There used to be a thread write-up on T4R.org but some bullshit mod got into a personal tizzy and deleted all of the threads. I believe Old Red will supply you a PDF as part of the transaction.

^^ This. You get a PDF with some well written instructions, and a second pdf to help you find the correct display if you don't buy it from Toyota.

Yeah. I bought from a local Toyota dealership that typically offers a 34% discount if you buy online. But it's possible to find them cheaper from eBay or CL.

Yeah. The wiring harness changed in 2015, so you'd have to graft large portions of it into your truck if you want the same functionality with OEM parts. The custom harness that Old Red makes allows a simple tap into the existing CANBUS wiring, making it much easier to retrofit.

Haha “tizzy” is putting it mildly. Still not sure what the deal with that was. But I do find it funny. Really I should thank them for my thread deletion over there. Gave me time to rework some write ups and harness designs. Also stopped some questionable IP theft by someone banned from here and the other Toyota enthusiast associated sites.

I don’t think that mod on the site that shall not be named is even there anymore. That place has become a pop-up ad billboard forum. This forum is much cleaner in comparison. Better UI as well, and the mods here actually care.

Yes, it feels a bit spooky taking apart your dash but the walkthrough is very thorough. You can get inside, swap the display and connect the wiring, and button it up inside an hour.

This is what it looks like taken apart. I think there's 15 connectors, and 12 of them are for the radio.

@mynameistory is right. If this is the first time you have disassembled the dash, it feels a bit spooky like "what am I going to break". As long as you don't go full hulk mode it will be fine and you won't break anything. You can do it with three tools. 10mm socket, Phillips screwdriver, and your hands. Most of the dash is nylon clips, 10mm bolts and the occasional Phillips screw. The hardest part is balancing the radio unit with one hand will unplugging the connectors in the back with the other. The key is to take your time and go at a pace that you are comfortable with and keep organized.

I really need to make a generalized video of how to fully disassemble the dash down to the pad step by step. I don't think that has been done in the going on 13 years the 5th gen has been around?

@replica9000 Bingo. 12 for radio, 1 for HVAC panel, 1 for the clock, 1 for the instrument cluster.

Any suggestions on places to search online for per-owned Accessory Panel - Toyota (83290-35090)?
I setup an alert on e-bay for notification if one pops up.
The lowest price I can find new with shipping is $360+

I tried going the used route and got bamboozled by LKQ. Found and ordered it through them, but received a cancelation email a few days later saying "the part did not pass quality control". Called them up to see how bad the part was (thought it might just be scratched or something) just to find out they never actually had the part in stock... For reference, they had it listed for almost $200 after all the fees. Might be worth getting it new if you can find it for somewhere around $300.

At this point it might be easier to buy one direct from the dealership. I'm not saying it's impossible to find a used one anymore, but given the number of 2014 Trail editions that have been parted out is small, you might be waiting. If you want to find one used, LKQ is an option (or gamble), but I would suggest looking on Car-part.com and searching by model year. You will have to call wrecking yards. It comes down to how much leg work do you want to do, or is it easier albeit a bit more expensive to just order it up from Toyota (If I could find a way to bring the costs of the displays down I would. For what they are, there's no way Toyota's price is justified).

I guess it's good to hear (maybe bad to hear?) that I'm not the only one that has happened to. Sometimes I will order a part, and I will get that same "didn't pass quality control" line only to wonder how? Yet sometimes when I order a part I get a lot more with the part that I ordered, or completely the wrong part.o_O

Honestly, I have come to the realization that LKQ yards are fly-by-night operations. I order a fuse box, get a turn signal module. Not the best QC...

This was my first experience with LKQ but it was quite underwhelming. They seem to have a decent search system online but their parts are scattered in warehouses (not on the original vehicle in a yard somewhere). I think they strip the cars and have a horrible sorting system in their facilities.
Car-part.com is not easy to search but I think they work with individual yards instead of a warehouse system. I have never been able to find the exact part I was looking for on their website.

There aren't too many local junk yards to search around the NYC area so I went with the dealer route. I'm also starting to realize my time is more valuable after getting frustrated at LKQ...
Toyota dealers in the south are having a sale right now but I still don't think the price was justified (although better than the msrp around $450). I was able to find the blue display AMD for around $300.

Here are the pages from the owner's manual associated with compass calibration for the AMD. I tried to size them to match the OEM manual (I believe its 5.5"x8.5"). You should be able to print the PDF double sided and stick it in your owner's manual.

Sorry to hear that. It seems like everything parts wise is on national backorder. I'm currently waiting on a coolant hose that goes underneath the throttle body (small pinhole leak) that I was told would be 2-6wks out. Just in time inventory systems

Toyota is probably wondering wtf there's a spike on AMD orders.

The shortage of materials we normally get from Russia/Ukraine doesn't help either.

Toyota most likely doesn't/will never even notice.

If anything there is some guy drinking a cup of coffee looking at a computer screen, see's an uptick in the orders, raises one eyebrow, then goes back to whatever else he was doing/thinking about, sadly.:computercoffee:

What's a dude got to do to get Toyota to pay attention to what the 4Runner crowd wants? Do I need to "1st Gen-ify" a 5th Gen and slap a V8 in it?

Yeah the situation over there doesn't do anyone any good. How easy we as a society/species forget recent history.

I agree! To be honest the fact that this had been completed surprised me. I used to be very active on the other forums and remember the early stages of this but at that time it was not doable just yet and that thread disappeared and I lost track over time. Really glad Old Red had some remaining harnesses. ;) Should also look good with the T10 I have going in.

Thank you so much @Old Red for this harness. My display finally showed up yesterday. Definitely makes the cabin way more enjoyable! I did have two issues one being I could not figure out how to get the softex material detached but finally figured it out. The other was me dropping one of the display mounting screws down into the center stack...searching for over an house with an endoscopy camera than saying screw it and spending another 30 minutes digging in the garage for a comparable screw that I could use! LOL. I am definitely not a fan of popping these trim panels off as it feels something is breaking. That range is a bit generous after clearing out all my data!!

Yeah the softex material on the steering column is kind of tricky. One of the things I am addressing in the video I am in the process of making. The range will reset with driving. When the battery is disconnected the trip computer in the ECM resets to the max range initially. Dropping the screw and searching for it for an eternity is a rite of passage haha.

I too cringed the first time I pulled the panels, but they are more robust than they look. I'm hoping to have an update on the AMD side of things in June with the video and a little announcement. Lots of stuff in the works both on the harness side of things and in other areas.

@Old Red I still have your harness still in the package you've sent it in. It's post marked 04/2019. Did you happen to change anything from the original design?

I don't think I'll ever install it. I have too many other projects that are taking precedence.

I have the harness if anyone would like to purchase it from me. I'll sell it the same price Old Red sold it back in 2019 :)

Nope, the original AMD harness has been the same design since day one on the old forum. I'm just not making them anymore due to the discontinuation of one of the connectors by the OEM. I'm hoping to have the redesigned one (version 2.0) up and finished in the next couple of months.
