    Hi all,

So I am looking to get my first ever 4runner. I am looking between either the 2017 TRD Pro or the 2017 Off-road Premium. Theres a 2017 cement TRD Pro that Im gonna check out that is coming in to a dealership this week or next week. I have a few questions I was hoping some of you guys would be able to help me out with.

Is the KDSS worth the money if I go with the off-road premium? Also, I was thinking of getting the sun roof with the off-road premium, but if I do get it, how would this affect any future roof rack that I may get? Will roof racks be too low and the sun roof would hit the rack when opened?

I appreciate any answers. Thanks all.

I can't comment on the KDSS, but below are the differences between the two models.

    Pro-
    Bilstein TRD Pro Front Coilovers
Bilstein TRD Pro Rear Resi Shocks
    TRD Pro Shift Knob
    TRD Pro Floor Mats
    TRD Pro Front Grille

    Off-Road Premium
    Moon Roof

You won't have an issue with OEM or aftermarket roof racks. Most, if not all have an option for moon roofs.

Do you think that the TRD Pro is worth the couple thousand extra? The Bilstein coilovers and etc. I am new to anything off roading but want to get into it. I kind of view the TRD Pro as a way to get into the game but would it be cheaper to buy a lift/tires and pay for the service work to have someone install that stuff for me on the off road premium?

To be honest the only reason I bought it was because I wanted the Insurgent Tan color.

If I was to do it again I would of bought an SR5 Premium, and put the $10k into suspension and armor upgrades. I'm not super into the terrain select stuff, but it does work well.

Thats not to say I'm not happy with my purchase, I f#*%in' love this thing.

I just sold my 15 Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x4 because I'm moving to Korea after my deployment. I'm going to get a 4Runner when I return. I want either the TRD Pro or TRD Off Road Premium with TRD Wheels. My wife wants a 3rd row, so wondering what folks think of the SR5 Premium with TRD Suspension and Wheels added?

I really like that the Pro and O/R have a locking rear diff, and the crawl control and terrain select are niceties, but wondering folks opinions on the matter. I have time before I buy.

You're much better off getting an SR5 or trail (offroad) with kdss than a trd pro in my opinion (if you plan on eventually upgrading suspension). I have a '15 trail with kdss and can now say I've driven that and an sr5, both stock and with suspension upgrade on and offroad. I like the on road feel of the kdss as it is more firm and planted. I've been told the kdss allows for more travel offroad, and personally felt it had better traction than an sr5 with suspension upgrade. I would suggest going with an SR5 while saving a bunch of money to customize to your preference. And to be honest there is hardly any difference in performance between a stock trd pro or trail (off road) with the same tires.

In all reality bilstein 5100s are not in the upper tier of offroad suspension, although durable, but the trd pro badges do add 20-30 hp when the sun sets in the east after a long day. I can't knock the cement color tho.

    My 2 cents

Not sure if you've made your decision yet, but here's why I went with the OR premium. The main reason I went with it was because I wanted the moon roof and I knew I was going to upgrade the suspension anyway. Also the OR premium has some luxury features that the the Pro doesn't have; like power passenger seat and turn signal indicators on the mirrors, those feature may effect resale value in the future and if I'm paying that much I want those little feature. Another thing to consider is that you can buy pretty much everything from the pro aftermarket; the grille, suspension, wheels, trd accessories. So if you really want any of that you can buy it later. Also don't consider price because if you add anything to the OR premium you're going to be paying the same prices as you would for a Pro, and there's not any packages to add onto the Pro, just accessories.

I have a pro tundra and I only bought it because of the color. I was looking at the pro 4runner for my wife but just got an sr5. I can make it way better than pro for the extra $10k.

Does it? On the website it shows it as not even being an available option on the Pro. Not that that was a deciding factor, but Toyota should fix their website.

Hey so actually I did make my decision. I just bought my first car ever last night and it's the Trail Premium! Like you I wanted the moon roof as well and I figured that since I'm planning on upgrading the suspension anyways, no point in getting the TRD Pro. And I do a lot of highway driving so I felt that the KDSS had more value to it.

I wanted to get it in Magnetic Grey but the dealership sold it the night before I went in even though I told them I was going to buy it. But I got it in Silver and love it! Plus the car had just came from port so I am her first driver and she only had 2 miles on it. The parts I want to buy are just flying through my mind...

Great comments guys. I can understand your point of view.

    Here's mine.

I purchased the TRDP for the rarity of the color combo. (Quicksand aka insurgent tan) At this point in my life, I wanted something tough but stock from the factory without having to change much.

I've lifted trucks, changed gears, suspension and all kinds of extra stuff that in the long run really didn't do much for me. I don't have to compensate for anything by lifting my vehicles. We have about a years worth of miles on her now and can still sell her for about $10,000 more than I spent.

That's the difference fellas, it's called exit strategy, every large purchase should have this plan. Since only 3000 or so units were delivered to the U.S shores, this will keep our resale higher than the average. Plus it's a really cool rig that's a blast to drive.

Let's be honest, I would tend to believe that most of us will keep our rigs on the pavement with the occasional off road trip so we can justify all the mods that we've spent hard earned money on.

If you like driving a rig that not to many people have, if you like to have some things a bit exclusive, then the TRDP would be my suggestion to you. I'm a believer and that's why I've ordered another one built in the new color cement.

    Cheers.

I could be wrong, but I get the feeling you think I was bad mouthing the TRDP and that's not the case at all. Like I said the main reason I didn't get one is because I wanted the moon roof. If the Pro came with that option I probably would have got it. At the end of the day its about buying what you want. If you want a specific color, like quicksand, get the Pro. If you want a moon roof get the OR. Me I like white on vehicles, so even though I really like the Cement and Quicksand, I knew I wanted White so color wasn't a factor. In the end your always going to lose money on a new car(Im not sure how you can get 10k more than paid unless you just got a ridiculously good deal) so you might as well buy why you like and enjoy it.

Not at all. No offense taken. Just trying to explain why I purchased the TRDP. Paid MSRP which was $42,400 and was offered $50,000 two weeks ago. Very rare color and machine that will prob not be made again. That's the really cool part.

I've had many cars with sun/moon roofs and living in the humidity of Houston, we get about 60 days where we can enjoy those nice features.

Man if somebody offered me $50k I might have taken it haha. You're right about Quicksand being rare, I don't think I've ever actually seen a 4R that color in my area. Moon roofs aren't everybody's thing, but I've had a couple vehicles with them and its a feature I really enjoy. I live in central California though so I can put it to use pretty much year round.

Between those two, you could not make a wrong decision, so congratulations on your purchase!

I loved the Pro when I bought mine, but they were not very available, and I have a built in aversion to paying list price, not to mention over list price, for anything .. but, I'm cheap, and one can't go by me, because I like soggy cereal and wilted salad!

I bought the Trail Edition. I don't like sun/moon roofs, because it's another chance for leakage, and I'm not a sun worshipper. Given the opportunity, I always seek a shady place. I didn't need puddle lights to shine on the puddle I'm about to step into. I'm a bit older, and used to doing things for myself rather an electric motor or piece of electronics do it for me ... a minimalist, if you will. I've lived my life by the old Engineering axiom .. "Less is More!"

So, I'm happy with my Trail, although I wouldn't mind going back to the days of window cranks, dimmer switches on the floor, and push button radios with only 5 presets.

But, as I said, I love all 4Runners, an seeing the photos of them .. Congrats again to all the new owners!

I completely get it. After being in the Marines I have a bit of an affinity for those desert tan colors myself.

If you buy an SR5 and add that stuff on you're going to be paying basically TRDP price for an SR5...so how bad does your wife want that 3rd row seat? That's really what it comes down to. Figure out what features you must have and that will tell you what model to get. If the 3rd row is a must then Im pretty sure the SR5 or Limited are your only options.

That's what we'll need to figure out. I know the 3rd row is super cramped, I want to talk her out of it and get the TRD O/R Premium, unless there's a sick color for Pro that year. I like white but my wife loves Quicksand. We'll see what they offer in 2018. I won't buy the limited, the front end is hideous to me. Not my 4Runner but we see this one at my work a lot and she loves it.

I am also trying to decide between a TRD Pro and Off-Road Premium. Chances are I will be doing long-distance highway driving, followed by off-roading. Does the KDSS option really help both highway and trail driving? I would certainly appreciate something that smooths out those long highway drives in particular. Thanks for any suggestions.

Wow, that's one cool TRDP in quicksand. Best I've seen.
