an issue anymore below 15mpg. Because the fuel pump is creating enough draw to keep a vacuum in the tank, sucking any leaking fuel right back in:D:p

Stock and drive like a sedated grandma, apparently.

4105 miles since last reset, using 89 octane..
    IMG_20220530_152948.jpg

Edit: I haven't reset the trip since I brought it home in Sept. 2021.

I reset mine by mistake at my first fill up, so at about 300 miles on the odo. Now with more than 15k miles it reports 17.3 mpg. I rarely get that in city driving, so it’s from the handful of long highway trips I’ve taken. On those I’ve often gotten 20 and prob averaged high 19s.

Only way I’d get your 21.1 average is if I drove almost exclusively at 50-60 mph without aggravating factors like big hills. I’ve had trips over 21 before, but the conditions were pretty ideal. And on my OEM touring tires.

My rotating weight is actually lower since I switched to AT tires, since I also switched to much smaller and lighter rims, but I suspect I’m still losing a fraction of a mpg given the more aggressive tread.

Wife and I each have a vehicle for DD'ing, plus a "good" one that stays in the garage for longer trips (it's now the 4R). Those miles are about 75% highway with back mountain roads through WV. We'll see what it looks like after hauling the boat ~200 miles next weekend.

Uh oh, say bye bye to that sweet 21.1 average

Impressive you’re getting that result so far in a hilly area. I imagine the usual speeds on such roads help a ton, as I think the aerodynamic hit at high speeds on the highway is a real mpg killer, but that’s still a great result.

2014 Neglected by the previous owners 2020 is an abused former rental... 2023 New I've been buying above my pay grade ☹️
I have not read any other replies. With my 2014 SR5 rear wheel drive, I get 23 miles per gallon. My 2018 prius, I regularly get over 60 miles per gallon over the whole tank. The RAV4s, 33 miles per gallon.

Your engine has been designed, and your computer has been programmed to accept 87 octane fuel. Do not put premium in it.

I buy OEM Toyota parts through the parts website provided by Toyota, I change the air filter every two to three oil changes, I change the oil every 5,000 miles and I clean my mass air flow sensor every 10,000 miles.

At 30,000 miles, the differential fluid should have been changed by now (if you tow things, you should have changed it more than once and, if you tow things, the transmission fluid should be changed now). I also check the air pressure in the tires every second tank of gas or monthly, whichever comes first. If the tires are hot, I add 5 lb of pressure over the door sticker. Tires get hot if they go over 5 miles on the freeway. I believe I'm putting 38 PSI, I always check the sticker, I never go by memory on that since I care for four different cars.

I also drive with my windows closed when I'm going over 40 mph. Roof racks can take away 2% to 5% on your gas mileage, there have been actual studies about that anyone contradicting that information needs to look at real educational studies as opposed to anecdotal ones.

Troubleshooting is extremely important. Getting a Bluetooth OBD-II with car scanner pro tells me that my fuel/air mixture is good.

If the oil has not been changed every 5,000 miles, I would even dare say that the PCV valve might be mucked up and cleaning or changing that might help as well ($4.74 buying a Toyota OEM denso made PCV valve on the website and having it delivered to a nearby Toyota dealer).

If you're still within the 36 month time frame, taking it to a dealer might be a good idea. If you bought this second hand, you can go to the Toyota owners web portal, register, add the vehicle, and see when it was put into first use to see if the warranties are in effect.

Oh, and lastly, don't drive like it's the Indianapolis 500. Drive like a g-damn grandma. Slow and smooth acceleration is key. Accelerating from 0 to 60 takes a lot out of fuel efficiency. Accelerating from 0 to 10, then 10 to 20, then 20 to 40, then 40 to 60 changes the dynamic. Momentum is your friend. Again, I get 23 MPG combined City and freeway, I live in a hilly area in Southern California. If I don't have the hills, I would be doing 26 MPG.

I average 17-18 on 285’s. Highway speeds no more than 75. It seems to me that individuals with a lot of aftermarket bolt on mods that increase weight suffer the most with reduced mileage.

Yeah my 07 just had a 3” Toytec lift and 285/70s, nothing else. It averaged 19 for a couple years, never reset. I reset it before making a trip from Houston to Chicago and got 21.7 going, 21.4 returning. After a few weeks back home it was back at 19. Should have kept that truck. :( This is making me want to take some stuff off my truck that isn’t daily use. lol

This is why mine is topless right now. The Jurassic Park basket is a gas mileage killer.

Just set your cruise control to 41 mph and don't use your brakes until you arrive at your destination.
