That camera angle reminds me how cheapo Toyota was when giving TRD Pro 4 A/T tires and regular all season spare tire..

Also it funny how reviewers say how good the TRD exhaust sound and now they are happy how quiet the 2022 Tundra is..

So far I haven't found an easy solution to make that stupid loud exhaust quiet and make it more practical while keeping the exhaust tip towards the side. Looks like other 4R mufflers seem to have 2 bolts vs TRD have 3 bolts and not interchangeable.

No, its pretty simple. Loud means POWER at least in the 14-28yo male demographic. In practical terms, 3 or 4hp "feels" powerful because its louder, at least in this application. In reality, it means absolutely nothing. Its like the Harley masturbation throttle. Southpark nailed it:

 

Its not for me but to each their own. If I wanted a loud exhaust note I would have bough an American V8 muscle car with a real exhaust system; that's just me thought. I don't want my 4Runner to sounds like clips from Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift movie.

 

On the reverse, the amount of times some Karen in the neighborhood thinks I am speeding through the neighborhood because my M3 is loud is funny.

 

Sounds decent. A little tone from my 4Runner would be nice.

 

It kinda makes like a warbling farting noise on top of the otherwise thrashing howling sound of the V6 that you can’t ever cover-up.

 

It's not so much the noise that I'd mind (even though the 1GR sounds like a washing machine full of Cheeto puffs). It's the highway drone in the cabin that I do not care for.

EXACTLY. I don't want to hear this motor AT ALL. The only time it sounds good is when it's not running.

 

Don't forget how it sounds at idle or low rpm...maybe a washer machine full of cheetos with one ball bearing thrown in.

 

Is this like one of those threads where the anti pro peeps try to prove their sr5 is cooler because they made it look like a pro but just not sound like a pro?

No. This is one of those threads where common sense is thrown out the window in favor of "look at me".

If you like it, cool. Do it. It's your rig and no one should tell you something is wrong unless its unsafe or illegal.

Probably more important that "farting" noise you hear is an improper tune up, shitty fuel or another intake issue. That sounds like unburned fuel burning off outside the combustion chamber, ie; in the exhaust, downstream. I am pretty confident, but do not know for certain, that the map in the OEM ECU for say the SR5 and the Pro are different. Why? Different intake and exhaust. That's the purpose of the intake and exhaust; build more power and that can only happen if it is taking advantage of increased air coming into the motor and more effectively exhausting spent gasses. Adding a Pro exhaust to a non Pro motor is only half the job. It needs to be retuned to take advantage of that new system.

 

Conventional wisdom would tell me the same, but I'm curious about why the hp/torque numbers are listed as the same.

 

I'm scared of cutting and welding. I will keep my eye for any direct bolt on option. It would be great to find even quieter muffler than stock SR5 muffler. I initially thought OP did that test because the TRD Pro exhaust is annoying but looks like he posted because he love it.

 

Same engine, ECU and tuning so same power. Intake and exhausts haven't done much of anything for years now because they flow pretty well from the factory to make numbers in the horsepower wars. The intake is the same in the Pro Bro and the TRD exhaust is still 2.5 inches like all the others but with a different muffler to make noise.

 

the "farting" or pop you hear at the end is what happens when you free rev the engine in neutral and the engine isn't up to operating temp (it'll still happen when warm, just not as noticeable). It has nothing to do with a bad tune up, intake issues or shitty fuel. Also, a catback isn't going to affect HP and there's no "re-tuning" required to take advantage of the Pro system vs the non pro system. the only difference between the two is the muffler used and the direction the tail pipe comes out. A trd pro makes the same power as a non trd pro and they use the same ECU tune.

THIS, you'll get the same 2 to 5hp bump in power from an intake by simply switching to a high flow filter.

 

If the noise when he lifts off the throttle in the video below is similar to the "farting" noise you guys keep referring to from the video in the OP (I don't hear it personally), then I guess I like the sound of farts! I suppose it depends on the application though... I personally like my 4Runner to be quiet.

the "farting" referred earlier is the unburnt fuel detonating in the exhaust which was made popular thanks to the jag F-type and tuners.

 

Yeah, that was my understanding as well (about the unburnt fuel). I don't think it's a sign of improper tuning, since the most highly tuned racecars all do it. I've also never heard a fart that sounds remotely close to anything in either of the videos!

 

not only is it not improper tuning, it's actually a feature in the tune to make the noise and why most performance cars will have this noise made when you put it into a sport or race mode. My golf R has both a "crackle" tune and non "crackle" tune. Here's a great video to explain what is happening to make that noise.

The guy I sold my Audi to put a different tune on it so it would shoot flames, haha. I assume though, that even without the special tune to exaggerate the effect, it will still happen naturally to some degree but most mufflers suppress it so it isn't audible, right?

 

definitely a stock muffler will suppress most of those noises, (depending on the car) I know with my golf, you could barely hear any "pops" with the stock catback and a high flow downpipe, switched to a new catback and you can definitely hear a lot more and when I have a hard shift from 3 to 4 or 4 to 5 on a WOT pull, she gives out a huge bang and my friends tell me they see a lil fireball come out the tail pipes.

 

I ended up swapping out the TRD Pro Catback with a standard exhaust with a member here a couple weeks ago. I have run custom exhausts, cat backs etc. on most of my performance cars, but for me on the 4R the TRD Pro Cat Back was not ideal (I live in hill country), and the drone and gear hunting was not ideal. Normal street driving it sounded good. My butt dynometer did not feel any significant performance difference except no drone, quieter ride and virtually eliminated the gear hunting going up hills.
