OEM Audio + in 2022 ORP, speakers only?

Not completely thrilled with the sound of the stock stereo in our new ORP, but wasn't expecting to be. It's OK for now, but thinking I would add OEM Audio + speakers and skip the amp/Sub. Has anyone gone with just the upgraded speakers? Was it worth it?

 

I don’t think OEM audio sells just speakers; I think they only sell as a package? Even if they did, the value in the OEM audio setup is in the amp and digital processing; not so much for their speakers alone.

If you just want to swap speakers, I’d just look for something with a high sensitivity rating (will work well with low power); the kicker CS series is a popular swap.

Would also strongly recommend swapping in a good pair of tweeters in the dash. I know the kicker Subaru dash speaker swap is popular, or stuffing in larger midranges in there… but in my experience, a good quality 1” soft dome tweeter there makes a huge improvement in clarity and high end detail.

 

I purchased the speaker package from OEM (including the tweeters), love them. Big difference in the sound, well worth the cost, in my opinion. Check them out on Facebook, I got free shipping from their Facebook ad. If you like them, get it. Your $, spend it as you like.

 

I ran just the speakers off of my aftermarket headunit while my amp was down (needed a firmware flash) and just that change made a larger difference in sound quality than swapping headunits.

 

Just the speakers, no sub or amp?

 

I got the whole setup but just installed the speakers for a few months. The speakers are crazy good without the amps.

 

Just ordered 8 speakers from Crutchfield with the supplied brackets and everything for around 330 with free shipping. Oem charges 750 for just the speakers. IMHO not worth it but your call

 

I just ordered the complete system w/ dedicated amp. I actually got to hear one with just the speakers as he took the amp and sub out as it was a trade in and I was blown away at how much more quality in sound there is. I can't wait to get my kit in in the next 2 weeks and will install IMMEDIATELY lol

 

Apples to apples, are they the same speakers?

 

Rockford fosgate . Noone sells oem audio except oem audio. There isn't anything super special about oem besides plug and play for specific cars. They look to have have good build quality and similar specs to any decent speaker which can also work in any vehicle provided you have the right adapters. Crutchfield supplies everything at no extra charge

 

Getting real close myself to upgrading the audio in my ‘21. Mostly debating whether to use Focal or Dynaudio for the speakers and finding the best enclosure solution for the subwoofer.

 

Please share if you find a system with a sub that fits into the "storage area" on the right side where the OEM JBL sub goes on the LTD and Pro models.

 

I was wondering if that was the design on JL’s Stealthbox. Genuinely surprised they do not offer one considering the 12 years (and counting) that have gone by.

I am moving back to civilization soon and would guess there are some pretty amazing car audio shops in Orange County. Should any SoCal folk have any recommended shops, please let me know.

 

This guy makes the side box for the useless cubby. I will more than likely upgrade to it because I want more bass my OEM Audio dual sub system (I have the single sub) may not be able to provide.

Nice. While very much appreciating what OEM+ is offering, once a wire is cut. I generally go over the SQ deep end once a wire has been cut from stock.

 

2021 TRD ORP w/Nav. I just decided to do aftermarket speaker upgrades. I went with:

1. Infinity Kappa 62IX 6.5" coaxial speakers in the rear lift gate and rear doors - sensitivity: 95 dB / 2.5ohm
2. Infinity Kappa 693M 6x9"3-way car speakers in the front doors - sensitivity: 94 dB / 3ohm
3. Kenwood Excelon
   $99 KFC-X2C 2.5" Mid Range Factory Replacement Car Speakers, 120 Watts Max Power (Pair)
   KFC-X2C 2-3/4" speaker in the front dash - sensitivity: 83 dB / 4ohm

I treated the doors, lift gate and a few key areas with 80 mil butyl sound deadener and cut a Dynamat DynaPad to fit under the cargo area carpet in the rear.

My preferred sound stage presence is to have more of an front - rear balanced listening experience.
This is a bit of a difficulty to achieve with the stock HU and amp as most manufacturers push a very heavy front dash sound stage.
If you use the fader to put more focus on the rear speakers the front dash volume comes down BUT front doors suffer from reduced power and that's where a stock 4Runner make it's bass.

To solve this problem I first put a capacitor on the front dash speakers, to block bass at 1200hz and below, I then put a 16ohm 100watt aluminum case wire wound resistor in series after the capacitor.
This increased the total resistance to ~20ohm attenuating the front dash volume by about 12db.

I now can keep my fader dead centered and the overall soundstage is very front - rear balanced with solid bass.
The systems fidelity has been greatly improved over the stock speakers plus cabin noise is down.

 

Respect. Are the Excelon’s soft dome tweeters? I am surprised they are so inefficient comparatively. Really dig the solutions you came up with for a crossover network. Also for using the rears as more than fill.

 

Has anyone been able to find what the 22 4runner orp radio wattage is. Peak wats etc? Hard to find anything online with the specs. Non jbl. Is it 180?

 

It's going to be more like 10-15.

Yes. You would have to purchase the JL shallow mount 10" sub and amp.

KFC-X2C are technically a midrange speaker.
They have carbon-fiber cones with a frequency range of 800-20,000 Hz

I love the smoothness of a good soft dome tweeter and think that would work well also.

 

Will check out the Excelon. While I very much like a soft dome, in a mobile application, I have primarily used Focal’s inverted dome metal tweeter, but Dynaudio’s Esotec tweeter is so, so good.

My current thinking is to start with speakers first with outboard amplification and using whatever the modern implementation of JL’s CleanSweep.

 

If you're trying to do it on a budget, I would recommend putting your money into a new head unit and amp. Your stock speakers are going to sound easily 10 times better with proper power behind them. I know this from experience when I put my Pioneer head unit in my 4Runner before I was able to get the speakers. The head unit and the amp made a huge difference to the point that we were actually concerned the stock speakers might sound as good as the upgraded aftermarket. Fortunately we were wrong about that in the aftermarket speakers sound significantly better, but the point is that the head unit and the amp made a huge difference in the ability of the stock speakers to perform. Envy you being able to swap out your H/U. If I was on a pretty tight budget, I would just add a box and amplifier as bang (ha) for buck, it is tough to beat.

 

You could probably get the new head unit and the dash piece for around 4 to $500. And you could install yourself it's not difficult. Speakers probably run you're more than that especially installed. Just the amplifier that's built into the new head unit is going to be superior to what you have stock.

At this stage, with a brand new vehicle, I think I'd like to keep it as much stock looking as possible, and so everything works as integrated. Speakers won't change the look and figure they will be an improvement over stock. I'm not a huge Audiophile, so doesn't have to be perfect, or loud enough to have a party at my campsite. But maybe an amp at some point to clean up things if speakers don't make enough difference.
The stock head unit gets plenty loud, but can be a bit boomy/muddy, depending on the source (so far my old iPod Classic has the best sound from all the sources I've tried).
I took a look at the Pioneer HU and not a fan of knobless controls either.
