So I've had a leaky boot on the passenger side CV for a while now, but the axle is still solid without any play, so I'm probably going to reboot that side. There's also been a pull to the left which I believe I finally found the source of. There's lateral play in the joint which I can feel by moving the axle while the truck's on the ground. Now, I'm not a professional, so correct me if I'm wrong, but that means I should probably replace it at some point. I've read reviews of a lot of these "re-manufacturers" that were not so great, so I'm wondering where people have sourced their replacement CV shafts, how long they've been in the truck, and how much it cost? I don't particularly want to spend $300 on a Toyota assembly, and I don't know if I should trust the Autozone Duralast brand.

tl;dr: If you've replaced a CV, where'd you get it, how long has it lasted, and how much did it cost?

Edit: Apparently lateral play is okay, I'm just dumb af, but still for future reference, please tell me

I got mine from carid . The entire assembly was approximately $60 and a shop here put it in for 120. It was a new assembly by cardone with the heavy duty boots. It's been in only 1000 miles but its been working great.

I'd highly recommend sticking with OEM, especially if you actually wheel.

This company http://www.cvjreman.com/ will take your OEM axles and swap them out with rebuilt OEM CV's, custom boots and whatever else you want. They are also extremely easy to do business with.

I will call them tomorrow! Thank you! Any idea on whether I can replace and send a core? Or do I actually have to send them mine first?

You order whatever you need from them. They build and ship. When they receive your core, they refund the core price.

Mine has been in for approximately 4000 miles with no problem. Truck spends 90% of its time off road. It even doubles as a tractor on occasion.

Got a used OEM off Ebay with 9000 miles on it for $150 (free shipping). I have had it on my rig for about 2 weeks now and it works great. Will be going offroading at Joshua Tree this weekend and will let you know how it goes!

Purchased the cardone with the heavy duty boot from carid.com. It is a new assembly not rebuilt with a cost of approximately $60.

I had an O'Reilly Special that I picked up for a trail fix. It was about $100 with warranty. I don't trust it to wheel so I replaced it with an OEM CV axle for about $450. It is now my trail spare for anyone who needs it. I also picked up a rebuilt Toyota OEM axle for a little cash as a trail spare for me.

I ended up calling CVJ Axles, and they're actually really inexpensive after the core exchange, but even before then, too.. I took it into the dealer for axles under warranty, had to take it back cause they forgot my engine skid, and now all is well.

I don't mean to hi Jack here but I didn't see it necessary to make a new thread.

Does anyone know if I could replace my 07 sport CV axles with one from a 2016 trail edition?

    Thanks

I did my v6 front axles about three years and 25000 miles ago. Both inner boots were ripped but there were no issues at the time. I got the pair from Advanced Auto for about $150. It was before i knew enough to worry about oem vs Chinese parts. The old ones were a pain to get out. I ended up building a slide hammer with threaded rod, vice grips, some heavy nuts and washers, and a 5 lb barbell weight. So far, i have had no issues.

It's always luck of the draw when dealing with aftermarket CVs for me. Thousands of people have bought the cheapest they could find and have no issues. Never went with a $60 axle, but tried plenty of the $80-$100 axles with so so results. The first one I replaced was a SurTrack on my 5th gen, forget where I bought it. It had a vibration between 45-55 mph. Pulled it and went with one from Napa, it had fitment issues and I could never get it to seat in the diff. Next one I bought was a Carquest, it's still in the truck 40k miles later and doing fine. Ripped a boot doing a Total Chaos setup on my 4th gen, lack of time dictated a quick swap instead of a boot replacement, so I went with another Carquest and it's doing fine. Around the same time frame my 5th gen ripped a boot on the OEM so I went with another Carquest and this is where my luck with that brand ran out. It popped into the diff quite easily, but when I went to bolt everything back up, I could barely get the axle to seat in the hub. Well I never checked the length and it was too long and binding during rotation. So I pulled that one back out and went to the interweb for more research without much luck.

I was going to go with a full price 1 miiiilllllliiiion dollar OEM axle. Well what I found out is like a big secret that no one seems to know about. Your Toyota Dealer can get and usually stocks an OEM reman at $140. I have been buying oil filters and little things a lot lately at Mike Erdman Toyota in Cocoa so they have gotten to know me. I told my parts guy Tim I wanted to keep the core (FREAKING LIKE GOLD!!), so he gave me the "at cost price" of $103, but with your dealer ymmv. I kept my OEM axle and paid the $50 core charge. Factory OEM $300+ = a lot of pissed off people about a $500 CV replacement at the dealer. So they offer the reman option. Fitment was perfect and it spins smooth as silk at all speeds. Sorry I haven't taken the time to figure out how to focus the camera in my new phone but here is the receipt.

I've been looking at CVJ and RCV for replacement axles. I was going to stay OEM, but want to go with an aftermarket company that leans more toward off-road axles.

Question: When you've (anyone here) installed your new CV axle into the diff, have you been able to just press it in past the snap ring by hand or have you had to hit the axle with a rubber mallet? I had a hell of a time getting mine to seat into the diff and had to resort to some brute force and was very worried about damaging the unseen internals...

Some times they are stubborn. Did you have the C clip opening pointing up? Your situation is the same as an issue I had with a Napa axle, could not get it to seat all the way and went thru the same doubts as you about damaging something inside the diff. When compared to another axle, it was an extra 1/8 - 3/16 of an inch longer. Other axles I've installed, a firm pop with a rubber mallet did the trick. Hopefully somebody with more knowledge will chime in. Good Luck!!

There ya go!! I think saving money on parts is a good thing, but the aggravation of using cheap shit that don't work half the time ain't worth it. It's luck of the draw most of the time putting the bargain brands on a Toyota. Even my buddy with an old 1st gen Taco says these trucks don't like cheap aftermarket crap.

I just changed the driver's side shaft assembly in my '03 with one from O'Reilly's - it is the import direct brand. They claim they are made by Aisin or whoever the original manufacturer was that did them for Toyota - we'll see how long it lasts but fitment was spot-on and no issues. Boots seem to be high quality and it runs smooth as silk. Think it was nearly $180 at my cost, but I have an account with them.

Say waaaaaaaaa? Post a side by side pic to be sure that it's a true tri lobed tulip cup of whatever only the OEM Toyota one's are (not like the round aftermarkets). If this is true this would be awesome! I've just been rebooting mine as needed and luckily haven't snapped one but it's only matter of time and I don't want to go with aftermarket there.

Unfortunately I won't see my other truck until Monday. I honestly don't remember if they had the tri lobe or not. At that point they fit and spun true and I was down the road after shit load of frustration lol. I'll see if I can post you a pic Monday eve.

@blackoutt These are as close as I can get to side by side. 2012 Limited OEM is in the last two pics. The inner tri lobe seems a little less pronounced on the reman but obviously I can't be sure without a side by side comparison. Outer looks identical. Just noticed it's from Mexico.1.jpg 3.jpg 5.jpg IMG_4391.jpg IMG_4392.jpg IMG_4393.jpg IMG_4394.jpg

Your currently installed one looks closer to a 4th gen OEM but still not the same cup, can't find a good pic but the part between machined flats are "deeper" on OEM I think? Maybe not.

The one removed sitting there in a box looks like a NAPA axle, long machined flats, clearly different cup.

The one in the box may well be a reman. I bought the truck with 58k miles from a Toyota dealer and I was thinking it might be an OEM. The Toyota reman has yet to really be tested on anything except a couple days off road here in Florida and some hwy driving.
