Ya. Might need to bite bullet and get a low mileage T4R OR.

if interest rates keep going up it will slow car sales then maybe by end of year dealers may get more realistic resale prices. The bastards

Toyota is not giving us these turbo charged engines because they think we want super fast, super cool MINUS 2 CYLINDER motors. They're doing this to increase CARB "fuel economy" The problem is....the "fuel savings" come when the turbo isn't spooled up, aka - babying the throttle. In order to get the V6 type engine numbers, you need to have your foot in the throttle, which spools up the turbo and your mileage takes a dump.

Let's just hope the 6th gen is a little lighter then.

I read yesterday that this engine also makes significantly lower emissions than the six cylinder, which is not unimportant.

When you think about it, you have to put your foot into any engine to get the numbers. You don't drive around in your 4.0 with 278 horsepower all the time, you gotta put your foot in it and rev it to five grand to get that, at which point you're getting nearly single digit fuel economy numbers.

I would argue that the 2.4 will feel quicker without needing to be heavy on the throttle, because it makes peak torque at 1,700 RPM, which is typically where one does most of their driving. So you actually WILL hit your peak torque number and see significantly (probably nearly double) more torque that you would get in the 4.0 under normal driving conditions.

I guess it depends on one's driving style. I consistently hit 20 MPG with my 4Runner, so I'd probably get better than the EPA numbers with the 2.4, while somebody who gets 15 MPG with their 4Runner will probably also get lousy mileage with a 2.4.

When I test drove and rented a T4R I found myself having to floor it a lot getting on the highway ramps. And even when flooring it, it seemed a little sluggish. I am at about 6k feet elevation so sure that doesn’t help

Turbo will definitely help at altitude. Forced induction is the way to go at high altitude for sure.

I'm on the East Coast, so we don't really have real mountains or elevation like that, but even at the 3,000 to 4,000 ft elevation we have, I think my 2.5 liter turbo Volvo is way better in the mountains than my 4R.

I bought my first turbo Porsche, a Macan, in Colorado, it’s technically a Volkswagen engine with a 2 liter turbo four.

At 8000 feet and above you really start to notice the benefits of forced induction.

That is one flabby back-end. I'd probably immediately get a new rear bumper just to cut out all that plastic hanging off back there.

It doesn't fit the front, IMO.

I'm kind of nervous the rear end rendering could be pretty close to what we see in the 6th gen.

Look what happened to the new Sequoia. Same flabby ass end. It also looks like a damn Previa :annoyed:

I guess my point is IMO Toyota isn't going to a Turboed 4 banger because they think we want it or because it's better. They're doing it for better CAFE numbers. It's also why they're not supercharging the 2.4... the forced induction is there all the time because it's driven off the crank rather than exhaust pressure, which can be manipulated by how heavy footed you are. Having owned several turbo charged vehicles in my life, you don't get into the power until you have the turbo spooled up...like if you're towing something or have a lot of cargo weight on board.

Usually, if an auto company wants to make a performance vehicle, they supercharge it. Hellcat, Challenger, original Lighting, Trackhawk...all supercharged. And none, incidentally, have a waste gate because it's not needed on a supercharger. The wastegate on the Tundra is at the back of the engine and Toyota has been having major issues with them failing. Replacing them requires lifting the cab off the truck..which is very very cheap.

https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2022/04/2022-toyota-tundra-known-problems/#:~:text=Wastegate issues on 2022 Toyota, power and see the dealer.

Many people buy a 4Runner, leave it completely stock and never do anything with it that would put a strain on the engine. They're not gonna care one way or the other, unless they have to pay an expensive bill at the dealership on an out-of-warranty vehicle for a replacement wastegate.

OTOH, people like many on here who put on leveling/lift kits, install 285's then add stuff/gear/armor on/in it, may take issue with the 4 banger and the mileage. I guess we shall see because I think it's a foregone conclusion that's it's coming.

Of course we all know the smaller engines are due to emissions and fuel economy standards.

But, more torque at lower RPM's will make it more enjoyable to drive without having to rev it as much.

I think it will come down to driving style. I drove my brother's Ecoboost F150, and never needed to go above about 2000 RPM's. It had plenty of grunt without needing to step on it. Some people drive like race car drivers, though. And, they will probably get shitty mileage no matter what.

And, these engines and turbos are engineered for efficiency, not high end power. You won't need to beat on them to feel the boost. Again, peak torque on the Lexus is at 1700 RPM's.

I'm pretty sure Toyota and the EPA aren't the only people who would like to get better gas mileage.

And, I'm not sure how you think it's going to be an issue for those adding weight and oversized tires. More torque could only be better for them.

You are far more a perfect candidate for the new 4 cylinder Toyota motor than I am. I'll leave it at that.

As far as more torque, I'll believe it when I see it. Sounds like a bill of goods to me.

Just hurry up and get the software figured out for the 2020-2022's so I can get a Magnusson SC. Then I wont ever have to worry about torque in my 4.0L lol

Maybe I am. But, why? You don't want more torque and better fuel economy?

As far as a bill of goods; here are the specs on the Lexus version, right from their website:

    Screenshot_20220514-070002.jpg

I get it if people are concerned about the reliability of a turbo engine. I don't think it will end up being a problem, but I can understand why some would be concerned.

But, being concerned about power doesn't make sense.

It might be an ok engine as reliability goes but not as great as the 4.0 4.7 5.7 2.7 or 3.4

I’ve had a Subaru Forester turbo since 2004. Never had any problems with it, but it’s not constantly driven like a race car.
I wouldn’t worry much about a Toyota turbo motor.

It's a little bit early to say that, don't you think?

Like @ElectroBoy pointed out, turbo engines aren't inherently unreliable. I know it's not apples to apples, but some of the most bulletproof engines are turbo diesels.

True but the reliable turbo diesels can't be compared to even modern turbo diesels yet alone turbo 4s but time will tell I suppose.

Same, I'm not worried about turbos at all My 07 Volvo has 230k miles on the original turbo. This isn't some new technology that was invented years ago.

    What about the 22R-TE?

Isn't it considered to be a very reliable engine?
