2023 (last year of the 5th gen?) Preview thread

So based on all my online research or should I say the research of some very knowledgeable members on here and other forums, it can be safely speculated that 2023 will still be the 5th gen and 2024 most likely being the 1st year of the 6th gen. Based on those assumptions I would like to hear your speculations on the 2023.

So far 2020 we got radar cruise control and apple car play

2021 led low beams

2022 led low and high beams, with blind spot and cross traffic with optional front camera

Will 2023 have added features since it was for all intensive purposes supposed to be the 6th gen?

My two safe speculations are this; price will increase by 1,500 to 2k and I think the trd pro color will be solar octane on the current tundra trd pro

If you know anything about tacomas, the tech is years ahead of the 4runner for example 2018 had radar cruise control with blind spot and cross traffic and 2020 had led headlights on the Tacoma. Since it appears r&d is done on tacomas as far as tech features go, the 2022 4runner is caught up with the 2022 tacomas tech feature wise as far as i know so I don't see them rolling out a new feature unless they both release the new feature for the 2023 Tacoma and 4runner (Tacoma will still be 3rd gen for 2023)

2022 Tacoma trail had a rear locker for the 1st time so maybe the 2023 4runner trail will get a rear locker as well

I can also see them possibly discontinuing army green and maybe improving the atrociously bad camera in the 2022s

 

I can see a couple engine options coming. Turbo V6 like the Tundra (but detuned maybe) along with a 4 cylinder hybrid version. And just maybe only offer 3-4 models, SR5, Limited, Off-Road and a TRD Pro.. Hope they throw in another gear or 2 or 4 in the tranny too!

And I really hope they dont loose what makes a 4runner a 4runner...

 

OP, I respect that you want most or all of that stuff that you listed... That is precisely why I bought a 2019. I don't have any of that junk on mine - i.e. I won't have to pay for expensive repairs when it breaks. And it will break. I wanted the reliability of what I purchased, and that is what I got. I have rented 4Runners with all that stuff, and IMO, you are welcome to it. However, I will be interested to see what they do with the 6th GEN. Maybe if nothing more than to be glad for what I have.

 

That is 6th gen speculation. This thread is for what everyone thinks what the changes will be if any for the last year of the 5th gen

 

I actually want none of that. I have nothing to do with the engineers or bean counters at toyota.

this is just supposed to be a fun thread since 2023 models are around the corner but everyone is misreading what the point of this is.

but to go back to your point or assumptions about me, my 2010 tacoma is literally as base model analog as you can get (roll down windows, manual door locks and manual transmission. no Bluetooth anything including radio no cruise control at all)

And with respect you can see how I relate to you wanting no tech stuff but to think it's likely to be prone to fail is a little silly. Does yours have kdss? It's an "ancient" mechanical system but look it up there are more failures than you would think with it

And as far as the 6th gen goes, I guarantee it will not be anywhere as reliable as the current 5th gen including the 2022

 

Agreed that the first model year or two is best to stay away from. I can see where you posted this to be a fun thread, and I didn't mean to ruin that. I do have KDSS and am very happy with it. I very much appreciate what it was put there for. I have a coworker that has a 2008 Land Crusher with KDSS, and it has taken a huge beating without failure. The tech stuff that people have already posted having problems with is part of the reason I didn't want it. In any event, it will be interesting to watch the 6th GEN.

 

I agree that they will increase the price for the 2023 MY. I'm not sure what else they will do with the 5th gen for the remainder of its lifespan though. I can't really think of anything other than color changes or silly aftermarket roof rack/cooler packages.

Something that I do think will happen is the 5th gen will be out even longer than anticipated. I think come August 2023 we will still have the 5th gen (as a 2024 MY) while the 6th gen will either be a 2024 1/2 or a 2025 MY coming out around March 2024 at the earliest.

It's what the evidence points to at the moment. There is an official Toyota production schedule out there that shows the 6th gens production code [610L(2)] starting Jan 2024......which means an early 2024 release (at the earliest).

 

Geez. Well, hopefully it will be awesome and worth the wait. I've been debating on trading up if they really nail it.

 

The interior is rumored to be "really nice".

No idea what the exterior will look like other than it will probably be an evolution of the 5th gen.

Obviously there's 2.4L turbo and hybrid options we've all heard about......but one thing that has set back the release date is adding an EV only mode to the hybrid that the driver can control (which is really cool, IMO).

There are still some rumors of a V6 Twin turbo option (to keep up with competitors like the Jeep or Bronco) but I'm skeptical. We all know that Toyota typically errs on the side of reliability vs performance.

I can see them doing this on the Gen 6 but why reinvent the platform on the suspected last year model. Doesnt make much business sense. I guess time will tell.

we all know this gen will be produced forever and ever until the end of time
by 2032 we will get led interior lights
by 2035 a 10" screen with a resolution slightly better than current
by 2040 a recall on the 5th gen as the owners should have purchased something newer by then
full revamp by 2050 as they will move again the heated seats knobs down in the center

 

You forgot that sometime around 2035 the needle bearing will be re-designed.

Since we’re all just wishfully thinking here, what I really want is a decontented base model 4Runner for less than $35,000 that has lockers and some type of rudimentary crawl control, it can be manual.

My prediction is that 2023 Toyota will make Dual Zone Auto AC standard on TRD Premium, SR5 Premium

Currently to get that I either have to step into a Limited or a Pro

 

This is about the only thing left on the parts shelf that they can trickle down from the Limited/Pro. That and the parking sensors, which if they did put them on lower trims, it would be SR5 Premium most likely. If they do add DZCC, it will be an optional "premium" package thing sort of how they do it with the Tacoma at the moment. If they add DZCC to the TRDORP, then they have to give the TRD PRO something to differentiate it, so maybe heated/cooled seats get added to the PRO? More likely they will make no production changes at all for a final MY. The rumor mill is pointing to a 2024/2024.5 MY 6th gen. If that is the case, doesn't make a whole lot of sense to mess with a production line that will only exist for the next 12-18mo max, considering the 4Runner is selling like hot cakes in the current configuration.

IMHO all this speculation will be resolved in 8-10wks when they get ready to switch over to 2023MY production in August.

If you really want dual zone... it can be done.

 

Tacoma was more generous, from 2021 MY all V6 gets Auto AC with a $350 bump in MSRP to "justify" that
but who knows, with all the chip shortage, they probably won't do anything to 4Runner because more advanced tech needs more chips
