I am very happy to be a vendor here at 4Runners! We are still a very new company and are excited at offering you a great product. I have been around the forums, so some of you already know me, but for those who do not....

Who are we: At Talons Garage we are a husband and wife team. We started working together about 8 months ago. I take care of the manufacturing and my wife helps with the packing and shipping. We are enjoying growing this company, and love offering a product that helps so many others.

Interest: I have always been interested in all things with a motor! Land sea and air, I have had an interest in all. I started wrenching at the age of 16, after I got my first truck. The day after I bought my first truck, it broke down on me. Being a broke high school kid, I had no other option but to fix it myself. The necessity from that situation has launched itself into a lifelong hobby around automotive sports. I am currently also working on binging my wife into the hobby.

Our Product: We offer a catalytic converter protection plate for the 4th and 5th gen 4 runners. We have discussed making them for the 3rd gens too, and have a few lines on a test truck, it is just finding the time at this point. Our plate is made from ¼” Aluminum and so far, the thickest one on the market. We also offer true security bolts available as an upgrade. These bolts come with a proprietary bit that can only be sourced though me (or my supplier :p)
Not only do we offer ¼” aluminum to offer maximum protection, but we also designed our plate to also function as an off-road skid plate. We recently completed a front skid plate for the Tacoma and hope to do the same for the 4 runners as well. We also want to make a transfer case skid in the future too.

Shipping and lead time: We generally have the plates on the shelf ready to ship. We advertise a week turn around, but generally can get them out the door in 2-3 days.

Questions? Feel free to ask away!

    -Shaun and Crystal

I think it would be advantageous to your business to say were you are located. I could not find it on your site either.

I will provide an honest report of my Talon Catalytic Convertor install on a 2022 SR5 Premium 4x4.

I received the plate a couple of weeks ago and installed it two days ago.

I had one issue with the plate that required modifications. The slots cut out for the cross-member bolts did not line up with the existing bolt holes properly. When one side had the bolts in place and shifted all the way over as much as possible, the other side wasn't positioned properly to allow the bolts to be inserted. I was forced to dremel small half moons into the existing slots to get the bolts to go in.

My secondary concern is that vents are cut into the plate precisely beneath the catalytic convertors. Perhaps this was done for air flow but the existence of these events will make it quicker for a sawzall to cut through the plate. There's only about 8" of aluminum that has to be cut through to be able to remove the "folded up" part of the plate, allowing the sawzall to get to the front of the cat.

Man this is timely, we just had a thread on cat thefts.

Do you do local pickup? Also do you do installs as well or have a shop in H-Town that you have an arrangement with?

Texas Runners we tend to be all over the state and will travel for stuff. Anyway welcome to the forum!

I'll upload pictures but I'm only going to get the common refrain of:

No worries!! Nothing here pleases everybody anyway lol.

Your statement is true.... thats why its called a "Deterrent" and not prevention. Those idiots just want to do a quick cut and go, they are not trying to linger around and meet someone's 12-Gauge in the grill.

Here you go, I've marked in black where the thief is going to sawzall through the aluminum.

If the slots weren't there, they are, I believe, more likely to abandon altogether. I would be much more content if those slots weren't there.

Being that I live in California, thieves know there isn't much chance for them to be confronted with a 12 gauge and if you do .. you are the one the police are going to take the time to do something about.

If the police would show up, they might actually help them out. Clearly the thieves need the catalytic converter more than you do.

Did you try to contact me about this? I have only had a few issues with fitment since I started selling these. These issues are probably <1% of the total plates I have sold Feel free to PM me any pictures you have.

We are not able to do a local pickup option due to restrictions where our shop is. Installs are not something I offer either.

There is shop in Missouri city who installs my products. Pro Choice Auto Car (281) 969-8042.

I left the front loose, placed two loose bolts on the driver's side. Regardless of how I moved the plate around, there was no way the other two bolts were going into the existing slot as the bolt holes were always partially covered by the plate.

I am not implying that you in any way failed to rectify this situation as I didn't give you that opportunity. My feedback is that either 4Runner bolt holes are not consistent or there is an inconsistency in your cutting process. This feedback is given to encourage you to look for instances where a slight shift in the plates may be happening when the cuts are being made.

I expect that you are operating on low margins at this time, looking like you are establishing your business. It's not in me to ask you to send me a replacement plate that has slightly better hole alignment and doesn't have the cat air slots cut out. I made it work.

It’s not as easy as you think.
I’ve cut through 1/4 inch aluminum plate (not sure what spec) with a hand held jig saw and a sawzall to build a wind deflector for my rack and it is a pain in the ass. The soft aluminum welds into the teeth of a typical metal cutting blade if you run it too fast, rendering it useless. You have to change blades often, pick the teeth clean with a hardened point, or cut at a very slow blade speed. None of which a thief in a hurry will do. He would likely be quickly frustrated and leave.

Looks like you need to start working on skids that can retrofit into your cat cover. At 1/4 in aluminum I think you will get some heavy interest (no pun intended)

My neighbor has a 4 runner, and I need to get it over here and finish my front cat skid plate. I ultimately want to have a full skid plate package for the 4 runner, and it is getting very close to getting worked on!!

I wonder if it's worth the time and effort for R&D on a skid for TRD Sport & Limited. Due to its low hanging bumper this air duct is placed to route air for cooling.
(Some may remove it and install regular skids but me personally not comfortable using regular skid without this air duct.)

Toyota seems to think these air ducts were important enough to include on my 18 ORP plates. I would think it’s something to consider for designing after market skids.

These are both Valid points. I tried searching for some info on what these vents are specifically for before I started but didn't find much. My general assumption is possibly to just help keep air flow moving under the hood... but that is an assumption. I ended up putting the factory skid back on and tried to look to see where it is directed, and as best as I could tell they may be directed towards the front diff. The Eagle cutout is a little above where the factory vent is, but should give a good amount of air flow. It is a little smaller then the OEM vents though. I have been toying with the idea of adding a few more vent holes.

I finished up the test skids, but want to make a few more minor changes. I will keep an eye on the test truck and see if he has any over-heating issues.

Lookin’ good. Maybe a larger eagle for more air flow?
BTW, what kind of attachment hardware and system are you using for the oil filter access plate?

Is there any kind of support bracing on the top of the plates for added strength? Those look very nice indeed.

Do you mean bracing on the back side? No, but it will have a very beefy bracket behind it. I am making a few adjustments and hope to cut another one out this weekend.

It should fit, I do not see where the KDSS would interfere with the CAT plate. The front skid plate will be an issue though.

This is a pic. of a different venders skid plate, it has reinforced jacking point, and bracing. I was just wondering if yours looks similar or?
