5th Gen Running Boards..

Hi All,
New to this forum but a chronic Toyota/4runner fan. I'm looking for running boards compatible with my 2022 SR5 Premium and not having much luck. The vehicle (metallic blue) came with none and I'd like to find a set which foremost can be function as a real step for shorter family members (where foot traffic isn't directly wearing the board finish) and then offer some degree of rocker panel shielding. I have a Gen 2 and Gen 4 in the driveway (long story) with OEM boards and can't seem to find an aftermarket offering which compares, looks good, and doesn't have an unsightly gap between the board and bottom of the rocker. I believe some Gen 5 4runner trims (trail, TRD, ?) have rocker panel which extend downward an additional few inches and it appears some/many aftermarket boards are designed to clear the lower trim rockers which leave an unsightly gap on the standard rockers. I've seen pictures of the Toyota OEM 2022 boards which didn't really draw me (but to be fair can't accurately tell from stock pictures). Any input to help guide a search much appreciated. I'm growing tired of manufacturers who can't tell me what they are selling in advance and trial and error order/returning. Thanks!

 

Oem running boards come up for sale constantly on this forum. Are you interested in those at all?

The latest 4R trims with the lower rocker panels are the Limited, Nightshade, and Sport.

Possibly and my qualifier above is I really can't tell cosmetically how they compare with aftermarket offerings as I've only seen low res photos. You can't even FIND a 4runner on a dealer lot for "tire kicking" locally and my 4runner was headed here on a boat when I put a deposit on it. So I can't tell if the OEM board bodies are aluminum or steel nor if a polymer mat wear surface exists on the boards.

 

Recently bought a 22 SR5 and went back and forth trying to find the right solution. Was set on OEM running boards, but after trying them on a 4Runner on the dealer lot, I found they sat too high for me to be functional. I ended up with these N-Fab Predator Pro steps. May not be what you’re looking for. Just throwing it out as an option. Good luck!

You can get OEM rock sliders now. I am sure they are not as the same quality as others but still offer more protection than side steps.

 

Thanks for the picture. Although I'm still unclear if the OEM running board structure here is steel or aluminum and whether a poly mat/cover exists to prevent scuffing the metal base. In different times (4runners found on a dealer lot) I'd crawl under one and satisfy my curiosity. I think my 2000 M/T runner's boards actually clamp to the frame vs. body as appears to be the case for model years after that.

 

Having had the nfabs and predator steps these oem trail boards are far more practical. Fits better than either of the step style I had as well.

 

Id think there would be a million people selling the OEM running boards out there. Its usually one of the first things to go, in favor for aftermarket set ups for many that hit the dirt/rocks.

Yea I was trying to find someone in my ballpark (southern NH) with a post in the Marketplace forum. However it looks like an account needs to be over 30 days old to allow that.

These are the trims with the extended (lower relative to the frame) rocker panels, correct?

 

My round tube OEM steps have been in my garage attic since about an hour after I bought my '20. I'd nearly give them away just to have them gone. There's gotta be someone near you looking to unload a pair.

Yes. The 2010-2013 SR5 & Limited also had that, but 2014 and on just the Limited. Then they recently added the TRD Sport, I think it's called, and resurrected the lower rocker panels to resemble the Limited.

I just installed tyger riders on my '22 SR5.....
I was looking for the easiest idiot-proof dyi install I could find and that's exactly what I got...all delivered for less than $200....

Very happy with the product, the company and the results.

 

I'm waiting for my Westcott Designs Slider/steps to arrive, going on 6 weeks....

 

That is worth consideration as it has a polymer step pad. I don't know how much rocker panel shielding a pipe profile would provide but to be fair I can't say what extent the flat boards on the 2000 and 2006 have functioned here. The polymer pad (either inherent or added afterwards) is somewhat non-negotiable given the height of the Gen5 pretty much assures they will receive foot abrasion. OTOH to my eye the 4runner just looks like something was forgotten at the factory. At the other end of the spectrum is something like this, attractive from a starship enterprise perspective:

But no polymer step pad and I couldn't get a straight answer from anyone how much clearance gets eaten up by the apparently deep board vertical profile. My problem is there are way too many choices. Otherwise it would be a buy / bolt-on / forget-it proposition.

 

Rock sliders and running boards/rails are structurally two totally separate things....the tyger riders I opted for were simply a step assisted access to roof rail cargo on my 4runner......

I needed a 300 lb rating on the system for standing only....

I'm not in the habit of bouncing along on boulders...

Rock sliders have a whole different install that connects to the primary chassis frame...

 

I just added the oem running boards to my 2022. I wanted them to keep snow, rocks and mud off the side of my car when on the winter highways. Plus my wife is short.

 

I have a Nightshade, so my choices are slim to none. I will get the OEM ones, if I can find someone in the wild using them, to see how much, or how little step you actually have. Its really for the ladies, my 2 daughter, grand daughters and , the wife.. They are vertically challenged, and a step helps..
If I have to go Toyota, which I will probably go, whos the best place to buy, as prices are all over the price...at least for Nightshade black ones.

 

Yea, after not much success the first time around, I'm back to this again -- nudged by complaints of "why would anyone design a vehicle so difficult to get in/out of?". Anyway from my perspective it is more a cosmetic issue from the fact that nautical blue is WAY darker than I bargained for. And there isn't much of contrasting trim in my 4runner so I'm now looking at these:

Bumping an old thread because I'm at work and cant crawl under and look/measure. Just bought a used set off a 2020 Offroad and they have a little flap/air dam on 1 end(circled). Does that sit to the front or the back?

 

Offering an uneducated guess I'd hope they present that pic as left to right/front to back, which tells me it belongs at the rear of the running board.

 

Hate running boards but unfortunately wife and kid have been complaining the truck is too tall
Dont want to spend $$ on a rock slider which looks way better but is expensive. Already have a bunch of things lined up to be taken care of on this new vehicle..
I will be in the market for a new running boards soon..

 

The air dam is installed at the rear of the running boards. Supposedly for aerodynamic reasons.

 

I would love to sell my 2019 running boards before buying sliders.

 

Hi all - new to the forum and a first time 4Runner owner! I just bought a 2022 TRD Sport in Lunar Rock as it popped up at my local dealer as a trade in with less than 9k miles on it. I'd like to add running boards for the wife and kiddo, but it seems like many of the best options are not for the Sport, Limited or Nightshade. I'd be interested in buying used off someone in the forum or if someone can point me to options that are known to fit the sport. I've already found these, but am not certain I want the chrome on the side. Appreciate the help!
