Adding steps to rock sliders ?

Hi! I just got my first 4Runner and it came with factory installed rock sliders. They cannot be used as steps as they don’t protrude enough. I’ve been searching online for steps to attach but nothing seems available that I can find for a 2022 ‍♀️

 

Not gonna happen. Buy actual steps if you want them

 

No one makes steps to add to an OEM slider. But, what would be helpful is a pic of what have now.

 

That’s Kinda what I thought. You’ll have to excuse my lack of knowledge I didn’t know if sliders had to be removed to install running boards or steps.

 

May be selling those and buying a stronger and much usable slider might be a better choice?
My kiddo can keep both feet on the kickout of my RSG sliders that make it very safe getting in and out.

I was thinking the same! I have been wanting to take the Predator Steps off since I bought it in May.

 

You might consider purchasing NFAB steps which are made to be attached. Each pair is about $100, however when I was researching this I saw Amazon warehouse has at least one pair of steps classified as 'Used - Very Good - repackaged' for $63.

If your handy you could create mounting tabs (two per step). I have these steps which I installed myself. Very solid/sturdy. Would be a bit of a pain to remove but could be done obviously.

Whats your budget to buy new steps? Toyota makes another version called the Predator that looks just like that but has a step welded under all 4 doors. Many companies on Amazon and FleaBay make knockoff versions much much cheaper. If you buy something new, put yours on Craiglist or Facebook Marketplace. They will sell quickly.

I tried asking if these would fit over on the other forum but the question was quickly dismissed. I'd be interested in the Toyota OEM Rock Rails if there was a way to attach a step like the NFab. Curious how "off" the step is right out of the gate. Anyone with the OEM rock rails willing to give it a try? (Free returns through Amazon if they don't fit)

 

Without knowing your specific need (e.g., remove them in certain instances) or your fabrication ability, I personally would not pay to much attention to someone just dismissing out of hand that steps can't be attached (of course they aren't going to bolt right on, but they can be attached if ...). Having a welder and other basic shop tools, along with patience and a bit of tenacity, I found there are few projects that can't be worked out, and usually the end result is better than what you can buy. Usually the response is 'that's too complicated' or 'it's too much work' or 'I don't have the tools' which is understandable.

The upside of making such steps work is you can position them exactly where and the way you want. I can tell you the gauge of metal used to attach these particular steps is very substantial should welding be a viable option.

 

You already have a few offers for people to trade you their predator steps. I would take them up on their offer so you can have an OEM product that suits your needs and keep costs down.

The other alternatives are nice, but when people are so readily quick to get rid of their Preds, that sounds like your best choice. I have a friend in Minneapolis and hes dying to toss his predators' for rock sliders. Just hang out here for a bit or join a local FB group of 4Runner owners. Get the word out and you should have your preds quick.

I don't think the predator step are structural, aka sliders, and won't hold up to banging against rocks if that matters to you. If you really want a step and structural sliders, you probably have to go aftermarket with kickers (eg. Budbult, RCI, ...).

 

Predictors just like all the other factory stuff bolts to the body , I placed a order for real rock sliders for my 2022 4runner pro , I like White Knuckle rock sliders have a Kicker at the back end of the slider , I have had Budbuilt on my LC200’s .
You want a slider that bolts to the frame . This is what I have on my Gladiator bolt to the frame .
No lift just yet … working on it .

Been looking at doing something like this:
Buy these raw.

Then weld some nuts on the inside to attach either the long step or individual steps. Then if you where to smash something. You'd only smash ~100 bucks of steps and not your rocker/~$500 Predator steps.

 

kind of too bad nobody makes steps for the OEM sliders. I was looking at Bronco's before pivoting to the 4Runner (picked up Saturday, meanwhile I still wouldn't be able to order a Bronco the way I wanted). Anyway, there is a company that makes add-on steps for their sliders. Kind of best of both worlds, steps can be removed as necessary for off road trips and put back on when in town.

No steps on mine yet, not sure what direction I want to go. Not a huge fan of the Predator steps but also not sure I'm in on sliders just yet. Was gonna just pick up the trail running boards as a stopgap but have heard they get pretty slick in the winter (which is why I want them, to keep the gravel some towns use on the roads from being flung up on the doors).

 

This is the first rainy season my 4Runner has enjoyed. I have RSG sliders but I don’t notice that they do anything to protect the doors. Mine were well sprayed with mud.

 

This is a carriage stone. It’s purpose was to help passengers step up into a carriage. Not easy to take along.


This is a folding step stool. It’s purpose is to help the very young and very old get into a 4Runner. Easy to take along.

 

Too bad that someone already makes them for Broncos yet nobody makes them for 4Runners...bolt on when you need the step, remove for offroad...best of both worlds.

OP if you plan to off-road look for something more solid that can double as a step. Reputable brands to research include Westcott Designs, RSG and RCI

 

I went on a wild goose chase to find a step. I have a lift on my 22 (bought it that way) and my wife struggles to get in haha I mean I am not complaining when I have to give her a boost. Call me crazy but I am not a fan of the "attached" step look. I like the Cali Raised or C4 rock slider that have a "built-in" step. Not sure that's the right description.

 

Those are simply 0 degree rock sliders with either a kick out or top plate that can serve as a step.
