Having a greater presence on the road...

Completely loving my 2020 4Runner Off Road Pro. But I would like it to have a greater presence on the road.

One way I thought I might achieve this is with a lift. There is a 1 inch lift in the form of puck that is an option on the Tacoma. Can this lift be used on the 4Runner?

I like the idea of the 1 inch lift with a slightly bigger tire. It will add to my presence on the road and doesn't require additional modifications larger lift kits require due to body articulation.

Another thought is an upgrade to the exhaust. I want my 4Runner to sound like it means business. I want the throaty sound of a v8. This too will increase the presence of the vehicle on the road.

Any other suggestions? Thoughts about my ideas?

Interesting goal to have set yourself. Increasing your presence on the road. The throatier exhaust is a good idea. I don’t know if a 1” lift would do much. You’ll need a good 3” to make the statement I think you’re looking for. Rather than bigger tires perhaps you should be looking at chunkier ones – with huge lugs and lots of sidewall detail. And the obvious thing you are missing is a vinyl wrap in a wild color or pattern. An array of aftermarket equipment stickers on the rear side window always commands respect. It doesn’t matter if your truck actually has equipment from all the companies represented. A roof rack or a tall basket with a ladder, loaded with a Hi-Lift jack and a shovel and a couple of jerry cans is a good eye-catcher. Top it off with some bright red or yellow shackles hanging off the tow rings and hitch receiver. Like jewelry on a beautiful woman.

But the best advice I could give you is to trade in your 4Runner for a Wrangler. There are way more attention getters available to bolt onto a Jeep. And if it’s charisma you are after, what can beat a Jeep? I mean seriously.

I’ve always been a more subtle form-follows-function guy myself.

 

Do you have ann Off Road or a Pro? There is no Off Road Pro.

Yes there are 1" spacer lifts available.

No aftermarket exhaust will make your 4R sound like it has a V8. Louder, yes.

 

There are spacer lifts specific to you vehicle. I wouldn't use anything that isn't specifically designed for your exact vehicle.

You'll never get a V8 exhaust note out of a V6. There are a few threads here about exhaust. I would check out Youtube reviews to get an idea of the sound.

Look out for exhaust systems woth excessive "drone." I put a cat-back on my '03 V8 and ended up hating it because of the constant noise.

I would avoid any exhaust upgrade that is cheap. You might end up with reduced performance. Or, in my experience, it sounds great at first and ends up loud AF after a year or so.

 

A louder horn can alert others to your presence when you need to do so. The factory “blerp blerp” doesn’t exactly command attention imho. I got one for about $40 that is exactly twice as loud as the factory horn, still well within legal restrictions and it’s enough. Ain’t nobody ignoring my truck if I need to hit it.

 

I agree with the others, 6 cylinder engines just don’t sound good with louder exhaust. You just can’t beat a good V8 with the right exhaust system.

When I was younger, we used to refer to some cars as "sleepers". They were cars that looked stock, but when challenged, were absolute monsters in the 1/4 mile.

I am somewhat conservative as far as appearance goes. So wraps and such are not my style. Appearance changes are ok, but I'm thinking modest lifts and things of that nature.

I thought the one inch lift was a good idea as it would put me a step above the stock 4Runners rolling around the streets in my area. I've already added the Off Road Pro rims and tires along with tube steps (I have the original running boards if anyone wants them).

I was thinking some accessory lighting and perhaps replacing the front bumper with something more aggressive, but that concerns me as I am unsure how such an addition will effect the safety features and other functionality of the vehicle.

Meh. My LS1 with a Magnaflow catback sounds better.

It's all subjective though. Some people even think FOUR cylinders sound good.

Agreed! I actually think a 4 banger can sound good. They usually don't, but they can.

A V8 is tough to beat. BUT, the I6 is better than a V8, IMO.

And, I would agree that V6's typically sound like garbage with a loud exhaust.

But, my point was that not all 6 cylinders sound bad. My '85 Supra had a Pacesetter header and Magnaflow muffler, and sounded better than that clip from Youtube. That was just a clip that popped up.

 

Careful with a noisy bigger presence.....

Starving for attention with excessive noise comes across as being an azz hole in my neighborhood.

 

I have one running with the stock horn but not loud as I expected.

 

How about painting it pink with black stripes? ;-)

That was all scripted, I remember wanting to go out and talk with them when they drove past Mobile, AL but couldn’t make it because of work. One of my friends managed to run into them in a parking lot and bullshit for a while.

 

I must confess that my previous reply contained more than a little tongue in cheek.

When I was about 17 or so I saw the ultimate sleeper. Paul Newman driving a VW Squareback wagon with a V8 in the back on the freeway. Absolutely jaw dropping.

 

Get a wrap like this guy: You'll have the undivided attention of all those around you!

 

Or, how many bullet holes it would collect during hunting season.

 

I have a Chevy I6 (1959 Chevy Apache) with a modified exhaust header (separated into two outputs).

With the windows down you hear the cylinder firing order coming in from each side separately.

Save up for the magnuson blower kit and go with a magnaflow or gibson exhaust and weld in some better resonators so it doesn’t drone and sound like poo. That’ll sound mean.

 

Trade it towards a Wrangler 392 or any V8 powered fullsize. No matter what you do, the 4.0 isn't going to sound "mean".
