Is transfer case on V8 the same as the V6?

    Hello,

I have a 04 V6 4runner, my transfer case actuator recently went out and I've been looking at salvage yards for one. I recently found one, but the 4runner is a V8. Is there a difference in the transfer cases that I would need to know about? Any advice helps.

    Best,
    Trieu Phung

The two are very similar, but not identical. The VF4AM transfer case has 3 shift rails to allow hi/lo range, center locking, and 2H/4H power distribution. The VF4BM has 2 shift rails only for hi/lo range and center diff lock.

For your application, you need to make sure the V8 runner was not a limited trim, as it only came with the VF4BM since it only operated (in a technical sense) in 4H (aka all 4 wheels driven), and then could shift to 4Lo and center locked. The other trims are able to have the VF4AM to run in 2H (aka 2 wheel drive), which would mean the actuator would work the same with your V6. The other thing to check are the physical electrical connections when you pull the actuator.

Let us know what you find.

The info in this topic is wrong for 4th Gen T4Rs!!

    All 4th Gen 4Runners with a V8 are full time 4WD, it doesn't matter if it's a Limited, SR5 or Sport Edition, they're all full time 4WD.

All 4Th Gen 4runners with a V6 are part time 4WD, you can either drive it in 2WD or 4WD, it doesn't matter if it's a Limited, SR5 or Sport Edition, they're all par time 4WD.

    Good information!

I had an '03 SR5 V8, and it was full time 4wd. That thing ruled in snow!

AuSeeker, do you know if that transfer case (the one for V8 Full Time 4Hi) is rather universal across model years? I'm in need and currently scouring junkyards, ebay, and anywhere else I can think to look. Thanks in advance!

They are the same for all the 4th Gen V8 model years...2003 to 2009.

It also appears but I can't verify it because I haven't needed to research 5th Gens at the present time, that it the same transfer case for some 5Th Gen Limited models, if so then these models would have to have full time 4WD.

Here's the part number and a link to a Toyota dealership parts website and if you scroll down to where it shows the "Vehicle Fitment" section you will see they list some 5th Gen Limited models.

Blackshaw, did you ever find a transfer case? I am in need of one as well for my 2004 v8.
