Thinking about trading in my Lunar 21 Pro

My buddy used to be an MDX guy. His last one (fully loaded previous gen) was a money pit. Dumped it and bought a fully loaded highlander.

If money isn't an issue, I'd slap a Magnuson or Pro-charger supercharger kit on the Pro, take the 5-10 seconds to adjust the seats myself, wear gloves on cold days, upgrade the speakers/add a sub, and call it a day. Much better looking and capable vehicle than the Acura. Just my thoughts.

We live once, that’s why I traded a 2019 Ford Ranger I modded pretty good. I see the value and happiness in the 4Runner. If the MDX is your thing go for it. Makes no difference what anyone says here. For me I’m turning 50 in June and as I see it the Runner will be the last of the good ole boys so to speak. People can say I paid a lot of money for an old outdated vehicle ….and I’d say EXACTLY…sign me up. I’m new to Toyota but for me it ticks the boxes and I know a good thing when I see it . Be happy and do what you feel.

    cheers from Georgetown Canada

Do what makes you happy, life’s too short to drive something you don’t like and market conditions are good for sellers right now (though buying cancels it out).

We just did the opposite and traded in my wife’s 2019 Honda Pilot Touring for a 2022 4Runner ORP. We loved the comfort, tech, and space in the Pilot but had no confidence in its long term reliability. It was a great road trip vehicle and everything we wanted, but had too many issues with the infotainment and speedometer. Decided to simplify and go with the proven fifth gen 4Runner. I miss memory seating and a power lift gate, but am happy to be back in a BOF SUV.

My 2 cents, I know absolutely nothing about the mdx but my electrical engineer brother in law who is an even bigger car guy/gear head than me, owns an mdx and said it was the biggest pos/worst car he's ever owned

I am turning 60 in May and I feel the exact same way you do about the 4R. I have worked hard for a long time like all of you have! I want the next 10 -12 years to be the best of my life! Healthy, happy and full of adventure! "You only live until you are dead" - I like that! Better to burn out, than fade away!

My wife had a 2013 Honda Pilot Touring and it has been a good vehicle for us and relatively problem free, but I never liked it. It is a perfect soccer mom vehicle. My son is a freshman at Montana State U in Bozeman and he has the Pilot with him. He hates it, but it has performed well in the snow with the Toyo Open Country AT3. He is begging to have our beater 2002 Suburban out there next year for his hunting, fishing and skiing ventures.

I’m glad your Pilot worked out for you, it seems like Honda quality declined in the last few years with the newer models (not to mention their styling). The Pilot was supposed to be a long term purchase, but multiple trips to the dealer without resolution became too frustrating. My wife and I both grew up driving Hondas, but we’re going with Toyota from now on.

It's tough to use a sample size of 1, though. Based on personal experience, 2 of my most problematic vehicles were a Civic and a Crown Vic. Obviously we know those vehicles are known for their reliability, so I really can't use my limited personal experience to say otherwise.

Acura is a great brand but their SUV and cars in general age poorly stylistically.

Your 4Runner is a body-on-frame instant classic. 20 years from now it'll still command a premium whereas that MDX will be just be a used crossover.

    food for thought.

I agree with others in that if it's what you really want and you can afford it, then why not? That being said, $75k on an Acura would be a little hard for me to swallow personally. I don't know what else I'd look at necessarily, but there are a lot of options that fall in/around that budget. We've owned three Acura's and liked all of them except for the last (TLX) which was just okay.

Like someone else said. If you can find a 4runner at msrp slap a super charger on it and you'll still have 15k in savings off that mdx. Your choice though.

If you can get out of a vehicle that you don’t like, and can not lose money doing so, what are you waiting for.

If you don't go off road or sleep in your 4R and don't like it then the Acura will be more than sufficient. The 4R is not for everyone.

I know what you mean, I had a couple Grand Cherokee Overland's and they were phenomenal, really very nice cars.

Wow, had no idea an Acura (aside from the NSX) could get into the 70's. Very nice cars as well. Get what you like, just research and "make sure", but we can't always predict the future. All that said, I hear you, being used to very nice cars, the 4Runner is (though I love mine and don't need it for luxury) does not stack up to some others. Do what makes you happy!

Just for fun, cross these off your list: Audi Q7 or SQ7, Audi SQ5, Porsche Cayenne, Lexus GX, Benz GLE

Not all the same price range or even available right now, but worth pondering even if just for 2 seconds.

Good luck, I hope you are very happy however you end up !

Agree get what you want ! Went backwards last January and traded in my 19 SR5 for a 16 Platinum Tundra. My reason was twofold, missed having truck and safety, as was rear ended in 4Runner and realized would rather have a bed separate from cab.

Knew the 2022 was getting rid of the reliable 5.7 so was looking for a 16 or 17 to again have latest model before safety sense nannies added.

Some want more tech, some less lol, but I do like having heated/memory seats and power folding mirrors !

My buddy did similar. Traded a 16 SR5 and bought a Tundra Get the school V8 for reasons you mention. Then his wife got a new Limited 4R so they had the 4.0 with as many options and comforts as possible. Luckily for him he has the best of both worlds

Test drove the MDX type S advance today. Walked away very impressed. A 355hp turbo is pretty sweet with all the bells and whistles.
    Still undecided though.

The type S is not a soccer mom grocery hauler normal MDX. It’s a 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque turbocharged sport tuned version of the MDX.

Sounds like it's probably a lot more fun on pavement than a 4runner.

I have one of those 2003 TLs (not Type S). My Dad bought this as a retirement car and went to sell it 2011 and trade it in with 18k miles. I bought it from him for a woman I was dating since she was going to need a newer reliable car. Two weeks later she broke up with me and I kept the car when she came into town.

It is a a fun car to drive and I only use in the summer. Still only sitting at 21k miles.

Yeah but, will it hop curbs? Can you do any sweet jumps in an MDX?

I can promise you it definitely can’t hop a curb. Those tires are very low profile. It’s also louder inside than my 4R. My friend who has one now hears all the road noise his Acura makes and all the creaks and pops. I wasn’t impressed with his vehicle at all.
