What do you carry in your 4R all the time and why?

I’ll second that - this entire forum is filled with great ideas and great stories - only when we occasionally touch on politics does the light dim a bit - but hey, that’s everywhere….

 

I'm a professional (some would say unprofessional) guide, taking people out on trips, so I never know when I might run into a new customer. I try not to be aggressive about it, because I feel like a prostitute sometimes, but if they ask what I do for a living...?

I'm also a rockhound, in an area with tons of quartz crystals and other minerals, so I pretty much always have some laying around. And sometimes when I take people out, I throw extra crystals on the ground for them to find.

I found a couple of dandy items in the "As Seen On TV" section of the store the other day. Stuff called Alien Tape. As usual, $19.95 for 3 pretty long rolls. Really handy stuff. It's technology they learned from the feet of geckoes. Sub-microscopic "hairs" that work their way in between the surface's atoms to grip with. Only real problems I found is that it has trouble with dusty surfaces. It sticks to the dust, not the surface. It's re-usable, too, just like gecko feet. Pull it off, clean it with clear water, and once it's dry, it's good to go again. Really nifty stuff.

I may be a gadget guy, I know I am, really, but I also grabbed one of those "Tac Pens". All kinda of cool features. Essentially, a metal tube with different items mounted in seperate sections. I like it, anywho...

I guess this is as good a place as any to put this up. A new permanent addition to my 4R. An 8" compact bug squeegee. I picked it up at a truck stop, didn't need fuel but since it is the harvest season here the windshield was covered in bug guts. Put the wiper arms up, hit the washer fluid and cleaned all of it off. Fold it back up and stow. For $8 bucks you could do worse.

I forgot to mention the most important thing I carry at ALL times in my 4Runner: My beautiful, loving WIFE.

She told me I had neglected to mention her, and smacked me upside the head a few times, so I'm here to correct my oversight. I don't need a headache from her smacking me. Especially if she switches to her cast iron frying pan to smack me. That's a certain headache on the way.

Very timely correction - well, almost….

 

Yeah. I got enough headaches without adding to them with real ones.

BUT, you know what "they" say, whoever "they" might be, "Happy wife, happy life." I do everything in my power to keep my better half happy. It's really paid off so far, and 22 years aint so bad. Looking forward to another 50 or 60 years, too. Presuming I live that long.
I never figured on living past 40, and I've beaten that by 23, so...

I figure on owning quality 4Runners for that time, too. I may have to auto trans, given nerve damage in feet and lower legs, but other than that little detail...

In the winter: a blanket for sure since I never know when the heater on my 1st gen will go out when on a ski trip lol

 

These Japanese saws are amazing. Watch the price on Amazon, it goes up and down, I paid $140 for mine a couple years ago. Cheaper than a chain saw. I have a gas chain saw but its a big pain to haul. The other option is a battery powered chain saw, if you have cordless power tools some of the chain saws use the same batteries. These are OK if you don't need to make too many cuts. I haven't tried the battery powered chain saw myself.

I take my Silky Katanaboy with me for any type of off road. These Silky saws are very high tech designs believe it or not. Incredible cutting capability if you use it properly. It only cuts on the pull, don't try to cut on the push stroke and you will be amazed at how fast it cuts. You can leave the chain saw at home for most cuts. The blade can be easily broken or bent if you try to cut on the push stroke.

If you think most of the obstructions will be smaller trees or brush branches, you can check out the folding Silky Bigboy2000.

 

I only saw it listed once in the last couple pages…FIRE EXTINGUISHER! Might save your’s or someone else’s truck, not to mention saving a possible wildfire out west.

 

I have a Fiskars folding saw, and I also carry a pocket chainsaw in my camelback I use while mountain biking. This thing works surprisingly well, I actually stopped carrying the Fiskars in my bag.

This may not be the exact brand I have, but close enough. I've cut through 6" trees/branches with it. It's great for impromptu trail maintenance.

Among many of the items mentioned in this thread, a replacement battery for the key fob..

 

I keep the 4r loaded with everything camping and off-roading that you can think of. It’s a full time purpose rig. Not dd, so I keep it loaded down. All we have to do is put the car seats and food in and we can be out indefinitely. As for cutting firewood a Milwaukee chainsaw stays in there

 

I know this is a bit old, but..

First, that seems way too expensive for the Katanaboy. I see they're about $180 right now.

Also; I have one. It's worth the cost. It cuts super fast, the handle is fantastic. It never needs batteries or fuel. It never doesn't start. It takes up very little space. I would buy it again 1000×.

When I know I'm going to clear a trail, I take my Husqvarna. Coincidentally, I'm headed up north to clear an old easement road to a beach I get to play on in the summer. But, the Silky saw is always in the 4Runner for emergencies/unexpected down trees on the trail.

If you're on the fence about it, get one!

I carry duct tape, and zip ties seem like a good idea.

I saw plastic sheeting and I thought "hmmm, IDK what I would need that for.“

Then I saw bleach and lye.

 

I fly a couple times a year and ever since 9-11 I carry a roll of duct tape in my carryon. Never been asked about it, nobody has raised an eyebrow. I guarantee if several of us had to subdue somebody that duct tape would be just what we need. And the last piece would go over their mouth.

 

My 4R is a 2WD road warrior, so it is equipped accordingly.

I don’t give them out I kept the whole stack. See This guy is the best even done Lions. He lost the use of his hands doing my Turkey. But I got it back shortly after a year. Oya the property owner gave him an extra hundred bucks and he got his back pretty quick.

If you sleep in your vehicle these are a must ! Mesh window cover to keep bugs out. Costs $15 & slides over the window frame allowing you to adjust window as needed for ventilation. Also provide sun protection.
