Multi Terr Select in 4H

2019 TRD ORPrem No KDSS (unfortunately)

I discovered that the first MTS (only that one) position will work in 4H & considered that it might be a good advantage on ice & snow. Isn't MTS basically made up of varying degrees of of Atrac? However, not sure of speed limitations.
Would it have an advantage over Traction Control which is always on automatically? Anyone have experience or thoughts on the matter?

I used it to get up my ice covered driveway a few weeks ago. Worked great!

I learned most about ATRAC/MTS from this video. It finally all makes sense!

 

I believe 15mph is the limit for MTS in high. It won't disengage but it also won't let you select it if you don't already have it selected.

 

I've used it on deepish snow on a steep uphill in 4H. Was better than the normal traction control.

Unfortunately the open diffs front AND rear doesn't do this truck any favors. You need the electronic wizardry.

 

That was my experience as well in a winter wheeling trip recently.

 

this too was my recent experience on a steep grade with about 10" of snow with underlying ice. The improvement to traction with MTS in the lowest setting in 4H was very noticeable to me.

I have experienced that fully locked trumps all that computer traction control stuff.

 

Too bad our vehicles don’t come fully locked.

 

I can lock and unlock mine with the key fob. It’s awesome.

 

I actually had Atrac work like a locker to pull me out of a tight situation.
Been trying to not use my rear locker as often as I do.

I went up a short muddy incline then slid sideways into a mud hole. My 4Runner felt really close to rolling. Turned on what I thought was my rear locker and felt the brakes working as it pulled itself right out. Was really surprised how well it worked.

MTS - have yet to experience it helping anything. I have a couple areas where I could test it but...
My rear locker is the go to. If it looks sketchy, muddy, etc. I lock the rear and go right through / over the obstacle.

Note all the above is in regards to 4wd low.

 

Atrac is for when you are stopped and need to get going. It applies break to spinning wheel so pwr can xfer to wheel w/ traction.

MTS is for when you are moving & need to keep moving. It allows wheels to spin, which might be useful in mud, snow. See CHRIS IN MILWAUKEE's video.
