What is your daily driver commuting miles?
Freeway miles, City miles?
Will you truly need the full capability of a Rubicon (low range & lockers) on WA. forest service roads?
Just don't be like a friend of mine that got an '03 TJ Tomb Raider Rubicon, dash plaque #1***, that uses it for a DD.
Over 200,000 miles and less than 400 off-highway. Sad.


And now for a different take on this subject.

If ToMoCo. built a 4R with removable roof sections and complete roof removal options, it would leak like a JKU/JLU, guaranteed.

 

I had a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon LJ.
Problems started at 40K-88K mi: Water pump, radiator, starter, rear main seal, O2 sensors, gear synchros (1st gear would pop out of gear), main computer monitoring system, front drive shaft rebuilt.
Nothing catastrophic, but nickel and dime. Lots of time at lots of different dealerships and shops.

Here is my $0.02 on JKU's especially. 2007-2018 they produced the JK and JKU. The fist time a 4 door has entered the Wrangler class.

What is important to note is that Wranglers are utilitarian vehicles. No matter what you do, they are loud inside (remember, they are convertibles regardless of hard or soft top), the aftermarket is BONKERS with products, and more important, the rig is built with plastic crap. I don't see me buying another one 2007 or newer ever again. I had 2 JKU's. One I had a year and my son was hit by a red light runner and totaled. He walked away without a scratch. The second one was fantastic. I had done everything possible to prep that rig over 3 years to take a trip for 8 weeks to Patagonia. Problem was:

- OEM battery lasted 9 months
- Had the OEM head unit replaced 3 times in first 12 months
- I went through 3 fuel injectors. Each time, the diode failed, and the flow rate was fine. Problem with that? To replace coils, fuel injectors, pigtails, or sparkplugs, you have to remove the entire upper intake off (4 hours labor) each time in the 3.8L and 3.6L motors. Of course all of this was out of 3/36k mile warranty
- Oil cooler cracked. Cheaply made plastic that got brittle and broke. Very common. So common there was a national back order of more than 6k units and Jeeps sat for months sometimes waiting for the part to become available.
- At 23k miles, had both rear axle seals replaced under warranty
- Front wiper motor died in 19 months (I live in West Texas where it rains maybe a dozen times a year)
- Rear pinion went out at 44k miles (before a lift or bigger wheels/tires
- Stock steering stabilizer began leaking at 42k miles

How could I expect to take an 18,000 mile trip with an OEM track record like that. Sold it for a premium and bought a used 4Runner. So far, I'm digging the T4R.

 

To be fair the 4Rinterior looks rather sad as well. It seems to be screwed together well, but the materials themselves do not feel high quality.

That was 17 years ago, on a vehicle generation that dates to 1997. I would look into the reliability of the current model, which would be much more relevant.

As a counterpoint, I had a 1997 Grand Cherokee, with the 4.0, and had none of those issues in that time frame. It was actually quite reliable for th 12 years/165k miles I owned it.

 

I haven't done that much on my decade old Camry that is approaching 200k miles.

"P" stands for "Premium" which is essentially just heated pleather seats.
