got the itch to trade in sport sedan for 4runner. any short answer advice on the following:
    - purchase a base SR5 and mod vs.
    - purchase a trail edition vs
    - holding out for a TRD pro

honestly I am leaning towards a year end deal on a SR5 and just lifting, wheels, tires, rack etc from the start... But I am new and would like input. I live in Phoenix. I do not plan on huge rock climbing, etc like my friends do in Jeeps. but figure i can mod my way there if I have to. Also i would assume lifting a trail edition with KSDS suspension could be a challenge?

I think the SR5 Premium is the best value if you don't want the fancy off-road doodads. Buy an SR5 Premium and put a quality lift, wheels, tires and you're 75% there to what a TRD Pro is, and you have a sunroof. If you want the off-road doodads, get the Trail Premium and add a quality lift, wheels, and tires and you've got pretty much what a TRD Pro is, just without the badging, grill, shift knob, and floor mats, and again, you now have a sunroof.

I just got the Pro because it was the only trim available in Insurgent Tan.

This is early 2017 model, you can order brand new TRD pro. Later in the year there wont be any left to order :) Just like I have been searching for Brand new 2016 TRD Pro in Quicksand color all year and still cant find the unicorn.

Trail with KDSS...after some reading, it sounds like the the benefit of KDSS is more towards on-road manners. If I were to do it again, I would get this option.

FYI...I also came from owning a sports sedan...'08 BMW 335xi. I miss the twin turbo but the 4Runner is better going over potholes :)

Well I pulled the trigger. I got a SR5 and it is going to the shop to lifted, upgrade suspension (probably a fox set up - i have to pick it), I am going to switch the cloth for leather, put on TRD pro nose, wheels, rock rails, etc (i do prefer the look of TRD Pro). The list is getting longer and the bill is getting higher. but I can get it and i can mod it the way i want or in pieces. Might put a roof rack on it as well. but I will save that for later probalby.

Our Canadian Trail came with KDSS, sun roof, and all the goodies. I feel that the highway manners are important to us as it is our only vehicle and will take us to the off-road areas as well as to town for shopping. It is the 10th 4x4 I've owned since '64 and by far the best.

Cool. I'm sure you'll like it. Let us know your experience with the fox suspension.

i am meeting "after market" builder that works with the dealer mid week this week. I will pick out a budget and build and "design" the mods. but I am leaning towards something a little more higher end than the TRD bilsteen set up. I spoke to two associates, people I happend to meet. One had Bilsteen set up and other had a fox set up. These two new each other and the bilsteen guy essentially agreed the Fox set up was better on and off road. But i hvae not priced it out yet. When done, i will come back and post some before/after.

I went with the PRO since I did the whole aftermarket thing on my tacoma. I like my tacoma, specially off road, but its kinda nice not having to change anything on a car from factory.

Congratulations on the new rig. Personally I had an 05 tundra that was pre runnered out and I got tired of having to have it sitting on stands while I took the suspension to be rebuilt. I'm looking for something turnkey this time. :)
