......OK.... We'll have to agree to disagree on how to handle rattle snakes in your yard.

we just had a rat snake in our garage last weekend. i tried to gently shoo him out with a push broom, but he turned around and tried to get right back in, then actually started coming up the broom handle towards me. not proud of this, but primal instinct took over and the fella got himself a Viking funeral in the back yard a little later (had to respect the little badass). I would rather not kill the ones who are helpful, but I don't want them under my roof either. any tips for discouraging them from coming in?

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
When I was about 13 or so, I wandered around the woods where I lived, and gathered up around 5 or 6 of those. Yes, in the Bay Area. I kept them in a terrarium in my bedroom. Had them for almost a year.
One afternoon I was reading a book out on the back patio when I heard a very loud screaming of my name from in the house. My mother was standing on the toilet, pointing and just screaming my name. One of my snakes had gotten out and was coiled up around the base of the toilet. My mother was a bit upset with me, to put it mildly. She made me gather them all up, and take them back to approximately where I had caught them, and let them go. Right then. Or else! :)

From then on, the only ones I could catch were the ones hunting the fish in our pond out back. Usually mosquito fish. There were three goldfish in the pond, but the original one I had put in was about 14 inches now, and didn't need to worry about garter snakes!
He was one of the little goldfish you can win in the circus, by tossing a ping-pong ball into their little glass globe. About 3/4 inch when I got him. He grew like mad, first in the tank in the house, then in the pond in our back yard we had. Named him Mark Spitz, to let you know the time frame.

My adventures with garter snakes in the Bay Area...
    Pat☺

Funny I think goldfish are their favorite food. Basically a water snake really. There is a highly venomous snake in Asia or something looks exactly like a Garter snake im positive they are realated.
It’s the Va state snake too.

Was patterned like a diamondback, it didn't stick around long enough for a photo unfortunately.

Ya they play dead usually and stick their tongue out. Western Hognose don’t have a “black” phase

If a Python locks onto you and won’t let go. A small drop of rubbing alcohol on your finger and touch its nose it will instantly release. They actually have HUGE retractable teeth.

I had a wild caught Agentina Boa constrictor. It was so mean it would hiss like the devil when you entered the room.
