New to the forum, but been around others (3si.org, Bimmerforums.com, Jeepforum.com) for some time. Stealth died on me years ago, M3 was sold, and XJ is on it's last legs (234k mi and needs some serious suspension work I can't rationalize paying for) so now I'm toying (no pun intended) with the idea of picking up my first 4Runner.

Located in Indianapolis, been on the hunt for a month or two but it's proving tough to find something in my budget/specs. Ideal new ride would be 2000-2004 (newer if the price and condition are right), <150k, and <$6000. Buying private party could be tricky as I'd like to use a credit card, however anything in the range I mention from a dealer is either in pretty rough shape or closer to the $8k range. Figured I'd take a look around some forums to see what's available.

Welcome. <150k miles for < $6000 is going to be tough. Even more tough on the forums where people are enthusiasts.

Thanks- yeah, getting that impression. Price is firm as I'm also saving to buy and build a "skoolie". Mileage less so, especially if it's been well maintained as I'd expect from an enthusiast (though I realize that's not always the case). I love my Jeep, but the longer I look the more interested in 4Runners I become.

Three months from the day I posted I finally found a 4Runner in great shape- a "Thunder Cloud" silver 2001 Limited 4x4 with 161k miles. Test drove it 1/17, had it inspected 1/19, picked it up 1/20. Was able to have a look while it was on the lift, very clean underneath- virtually no rust, front/rear diff and trans. fluid were done about 50k mi. ago, timing belt was done about 20k mi. ago.

    Post-inspection needs:
    - PS brake bulb (done)
    - Wipers (done)
    - Front tires (on deck)
    - OE jack/roadside kit (edit: whoops, after searching the forum realized they were under the PS rear seat)
    - Wheel lock tool (edit: also found)
    - Rear cup holder cover (edit: found the piece tucked in the pocket behind the driver's seat... just need to figure out how to reinstall, appears to have a missing clip)
    - Valve cover gaskets (Spring/Summer project)
    - Replace radiator and/or install aux trans cooler

Already "put 'er through her paces" this past weekend, two trips out to Columbus, OH with zero problems. Very happy with it so far!

When the weather warms up I'll detail 'er and take some pics, for now here are some from the dealer's ad:

Very nice. Congrats on the find. Diligence paid off! I just recently purchased my first 4runner and love it.

If you want to call having paint sealant applied then yes. ;) The first things I will need to do are the 3" lift and tires. I will wait until my current stock tires need replaced and then do the lift/tires.

'Preciate it! Third gen's probably my favorite, too... perfect combo of reliability, capability, amenities, and styling.

Ha, count it! Start putting some miles on that thing :)

Had my eye on two, this one and another with 220k in little rougher, but still pretty good, shape listed at $4500. The higher mileage one sold before I could drive it on the 18th and there was a guy tired of letting his daughter drive his FJ looking at mine. Agreed on 6, cut the check, opened the moonroof, and drove off into the sunset!

Yours was one of the first build threads I came across after joining, probably going to end up back there for a write up or to get some ideas. Mostly concerned with reconditioning right now.
